Title: Once upon a time I used to be fearful...
Post by: blackpoolalty on May 10, 2008, 08:01:15 PM
Of these bloody players, always seemed to do it against us...

David Leworthy of Dover Athletic
Carl Alford of Kettering Town
? Butler of Northwich Vics

add to that the entire Gateshead, Hayes, Welling, Rushden team.. !

Reminising and they come to mind

Anyone else add to that phrase 'bollocks' when you see who's on the oposistion team sheet ?

Trevor Finnegan of Runcorn in the same decade.

Trelford Mills.....I know he was the man in black, but he seemed like opposition to me.

Colin Cowperthwaite

(and have to agree on all the Vics shouts and possibly even add Mark Ward to that)

Paul Dobson at Gateshead. Always seemed to be the league's top scorer by a mile despite Gateshead never being more than a mid-table outfit.

Seem to recall someone similar at Stafford, scored like 25 a season yet they were always down the bottom end

That was probably Leroy May who had a brief spell at Alty prior to signing for Stafford.

I have that game at home on video somewhere!

John Coleman and (possibly) John Norman were the two Morecambe players you're thinking of?

....kept thinkin I could never live with Alty on the slide,
But those crazy Tuesday nights,
With those journies, oh so long,
I grew strong,
I learned how to carry on,
And now we're back,
From the abyss,
It's reprieve time again,
So now we're on the p*ss.....

We will survive...........ooops sorry wrong thread

That Gloria couldn't half put em away.....

Yeh Norman sounds familiar, if you've got the vid you'd notice Sonar Zumrutel zipping up and down that wing  ;)

As an aside to Cult's shout for Mark Ceeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrreeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeelllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllooooooooooooooooooooo, I think and we may need some clarification here but we were rumoured to be signing Paul Dobson at one point in the early to mid 90s

Flynny?

I think it's mentioned in the "Kingdom Come" book. I'm sure it was Paul Rowlands who attempted to sign him after we played them up there.

Excerpt from page 7 of Kingdom Come by Mark Harris:

"After a 2-1 defeat at Gateshead (2nd February 1994)....Rowlands made a daring bid for the Geordies' leading scorer Paul Dobson, rumoured to be unhappy at the International Stadium. Nothing ever came of the move but such a proven goalscorer might yet have proved Robins' - and the manager's - salvation."

Actually, never mind players names, can I just say Gateshead?

Our record up there, and indeed against them full stop was absolutely atrocious. I think we beat them in the promotion season (1991) but didn't win again until, ironically, we sealed the Unibond league title there in 1999.

Most of the defeats were up there in midweek by either 1-3 or 0-2 iirc. Awful.

Has anyone got any definitive records of this?

I remember having one hell of a hangover at work on the Friday.

Wasn't that the night that Flynny spent fast asleep in one of the Moss Lane dressing rooms?!

The day at Gateshead where Bomber headed home and wheeled away to celebrate with us was truly the day that promotion was clinched. Never has a there been a more fitting moment for one of the Moss Lane gretas, and I do mean that.

I remember their keeper Adrian Swann was sent off really early in the game but we really struggled to break them down. The relief when Bomber scored that goal was immense!

It must have been due to a postponement  as we had quite a good run in the Trophy that year as well. We had played at Frickley on the Tuesday night so it couldn't be played on any other day I suppose.

The match was originally postponed on the first Saturday in March. We had a lot of problems with the pitch that season after it was virtually destroyed by:-

a) A game against Chorley that I think we won 4-0.
b) A Mickey Mouse Altrincham Senior Cup game or something that the Reserves/Youth Team played in which the referee decided to play despite the ridiculously wet conditions

Neither of these games should have been played.

Whats a daring bid ?

was he parachuting or riding a unicycle on a tight rope blindfolded or something?
