The same principle as the A B C game but this time the next person has to name a players begining with the last letter of the previous surname ?
Starting again this time with Stan ALLEN..... next up a current or ex player begining with 'N'

ALTY 1981,
Are you Brian Flynn in disguise...?!
Absolutely spot on with that impressive recollection.

Steve Cross scores two on his debut...and it's against the Vics - what a way to become an instant Moss Lane hero!

By way of a change for Neru - how about Nelson Stiffle? His name appears in the programme of our famous (and never mentioned by football pundits EVER!) win over Birmingham in the Welcome Altrincham section. Never heard of him but sounds a pretty cool name!
-
Nelson Stiffle played back when I was quite young. He moved onto Bournemouth & Boscombe Athletic. He was in their Cup WINNING Side against Manchester United.

You are quite correct, ALTY 1981.
Chris (Gus) Waring was signed by John King during the 1997/98 season in the Unibond League.
Flynny was a big fan of his....

Do we have access to advanced carbon dating techniques which could prove that George Heslop was once "quite young"...?

what was all that about...
Always wore shin pads that were about half the size of his shins. That is all i remember, apart from the monster hair...
-
Flynny was a big fan of his....
His profile in "The Unibond Years" reads something like this:
"His performance against Southport in the FA Trophy was an absolute disgrace. If he played for the Wales semi-pro team then that is a national disgrace. Please never darken our door again!"
:D
-
Are you talking about that long haired man mountain that started his career at Notts County before moving onto Coventry and Newcastle ?
I can remember watching him at Meadow Lane -
Did he really play for Alty ? Surely not ?

Only very briefly at the beginning of the 1998/99 season. He and Nigel Gleghorn were our coaches for the first 8 games or so but it didn't work out. There was some sort of bust up and both disappeared overnight, paving the way for us to start winning some games and eventually win the Unibond League title.
-
Well you learn something new everyday !
Thanks for that

Mister Flynn,
A question designed especially for you...
Who was the most woeful in an Alty shirt: Chris Waring or Dave Martindale?

I must insist you also consider MY all time favourites, George Yardley (45 minuteswas the length of his Alty career), and the execrable Justin Bowler.

taxi Phil,
Well, I'll concur with your nomination of Justin Bowler, whose contribution during his time at Moss Lane was nil.
However, George Yardley did actually score two goals on his debut, as I recall.
Admittedly, he did little else after that.
Didn't he also play against Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park in that 0-0 draw in the FA Cup back in 1973?
-
Alzheimer's strikes again Cult ! I'm thinking of the wrong ex-Tranmere striker.
The guy I have in mind had been playing in South Africa, and was signed "unseen" while on a boat coming home. When he appeared on the pitch he was carrying more timber than Magnet & Southern's, and had so little pace that Long John Silver's XI in the famous Python sketch would have been more effective. He was subbed at half time and never played again. Would have been early 60's ? Any other old f**t out there bail me out on this one ?
Of course, another classic ex-Tranmere signing was goalie Dick "Teflon" Johnson. I could never work out how he'd racked up 450 or so League appearances !

taxi Phil,
Could that former Tranmere Rovers striker that you have in mind be George Hudson, by any chance?
Dick Johnson was indeed pretty abysmal at Moss Lane.
-
Thanks Cult - knew I could rely on you ! That's the guy - have I remembered the circumstances correctly ?
-
Mister Flynn,
A question designed especially for you...
Who was the most woeful in an Alty shirt: Chris Waring or Dave Martindale?
Neither. Peter Frankish by a couple of miles.

Frankish ran Dick Johnson close for the runners-up spot in the "Worst Ever Alty Keeper" Competition, but the worst goalkeeper we ever had by some way was John Wood ! I could never escape the conclusion that he was really an outfield player who'd ended up between the sticks in an emergency, and had a spell cast over him condemning him to stay there for ever and be constantly abused by a public used to real keepers !
-
The worst keeper i remember at Moss Lane was Ben Williams who was on loan from Man Utd. He was absolutely woeful and somehow went on to have a career in league football! Think he's currently at Colchester.

Agreed, Williams was spuds!

He was pretty dire, but I wasn't including loan players in my calculations. In fairness to Williams, his subsequent career would indicate that he's much better than he showed at Moss Lane.
-
You could say that about a number of ex United 'keepers.
Lets hope we never sign Jim Leighton !
-
or paddy roach, jings he was dire.
