Luton once conceded 6 goals in an FA Cup match but still won the tie.
What was the score and who did they play ?

Was this the game where Denis Law scored six goals for Man City but the game was abandoned due to waterlogged pitch. Luton won replay 3 - 1.

Didn't the lack of their vote at the AGM contribute to us not getting in the league in 1980?

Or have I missed this being said elsewhere?

You are correct, I'm sure Cult/Gazeele?Flynnny?noel white will explain later.

Also, it appears that one of our current squad once played for Luton and an Alty legend played for Luton as well (or at least was the physio there).

Off the top of my head, I think it went something like this;

The voting system was 4 votes for each club in the top two divisions and 4 votes for the 3rd and 4th divisions as a whole.
One team forgot to vote, one team had been promoted from the 3rd to the 2nd division and didn't realise they had 4 votes for themselves.
I can't recall which one was Luton, but I think the latter.
We lost the vote for election by 2 votes. If one of the 2 had voted for us, it would have meant a two way second ballot with Rochdale.
If both had voted, and voted for us (and they said the would have) we'd have been elected to the league.

What might have been eh?  :'(

One interesting point which forever stays with me is that Edwards, the Chairman of Man Ure voted for Rochdale and not us. I've never forgiven him (or them) for that.

Saw Alty as a threat and didn't want us in the league on his doorstep. Seriously.

Ddin't the Luton bloke get pissed and fall asleep/miss the meeting?

Was it Grimsby who went home early and didn't vote/or changed his mind when he got there.

Both candidates for relegation to the conference this year!   ;D

We could sing "We're going to play you again" in a twist on an old Kidderminster favourite!

1. Correct. Denis Law scored 6 for Man City and the game was then abandomed at score 6-2. Luton won the replayed match 3-1. Season 1960/61.

2. My memory of the voting fiasco in 1980 matches that of the Gazelle.
The Luton chairman missed the vote due to being stuck in the London traffic. The Grimsby Chairman was at the meeting but somehow didnt collect a ballot paper. Both had previously advised that they would vote for Alty. I dont remember United ever admitting that they voted for Rochdale. It certainly was not Louis Edwards as previously memtioned on this forum - he died of a heart attack in February 1980 at a time when he was being investigated for corruption in both Football and his meat business.

It is not beyond the bounds of possibility that Luton and Grimsby will come down this year - and I for one will appreciate the irony of that, should it happen.
