Update on Setting Up Internet Match Commentaries for Altrincham F.C.
You may be aware that we are in the process of trying to set up an Internet Commentary Service for Altrincham matches & this is an update on the current situation.Following an appeal made in the programme & on this website, a number of people have, pleasingly, kindly offered to help to try to get this service up & running.
Within the last few days, Paul Burton, who has been an Altrincham fan since 1976, has managed to set up some software that will operate a radio station that has the capability of handling up to 1000 listeners. It is hoped that we can use this radio station as the platform to provide a match commentary service.
The first thing that we need to do is test that the service is generally accessible & we would like all Alty fans, with access to the internet, to help us out here, by trying to access the radio station & feeding back whether it works or not.
When you access the station, we have a nostalgic treat for you, as we are broadcasting a recording of Radio Manchester's Sportsline programme from April 1st 1978.The programme is hosted by Ian Frame & his studio guests are Noel White & Tony Sanders, who were Chairman & Manager respectively at that time. The programme takes place within a couple of hours of our home F.A. Trophy Semi-Final First Leg game against Runcorn, which ended 0-0.
Whether you have just started supporting Altrincham very recently.....or like Stan Riley, have been a fan since the 1940's, I am sure that you.......for a number of reasons....... will find this compelling listening!
The recording will play in a continuous loop until Sunday & should be accessible from around 9.00am-10.00pm each day.You may also find that between repeated plays of the broadcast, there are a few musical tracks from The Harbingers, who have a number of Alty fans amongst their group members!
We would like people, who try to access the station, to let us know how they got on, by posting a message on the thread on the Fans' Forum entitled "Radio Robins!!" Alternatively, please send me a personal message via the Forum or email me at brianflynn59@hotmail.com.
All you need now is the link.......which is below:-
http://s6.myradiostream.com/32396.htm
Click....Play....Enjoy!!!
This is the first stage of the testing process & I will be in touch later this week to advise you of the next stage......where we will be hoping you can help us out again!

Works for me.
Well done to everybody involved, great effort.

Everyone of them has a damn good moan!! And its FA Trophy semi final day!

Works fine for me
Thanks to you all
-
Thanks folks for the feedback........that's an encouraging start!
-
Station back on-line
-
Works well - Thanks a million - what a great idea !
-
Wonderful. No problems - coming through loud and clear.
-
If it on the Alty show part of the loop (listen to the tunes as well of course) its well worth stopping what you are doing and listening.
"Can you tell me why the programme was more expensive today Mr White..15p is a lot of money..is it normal to do a special edition?"
Its superb...
-
Sounds great to me. loud and clear.
-
Reception AOK in Saughall!
What a GREAT idea!
Well done and huge thanks for the efforts of all concerned!
-
Works for me fine, good quick stream, and if it helps with the test knowledge as well i'm a mac man using safari where i guess most other tests have been done with explorer.

As long as you're not a Macc man that's alright! ;D ;D

Works fine for me too.
I think this may be the first time I've ever heard Tony Sanders speak. Where's he from? Trying to place his accent.

Works for me. Excellent quality too.
Well done everyone. ;D

Sounds great, well done all.
Very interesting phone in too, from the days when there were 11 on the board and we paid transfer fees for players.
I think Tony Sanders was from Merseyside, he has a mild Merseyside accent.
-
Yep, works for me too. Good stuff.
Sanders has one of those mild, quite pleasant Scouse accents. Similar to Mancunian, either accent in its mild form sounds nice and friendly. In their stronger variations (see Jamie Carragher/Frank Gallagher) they are horrendous.
-
Really good reception
-
Brilliant stuff brian, clear reception here.
-
IF its a success I hope it can expand and have a sunday or monday night round up of the weekend including a phone in, it would be quality, and I bet you would get fans from every club in the conference tuning in!
-
I have to go upstairs to hear it clearly but its still good..
-
Working for me in the USA! Remember that game and that day well. Sure I listened to this program that night. Ah, the memories! Looks like a great idea for Radio Robins.
-
It works fine for me. Just a quick one though. There is a slight whirring in the background, presume this is just the recording equipment being used at the time?
-
oh my god just think how many people i could wind up on robins radio phone in :D
-

think its ats going on about referees mate ;)

:D
Tbh, its a good job this hasn't been introduced earlier, just imagine the amount of moaning at the beginning of the season. And I'd have spent a fortune banging on about the Curzon game.
Hughesys idea of a phone in and a weekend preview/round up would be amazing.
-
Excellent. Works good for me.
Would it be worth all tuning in at a set time to check what its like under some bandwith battering ?
-
We are a step nearer heaven with this!

