Word is troll.

And you'd hope it'd be a decent one, though I get the feeling it may be two teams of triallists.

Can't imagine it being a particularly good game, not many people are that bothered about a friendly, if it was an FA Cup tie then it would be a different story.

We will bring a first team plus trialists, with 3 games in 7 days it will an Eriksson style substitute fest.

I will be on holiday for it but as I said when it was organised, we should not be playing Macclesfield in a friendly.  Somethings should be kept sacred.

Agree, this should never be a friendly game, it is like playing Vics in a friendly or FGR or Mansfield - it just should not happen.
Title: The reason behind the game
Post by: GrahameRowley on July 23, 2010, 04:53:36 PM
The whole point of arranging a game against Macclesfield this season was to commemorate the 100 yrs at Moss Lane with Macclesfield being our first opponents here in 1910. There will also be a 100 years at Moss Lane Dinner arranged for around the time of our move to Moss Lane - Sept 1910.

It was on my suggestion that this game was arranged and I'm sure that we will be playing our strongest team available on the night. Everyone's support was this game would be much appreciated - a small commemorative programme will also be produced for the occassion

Just my personal opinion.  Of course everyone should support it, it will be a good game and a good test for us.

I just don't like the thought of us playing Macc in front of 350 in a non competitve game.

Surely if its an occasion like that it would have been an idea to let people know?

I tend to agree with the other posts, we should not play each other in a friendly, the day we meet in a competative fixture will be special, having friendlies surely dampens the inevitable expectation of the fixture to come.

Not everyone views the website and I'm certain few Macc fans drop by regularly.

If its a centenary fixture then true, the publicity should be more widespread.

Could we just keep one thread about its original topic instead of it ending with a sh*t pun?  This is a discussion about the Alty v Macc Town game

Have to say Micheal Twiss is a very canny signing, experienced and proven at Conference level.

It seems Alty are improving year by year, you setting yourselves up to join us in the big league?!

Not from us. We've got our squad pretty much sorted now. We've got a couple of trial players here still, one being Matt Hamshaw who I really hope we sign.

Gary Simpson has said a coupe of times that this will be one of our toughest tests of pre season so I can't see it being a weaker side!

If alty play macc in a competative game we will all love it and even macc fans admit that. Until then I agree it's sacred. Part of me wants 2 teams of trialists. I'd hate to think of both teams actually trying when it's not a proper derby game!

Still, I think it's something worth celebrating and don't think it would be right to play anyone else. One of those catch 22's that I hope next season won't happen, because we'll be in the same league!

Friendly or not. Me and the other half will be there on Tues... There is something nice about walking into the ground for the first time prior to the season starting over again..

What better way to celebrate 100 years at Moss Lane than beating The Old Enemy

Cmon ALTY

I think it's good to play Macc. Chances are we're not going to draw them in a cup and by playing them we are keeping alive the old rivalry. Younger fans have never seen Alty vs Macc so can't join in the rivalry. It's a part of Alty tradition that could die out.

...also, there's no reason why it won't be played in a competitive manner. The game is to mark 100 years of football at Moss Lane, and I'm sure the Alty lads will play to win.

Not to competative though we have already got a few injuries to key players in our squad, we don't want anymore.

You having a laugh? Playing them in a friendly will not keep an old rivalry alive!! Only serve to lessen it

Younger fans will have to wait

I think as Grahame Rowley says, the friendly has been arranged for the 100 year anniversary at Moss Lane and us playingthem in the first game. I'm sure that otherwise it's not the friendly we would arrange, and indeed haven't in the past. Although all the arguments against are very valid too.

George is also correct about us needing the money and Hughesy has stated elsewhere it's probably just the test we need right now, as such I'll be in attendance.

Surely the fact that the game is to celebrate a centenary of football at Moss Lane is justification enough to attend. The opposition should make it a bit more spicy than even a Prem club would, so what is the issue? A chance to see what may be the basis of the season's squad against an old rival in a commemorative game.

Me and my two lads will be there tonight, I would not miss this one for the world.

I hope Macc bring a few down tonight also, I am sure we will all enjoy ourselves and believe me, both teams will take is seriously.

I am sure it will be a great night.

Forget your issues and come down anyway, lets support our team, friendly or otherwise.

Truly bizarre stuff from alty62. Surely macc62 would have been more appropriate? it leads me to believe one of four things:

1. you were born in 62, making you in your late 40's. Grow up?

2. you are 62. Dimensia?

3. Your IQ is 62? Above average for macc

4. Its your sheep count? Below average for macc

Either way, enjoy the game. I hope alty show a bit more promise than curzon suggests and its played in the manner it deserves.
