But not to do with yesterday - a very interesting editorial piece in The Observer about the lack of a points deduction for Sunderland for fielding an ineligible player and comparing this to other cases, particularly ours. Includes a lengthy interview with a typically dignified and heartfelt Geoff Goodwin. Good piece, although it includes an embarrassing error about Oxford City.

As soon as I read that in the Grauniad it says that the bottom 3 in the Prem could sue if Sunderland aren't docked points for fielding an ineligible player that our name might crop up!

"Altrincham are the extreme example, docked 18 points in 2006 after signing a player, James Robinson, from Accrington Stanley without realising he had never received international clearance after a previous spell in Iceland. In the vast majority of cases, the punishment has been a three-point deduction."

Too late to do us any good I think but that case shows the quality of the original decision making process was utterly abject

Is that correct or more likely a 3 point deduction because that's the points the teams gain with jimmy Robinson it was unusual he played so long but as we all know accrington were at fault perhaps we were naive

Sunderland only gained one point in the league matches that the player in question played in but I think 3 points is the standard minimum deduction for this.

Unless i'm wrong the player concerned played four games from which Sunderland gained a one point. To be consistent with the James Robinson ruling Sunderland should/would/could be deducted one point as Altrincham had deducted all eighteen points gained for the games Robinson played in.

These were Conference rules and were interpreted correctly, That's why our appeal to the FA  failed as they could only rule on whether the Conf had followed its own procedures. The fact that the rules and procedures were not up to much was, unfortunately for us, irrelevant.