That would be great, maybe we could hear a gunners11 or dino radio version :o

Bring gunners11 back. He was a legend.

Without wanting to sound like I am the sole authority on this matter I would contend your use of the word legend as it is far overused in circumstances such as this...
-
Bring gunners11 back. He was a legend.
As explained before mate, his brand of humour was funny.
However the vile early morning post of threats and incredible language could have got him arrested never mind banned from here.

Fantabulous mate! Not arf!

Really? Didn't know he was responsible for anything like that. Perhaps it got lost amidst the hysterical ramblings ;D

I respectfully disagree. After all, he was responsible for this post:

rhyl has gone down hill
harrogate bit poor really not good
leeds dump!!!!!!!!! that's all i can say on that one
derbyshire!!!!!!!who the hell invented that dump sh*thole
:D :D :D
-
I agree almost word for word with that gunners post!
-
Just a couple of points re the current broadcast...
- the Radio Manchester programme was recorded off Medium Wave radio and has been transferred from a dodgy 33 year old cassette tape - this will explain any strange background noises!
- the audio stream seems to work fine via Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari and Google Chrome browsers on PCs/laptops but has anyone managed to get it to work on an iPhone/Ipod Touch or an Android phone?
cheers,
Paul
-
Not working on my iphone when I tried before
-
Kept getting connection refused on android 2.2.
Works great on the laptop though.
-
Streamitall iPhone/iPod touch app worked for a few seconds - I'll try the other free apps that are Avaiable
-

Same for me on Android.
-
Have put an update on the front page of the forum (under next game) directing people to this topic. Hopefully will drum up some more interest and help.
-
Cheers for that PaulB, just as i suspected. :)
I'm running Google Chrome and it said refused, for about 5-10 seconds and then worked. (suspect its dodgy welsh internet more than anything!) Perhaps this is the problem with phones, just needs longer to connect?
-
I am listening on google chrome on my laptop and its fine, I have also checked on Firefox and IE.. The joys of making sure the forum works on a few formats after an update means I have these installed :)
-
Coming through loud and clear on the banks of the Mississippi. Epic!
I think all the moaning may in part have to do with how disappointed everyone was at the 0-0 first leg result with Runcorn. Visions of another heart-breaking FAT semi-final exit like the previous year. Of course it didn't turn out that way:) :D

That's exactly how I rationalised it in my own mind last night!
-
Works fine for me too.
I think this may be the first time I've ever heard Tony Sanders speak. Where's he from? Trying to place his accent.
I believe Tony is a Wirralian, possibly from Birkenhead, Heswall or Hoylake. He is a joiner by trade & had a kitchen installation business, which I think he still ran until relatively recently.
I thought that both he & Noel White came across very well.
-
Some things never change. I remember the game and thank god we did not lose. To many whingers!
-
works fine on Safari (Mac OS.X)
-
It has battered it way through the ether to reach my laptop in Shrewsbury... Loud and clear here Brian.
Cheers
-
can we do a fanzone when we play vics so we can just take the piss constantly live!!!
-
Works here too!
-
That was great, listened to the last 4/5 callers, just great to hear even if it was 78.

Works in the depths of the Cotswolds too. this could be great!

