I had a feeling those of an "older vintage" would be able to improve on my XI!

Cheeky young whippersnapper!

I'd find space for Eddie Bishop.
Am I forgetting something about Danny Murphy? Wasn't he a slight and rather injury-prone winger?

That's a good shout as regards Eddie Bishop.
Graham Barrow is surely another midfielder worthy of inclusion.
As for Danny Murphy, whilst he was, indeed, somewhat fragile as a player, I believe that he was considerably 'handy' off the pitch.
Other contributors may be able to corroborate this.....
-
Tony McLoughlin
Micky Gannon
Derek Halliwell
With a special mention for Sir Jackie ... spotless disciplinary record, but had to be as tough as any of em to take the stick he took and still smash all those goals in the back of the net!

That was certainly my understanding....

Cant have a list like this without the great left back Tommy Banks not in it

Very true. I remember once when he was up against a young right winger, Tommy said in his broad Bolton accent "You try and go past me lad and you'll end up in't stand"

Two small guys with big hearts. You'd not have tried it on with either of them !
Joe Flaherty anyone ?

Another quote i once heard was "You try and get past me and Tho'll get gravel rash"
I was Alty mascot when he played and I once tried his cap on (When he wasnt there I hasten to had) and it was massive. He must have had a head the size of chuffing Bull ;) :D

A couple more names from the 60's Big John Higgins and Frankie Peters - the latter who I believe now resides in the Shrewsbury area.
-
Joe Flaherty anyone?
-
Carmody?
Barry Butler? (Big Bad Bazza!)
-
Andy Green ? a certain german sh*t himself.
-
Mcloughlin, one hard centre forward, John Rodgers took no stick.
-
derek halliwell was a tough little cookie as well and he could play a bit billy bremner like
-
Andy Green ? a certain german sh*t himself.
which one?
I thought Greeny was terrific value for money.
-
do i recall Andy Kilner was a bit tasty with his fists there was rumours of some incident which involved him ?
-
Ian Horrigan.
A handy amatuer boxer as far as I had heard, certainly the scousers at the time thought so. Looked a stocky fella if crap footballer.
Apparently the Bishop Auckland players decided to get back at George Shepherd and it was Horrigan who put 4 or 5 of them out of action. (embellishment possible, we'll never know).
-
Another nomination for Eddie Bishop
-
Ronnie Ellis?
-
Ronnie Ellis?
No slouch, I'll admit, but would only make the bench. Mind you, he'd get a few outings when others were suspended :D
