Title: Ryan Shotton released by Bournemouth
Post by: Alty365 on July 29, 2008, 09:49:45 AM
Big surprise to me that, I thought he would do well for them. If money were no object I'd love to see him join Alty - we would have strength in depth in every department. Picture it:

Young picks up a 5th yellow card of the season just before our crucial FA Cup tie at Macc in November. Not to worry though because we still have McGregor/Shotton who can fill in for him.

Crazy talk I know but the very thought of it excites me.

Surely worth GH picking up the phone isn't it? Even though many gaps have been filled, his versatility as much as his quality have got to be worth an enquiry.

I am surprised though as Bournemouth are expected to struggle big time in League Two this year.

I think the budget will be well and truly spent now!

I think our cover is OK...

RB - Lane, Batts
CB - Lane, Young, McGregor
LB - Doughty, Peyton

If we got Shotts all three of our centre halves would be first team material, and that could cause an issue for the one that doesnt get in.

Can't believe that! Shotton is a fantasic player, at least Championship level in my opinion.

Love to see him back at Moss lane, but I can't see it ever happening.

If we had been able to get him on a season-long loan two weeks ago, it would have been fantastic but we should keep with what we've got now.
Besides he'll get fixed up with another L2 side before long, I'm sure.

I cant believe people think we should'nt try and get him, he could be worth an extra 5 points a season playing consistantly for us, pace at the back is needed

Agreed. He would be our best Defender. Of course, it could be that Stoke have already told GH that they want him to play league football. However, if that is looking unlikely ......

Its a no-brainer as far as im concerned. If Ryan is a genuine possibility then we should snap him up, move McGregor to right back (where he has played a number of games in the past) and release either Laney or Battersby.

I think people are gettign a bit giddy about how much we have to spend...that what I mean.

If people can suggest not starting the leagues third top scorer I sure can suggest not being able to afford Ryan Shotton.

Agreed. For me, he should be one of the first names on the teamsheet.

Surely we can't do Shotton justice, he should be playing in the league.

Besides, i'd rather take what we've got and come out with a 500 quid profit in a years time.

Little should be released. FACT!

i know we havent got an endless thread of cash ecky, i just believe that gh would take him on loan if available again, we might have some room for a loan player,

last season we had plenty of them, its just shotton would really be the icing on the cake ;D

Sorry, meant to be reply that last one.

Meant to say ...

If Lane is injured then we have no cover at RB or CB & that would leave us short.

So getting Shotton back must be an option if finances can hold up.

we have batts to cover at right back and i doubt we are going into the season with a squad of 19 players, be patient has GH let us down so far this pre season?

Would love to see him back at Moss Lane. The comment about us having three central defenders and one getting upset is a tremendous though, playing for places is the best position to be in

But as mentioned above he is above our level I believe, but I am as sure as ecky we have spent our budget and we have a squad of 19 players. Even on loan I am sure we would have pay wages.

Wasn't there talk a few weeks ago about Street or Danylyk also being able to play in defence ?

Stoke never rated Shotton good enough to play for them last season so they won't want him in the premier league. If Altrincham make a good start there is a fair chance of appearing on Setanta a few times. If Shotton is looking for a league club he has a better chance appearing on television with Altrincham rather than any club outside the premier league.

Good point. A little presumptuous perhaps in terms of us making a good enough start for Setanta to be all over us, but I reckon Ryan has genuine affection for Alty and the gap between top of the Conference and bottom of League 2 is small in my opinion.

Definately agree with this, Ryan loved playing for us last year, he was totally committed and you could see how passionate he was about the cause.

If you need an example just look at how he celebrated his goals against Sailsbury at home!

Is there not more chance of Ryan playing for us some time this season than us getting on Setanta, we would actually have to have a game televised for other teams to see him play.

I thought that if pubs already had SKY then Setanta was to be offered Free with no extra charge.
This is for pubs only though as the prices are already high.

Every BSP club are guaranteed a live game. There are two other chances of bonus appearances, 1. Doing well and being near the top of the league, 2. Playing a top club at the right time. There is also a possibility of appearing on Sky if we get an F.A Cup game against a league club.

I can't believe that any player is more likely to get spotted by a league team scout, playing for us on one or maybe two Setanta games over the course of a year than he is by playing for some league 2 team and being seen in the flesh by a scout.

Personally (hides behind sofa with tin hat on ready for abuse) I am slightly disappointed we signed Elam.  Given we already have top quality right wing in Denham and good forwards in Johnson, Little and Senior as well as plenty of cover for these positions I would rather have spent the budget on another quality centre half where we are short of options.  Given the choice of Elam or Shotton I'd take Shotton - I know the wage demands are likely to be different but I have a nagging concern that the attitudes might be too.

Please disregard all the above if you believe that living 100+ miles from the ground and not seeing any pre-season games precludes me from having a valid opinion based soley on Mr Laidlair's match reports and views expressed on here from people who have seen these guys playing pre-season.

Disagree. Sorry.

I am sure another defender will come in, and maybe on as and when is required on loan. I think people are gettin a little over excited with Ryan Shotton being able to sign for Alty. Love him back but would only ever had seen that as a loan and not a signing.

We now have Young and McGregor. Who knew Senior was going to have such a good pre-season and Elam is a class act. I believe with the 'attacking options' it will maybe force GH's hand to play more attacking and this is what the majority of the fans want. I know its not feesible in every game but it will mean one hell of an attacking bench  :)

Yes, me.

If Elam plays half as well for us as he normally does against us Little and co will be getting 5 or 6 good chances a game. Will make a change from 1 every game or so as it was last year. I'm sure the defence will be okay now we have two recognised CB's.

Well with Senior now injured (maybe for a few weeks) I think Elam is a definate must.

Whislt I love Ryan (in a manly sort of way) I believe that Elam completes a great midfield. My initial concern was why have him and Denham.

But with Elam playing left mid for the last two games I believe he offers a greater chance of getting better results than Ryan at centre back.

Dont get me wrong though if we got the chance and could afford Ryan as well then it would be HAPPY DAYS.

I do feel we still need another cente back but Lane to cente back and Robbie to left worked well last night and with Denham playing infront of robbie who overlapped it look nice sometimes.

Do we know the extent of Seniors' injury?

I dont but it looked like he sprained his ankle badly at first. However he managed to walk off the pitch pretty much on his own accordand didnt hobble too much.

If it is a sprain he could be out for anything up to a month and half but if it is it looked a light sprain and could be two to three weeks. Twisted ankle maybe two weeks.

Perhaps someone knows his true injuries?

So we hav Young, Meechan, Owen and Senior out injured now.It shows we need depth in the players as we are down to 15 already (I think).

I wouldnt like to play with 20 stitches in my mouth, mind you he probably has a much higher PV rating that i do.

I wonder if his girlfriend will dump him now as he clearly wont be as good at kissing. Now that would be worth me working on my PV levels.

Looks like we might have a little bit of budget left yet!

"Another name still on Alty fans' lips is Ryan Shotton, the impressive young defender who spent the second part of last season on loan at Alty from Stoke City. Having been released by Bournemouth his future is currently unclear, making a possible Moss Lane return the talk of the Robins' faithful. But a move looks unlikely at the moment, with Shotton making it known that he wants to play in the Football League. But Heathcote hasn't given up hope and hopes to review Shotton's situation in a month’s time".