-
Yep no probs on Mac / Safari but no go on Android at the min... absolutely fantastic work all!
-
The Test broadcast is going off-line for the night now - it will be back tomorrow morning around 8am
Thanks to everyone who has tried the service out and for posting feedback - very much appreciated... and great to hear almost all of it is positive. :D
Cheers,
Paul
-
Test broadcast back on-line
-
Instant connection for me just. I am unbelievably happy with this. Great work all!
-
Test working fine in Fallowfield.
And good lord it was worth listening to as well. Absolutely brilliant.
Loving some of the callers, John Gill, a 16 year old Steve 'Dosser' Leigh showing his socailist principles, Flynny himself at the end, a suitably long Pete Hennerley call where's that pint pot?.... it's all there.
And the moaning is brilliant, semi finals of the trophy and complaining that we're not playing with flair!, how many was at that 'no glamour' Barrow game?. Also calls for Stan Allan and John Davison to be dropped!. Blimey, as if they wouldn't be the first names on our team sheet now, despite the percieved rise in standards. They made nearly 1300 appearances between them and still get stick! ::)
Some nice tunes by Harbingers as well. :)
-
" we haven't got a cat in hells chance of getting to Wembley..I won't be booking my tickets"
" 4,000 people have been conned today...15p for a programme"
" the performance on the pitch today was a con "
"when did you last think that Jonny Davison had a good game for Altrincham"
I can't stop listening to it!
-
I bloody love the name Radio Robins as well... keep getting a Partridge-esque jingle in my head whenever I say it, and keep getting it mixed up with Radio Rentals...
-
Apologies if anyone has been cut off from the broadcast this afternoon - I had a couple of issues with my internet connection and this meant the audio stream went off
Cheers,
Paul
-
Marvellous, nostalgic stuff.
Many thanks to all those who have contributed to this project.
I cannot believe the comments from that Philip Mason chap, who even seems to be defending Les Rigby's tenure as the manager at Moss Lane!

That is one of the most bizarre things I have ever heard.
For those who are not aware.....Les Rigby singlehandedly dismantled an excellent Alty team.......the one that got us to Everton. He was a very decent bloke, but an unmitigated disaster as a manager. The caller indicated that his results were better than had been achieved by Roy Rees (1971-75) & as an Altrincham fan he had the information available to prove his point.Ludicrous does not do it justice & it reminded me of a Monty Python radio sketch called 'Stake Your Claim'.
Listen to the first caller!

A caller who was 78, was it JTH?
-
Great idea Flynny and it works too!
I couldnt believe the moaning bunch of buggers, especially when we know what happened shortly after, ie getting to wembley, thrashing Leatherhead and then winning the APL two years running 79/80 and 80/81 plus wembley again in 1982.
I wonder what the tone would be now if Graham and Kenny did a radio phone in at present ;D
-
Absolutly superb stuff and great to listen to that nostalgic clip.
What people were saying especially that one going on about Les Rigby was just unfathomable and the thought that kept jumping into my head while listenign was imagining what Geoff Goodwin's reaction to these moaners would have been!!!! I'd love Geoff to listen to this and see his reaction....
We were bloody lucky actually that at the end of the interview Noel didn't just turn round and say "I've had enough of this"
-
Imagine what it would have been like in September... :/
-
Had an oppertunity to try it out this morning and it worked fine for me.
-
We were bloody lucky actually that at the end of the interview Noel didn't just turn round and say "I've had enough of this"
Thats exactly what I thought.
Imagine when he got in the car driving home after that, I don't think there was one positive!!
-
On reflection, that 1977/78 season was a bit of a strange one.
In truth, we never really threatened to make a realistic challenge for the NPL title.
Disappointingly knocked out of the FA Cup by Runcorn at the Fourth Qualifying Round stage (yes, I know that this has now become par for the course for us.....but expectations were higher back then!).
The signing of Kingy in late November rallied us but we did still contrive to lose at Cammell Laird in the Cheshire Senior Cup.
In the five matches prior to that radio phone-in, we had only managed one victory and had suffered three defeats, including a 5-1 drubbing at Gateshead.
Thankfully, we went on an FA Trophy run culminating in that never-to-be-forgotten day at Wembley on 29th April 1978.

His answers sounded familiar, now in recent Alty history I haven't been too impressed with Noel White to be honest but thinkinng back to how he was in those dark meeting of the early part of the 2000s I now understand why. He's spent a whole lifetime battling off hecklers!
-
The first memory i have of Noel White was him giving out freebies outside the ground.
I've been hooked ever since.
He has a lot to answer for...
-
connection refused in bangalore and the jungle . indian goverment must think it is either a threat to culture otr a terrorist plot.

