I noticed we didnt play the "fanfare for the common man" on Tuesday - I like that intro for the players and hope it was just a blip - certainly should be played at the next home game !

Another legend gone this year. Remember seeing him at the Free Trade Hall in either 70 or 71 but can't recall if it was with The Nice or ELP. I have a poster somewhere which will tell me!

ELP at the Odeon, New Street, Birmingham during the miners' strike and power cuts. 10 minutes into the set the power went. We'd been warned it was probable. After about 3 minutes, Emerson emerged from the wings with a lit candelabra and announced that he would play jazz at the piano until they could continue.

For the best part of an hour he did just that and we were all enthralled. When the power came back they played the full set and came off stage well after midnight. The last buses had gone, nobody cared. A night that was a golden memory for every one of us.

RIP Keith, truly a legend.

The last gig of the British tour in April 1971 was the one I referred to above. Also saw them a couple of years later at the much lamented Hardrock in Stretford.

I think it must have been the December 70 show as I'm sure the poster has the prices in old money and we went decimal in February 71 if I remember correctly.

DID YOU KNOW!!!!!;-

That the original tune Fanfare for the Common Man, was based on a classical album tune by Aaron Copeland a US composer.

It may also interest you to know that ELP was a version of this song, though Aaron Copeland was the traditional writer.

I actually have his version on an album of Aaron Copeland's collection, which is based on rodeo type cowboy music - he was a very good composer and some of his songs were superb.

I take my hat off to ELP though for their version and it is right that this gets its own  with it's connection to AltyFC.

Found the poster and programme from the gig in the loft and it turns out it was The Nice at the Free Trade Hall on 3rd February. As it was advertising Van Der Graff Generator's first album in the programme I guess the year was 1970!
