Radio 5 live Twoddle

I was listening to Radio 5 at about 1230 today and they had a little session on non-league clubs on how the gap is closing between us and division 2 and why.

On came this woman called Carol who presents the weekly non-league radio show (what!where?) and everyone's favourite Colin Lee representing Torquay.

They both said the success of the NL clubs is down to the financial acumen of the people runing them combined with the ability to have players on part-time contracts.

Aren't most BSP teams full time? And most are rather pushing it when it comes to finances?

Now two interesting facts came out
of it - they were quoted as saying that some part-time players earn £7-800 per week and that Torquay went part time 18 months ago.

They also really went to town on the impact Setanta has made in recruiting players and how playing in front of cameras sometimes twice a week has helped them.

Clearly the point of view of the representatives was only one small part and the uninitiated listener would think all is rosy in the BSP/N/S and there's no problems.

The term "part-time" is to football what "R 'n' B" is to music: both terms have been been taken and their meaning completely altered.

Most BS Prem clubs which call themselves "part time" train 3 mornings a week and get time off between matches. Their players may or may not have other jobs but their primary source of income is from playing football.

"Part time" at clubs like Altrincham and Barrow means having players who mostly work full time during the week and train two evenings a week. Their primary source of income is their day job.

I suppose the correct term for Torquay and others like them (eg. Burton Albion) would therefore be "part time pros".

But is the gap between us and Division 2 really closing that much? Look at Aldershot and Exeter this year and how well they are doing.

Was that Caroline from BBC Radio London's Non-league Show? That's the woman who along with some idiot from the press claimed that we needed an expenditure cap in the Conference to help avoid clubs going under...

...How about they only spend what they f**king have and if they don't then they deserve to go down??
