Title: Barry Howard
Post by: brisbane_alty on August 23, 2023, 12:10:37 AM
I saw a post on Facebook that Barry Howard has died. I'm not sure of its authenticity and can only hope that it has been reported in error.

He was my favourite player when I stated watching Alty in 1979. I still think he's the best winger we've had at the club.

RIP Barry, condolence's to family and friends. One of my all time favourite players and would make my dream team as a right winger.

As far as I'm aware this hasn't been confirmed by any official sources yet

This would be terrible news if true. Barrys' goal at Rotherham is one of my favourite Alty moments.

Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way.
Oh what fun it is to see the Robins win away.
Driving through the snow to get to Rotherham
Everybody telling us were going to get undone (polite version)
Malcolm Bailey scored, Barry Howard got number two,
And those super robins had stuck it up their flues!!!! 😉

One of the best songs of all time! 😉

One of mine as well Chester.  So sad there is no video record of it.  As I remember he beat the defender on the edge of the box not once, but twice for good measure before curling that beauty into the top corner.   Brilliant!

The one he scored against City in a friendly stands out. Nic Seller described as "throwing an apple through a letterbox from 35 yards".

I can't actually picture the goal at Rotherham, I am embarrassed to say, but do remember that  match as one of our best victories. It's another one of the great players from our most successful period gone. RIP.

I was on night shift over that weekend and went without sleep (obviously) the night before the game and the night after.
To be there to see it was SO worth it!

Sad week losing two club legends .  Barry was one of my favourite all timers and of course in the mix for our best ever winger. Can remember vividly those magic moments mentioned above , all great goals.  Was stood behind the barrier at the open end where Barry nutmegged Willie Donachie near the touchline and hammered it past Joe Corrigan at the near post , the night we leathered Malcolm Allisons full strength City team , the great Kazimiertz Deyna included . What a player and what a team. R.I.P. Barry .i

Extremely sad news, on what has been a grim few days for the club.

I first took note of him as a winger to fear in that powerful Runcorn team of the 1970s, alongside the likes of Mal Bailey, Alan King, Barry Whitbread, Phil Wilson and Trevor Finnigan.

What delight then duly unfolded when Alty finally contrived to sign him from Stockport County in the summer of 1978.

Such a valuable and entertaining member of that all-conquering Alty team. He was so good that we even forgave him for adopting that Keeganesque perm!

I particularly recall him mercilessly tormenting Stewart Houston and scoring two goals in our 3-0 FA Cup First Round Replay annihilation of Sheffield United at Moss Lane in November 1981. One of the great Alty nights.

Simply a class act.

Condolences to his family and friends.

Quite surprised to read Graham Rowleys tribute to BH in the NLP today.
'He wasn't at the club for that long but became a firm favourite in such a short space of time'
🤯
I would have thought six years service, over 200 appearances and almost 50 goals deserved a little better than that!
(unless he's been misquoted?)

I remember him in the late 1970s, a great threat from the wings, and i have a great visual memory of a Barry Howard goal sailing in from the Moss Lane right, outside of the box, curling into the left hand corner where i was standing. In my 1970s black teenager trenchcoat. Rip Barry you were very talented and gave many people a lift with your skills. You are fondly remembered as a very classy and threatening Alty player.