Is it possible to get Radio Robins sponsored or have ads - even if just read out on air?
-
Perhaps if we had 1 sponsor per game ? if all the games were covered (46) + atleast 1 Fa Cup,trophey, and cheshire senior cup game (49)
So if it was say £10-30 - id like to think we'd win 1 of the cup games, therefore would raise £500-£100
I think if games were banded - like the travel - so home games say £10 (£230), 5 local at £15 ( £75), middle distance 13 games at 200 (260 ), southcoast/London 5 at £30 (£150)= £715
For the cost
-thread named after them ie "Forest Green Rovers match thread S C TYRES" -
-a link to site/ list of their prices at the top of the thread
-name check at start HT and FT plus twice per half
-a sticky topic at the top of the forum, or message on the website -
think would offer the shop/buisness/person value for money
Thoughts?
-
Some good ideas re sponsorship there.
The website we are using is a free service and as such we have very little control over how it looks. However, there is an option to take the audio stream and embed it into another web page,( ie one with Altrincham FC branding and sponsors ads) but we have to also carry the advertising the free provider stipulates - thats how they keep it free.
The service is very much in in its infancy and there are still technogical issues to be ironed out - we still of course have yet to cover an away game. With this in mind it probably best to review the service at the end of the season in preparation for next - if the demand is there, paying for the broadcast service may have to be considered - this would remove the advertising restrictions but more importantly give a guarantee of service availability, something we dont have with the current free service. We wouldn't want to take sponsors' money and let them down because the service didn't work.
All in all, its been a very good start for Radio Robins - and 2 wins makes it all the better!

Conclusion from my connection nightmare is that AOL is interfering with it and i needed to connect directly via a browser (Chrome worked) without going anywhere near my AOL service first. Now working and I'm enjoying the re-run waiting for the Johnson roar!

Glad to hear that Paul's advice about using a different browser has worked!
You might be a bit disappointed with the roar after the Johnson goal.....I was behaving myself by then!
You will enjoy Simon's "It's a gooooooooooal" though!!
-
Thanks for the ideas regarding Sponsorship folks.
We discussed this at yesterday's TASC Meeting & I am going to put a proposal together this week.
-
Does anyone actually go to thegame anymore ;D
-
Just out of interest, why did you decide upon shoutcast? Did you try any of the other free options (for example the open source icecast)?

First one I tried to be honest - and it worked :D

I was surprised that they don't do a paid and free option.
The free option where they put their ads on or a monthly subscription where you can have it ad free (and put your own on)

Discussed at the TASC meeting yesterday. I think Flynny is looking into it.
It's all just a bit of trial and error at the moment and seeing how and where it could go.

Fair enough. I just like the open source alternative whereever possible, free software that you can add to or develop yourself as you get the code and there is an active online community continually working on it and available to help (Bill Gates is Satan....sorry that just slipped out).
The ads issue is to do with the server hosting rather than the shoutcast software. You are using freestreamhosting.org to host the media stream. Options are to host it yourself (which requires a certain spec and a very reliable ISP backbone) or pay for a media hosting option.
Oh, and thanks for the reply.
-
We've gone with a very simple option(ie. freestreamhosting.org) here because it needs to be something that Brian and his team can use with minimal technical knowledge. I'm sure there are other broadcasting options available which will ultimately suit Radio Robins but what we have works and the service has gone live successfully much quicker than any of us ever thought. What it has shown is there is a decent demand for the commentaries, something I'm sure will be further confirmed with the first away game. I've not done that much really getting this going - just done the initial setup and pressed a few buttons when required - the real hard work (IMHO) is done by the commentary team who have made an excellent start.
Cheers,
Paul

Yeah, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. There's certainly a demand and as you say the Darlington game will give more of an indication of peak demand. I very much appreciate all of your efforts and those of the magnificent commentary team.....for an exile like me it is quite literally a lifeline.
Hope you didn't take any of my above waffle as critical, because it certainly wasn't intended that way (just geekily interested in the nuts and bolts)
-
Is this re-running? As I havent heard it yet due to being at work but would love to hear it. :)

'minimal technical knowledge' is the term that I would certainly apply to the commentary team, although one could add that the learning curve has a very much on a steep upward incline !
The first away game will be a real tester from a technical viewpoint particularly if there is no wireless network ?
Still plenty of techinical issues to be overcome but don't understate your own excellent input to date.
