Righteous puddings
« on: September 27, 2011, 09:55:04 AM »

While I always enjoy John Laidlar's sarcastic grammatical interpolations into the various local newspaper reports of our matches, I think he's got this one wrong:

"In truth they got their just deserts [sic] given their limited attacking threat.."

Because 'just deserts' is right, isn't it? The word in this context derives from 'deserve'. So no need for the [sic].

I thought that last night, but it was very late and I presumed I wasn't reading properly.

You are indeed correct Leon.

He probably just didn't know the origin of the phrase. I didn't either I thought it was something to do with puddings.

JL out.

The bit I found confusing was the Coventry paper referring to them as 'Boro' ?

Do they not know they have changed their name, or is this a sister paper to The Messenger ?

I notice that JL has now cleared up his [sic].

For me though he's still on borrowed time.

I have a feeling that they have retained 'Boro' as a nickname.

This might not be as odd as it sounds as Stafford Rangers' nickname is 'Boro' for some reason.
