Altrincham FC First Team / Altrincham down to 13th...
« on: January 10, 2023, 10:49:10 PM »
After Boring Wood draw at Notts. I get the feeling Wrexham'll do it this season.

And in other news, Rochdale are out of the bottom two after beating Bradford City. Away. I always assumed they'd get out of it somehow, then again I assumed it about Stockport and Macc. To be fair though, 'Dale are rather better run, and I will be very happy if we can end up like them long term.

Altrincham FC First Team / Were the stewards any better this time?

Just wondering as I stuck to my guns in the end and didn't attend. I don't care what their excuses are, last season was unacceptable.

Altrincham FC First Team / Poll: where will Altrincham finish
« on: December 27, 2022, 11:10:35 PM »
Right, we are top half for the start of the new year, a tremendous achievement by the players and staff (and supporters!), and I thought it would be interesting to see where people currently see us finishing - and maybe compare it with the early season poll. Personally I think that 8th to 11th, which would represent our best finish since Maunders pulled out, is now a realistic target, but that we may just fall short. Whilst we won't suffer again the large scale changes we saw in the close season, we will probably lose one or two players, and there are some strong teams in the league. A reminder - in the first poll on where we would finish, nobody predicted a top half finish. That number again - 0.

Altrincham FC First Team / Chris Conn-Clarke goal now on Alty TV.
« on: December 27, 2022, 12:33:14 AM »
The CCC now has its own special feature on Alty TV, and if it doesn't go "viral", it certainly deserves to (442 views already) - though I must say it looked better from the Golf Road End. Let's remember too that this was against an FC Halifax side that had only conceded three goals in their last six league games.

I suspect MOM was given before the goal - exactly the reason why I'm not a fan of giving the award before the final whistle, you never know when someone is going to score a wonder goal that will be remembered for years and put a completely different complexion on things - Phil Parkinson looked like he had no doubts about his man of the match. I doubt I'll see a better goal this season.

Altrincham FC First Team / Any chance the Maidenhead match will be on?
« on: December 10, 2022, 07:04:48 PM »
Looking at the forecast for Tuesday with a maximum predicted temperature of one degree Celsius (about 34 degrees), I would expect it to be well below freezing by ten p.m. and even cloud cover would seem unlikely to save us. Should I write this one off?

Altrincham FC First Team / Pele "beginning end-of-life care".
« on: December 03, 2022, 06:21:12 PM »
Unconfirmed report mentioned by the BBC that he is failing to respond to chemotherapy.

If not the greatest, certainly one of the greatest. His record of scoring over 1,000 goals is comparable to Jackie Swindell's scoring record at Altrincham, but at the very highest level and over decades. The Yoruba must be very proud of him. I hope he pulls through.

Altrincham FC First Team / Alliance Premier League videos?
« on: December 03, 2022, 03:44:35 PM »
I was wondering if any footage exists of or directly related to (i.e. not FAT etc.) APL matches? In this age of wall to wall coverage, and when you can even see recovered film reel of the mighty Newton Heath in action, it would seem remarkable if there was a complete blank on one of the greatest league periods in Alty's league history from as recently as the 1980s.

Altrincham FC First Team / 16,511 at Notts vs Yeovil yesterday.
« on: November 20, 2022, 01:20:56 AM »
This is a new record crowd for this level of football, and by a big margin, with Notts breaking their own record set last season. Surely it is now impossible to deny that with crowds like this, and average NL crowds over 3,000 and every club currently averaging over 1,000, that the National League is now effectively "League 3", and should have three or four promotion places. It seems ridiculous that Barrow could be voted out after finishing third from bottom and yet now a club finishing in the same position is safe (though perhaps Rochdale supporters would disagree!).

Altrincham FC First Team / The Let's Have A Moan Thread
« on: November 14, 2022, 09:55:00 PM »
Anyone who really wants to complain about something, please post here. I'll kick us off.

Bloody rubbish, Alty. We're supposed to be full time, can't we spend some time coming up with a corner routine like the one for the York City goal? And what a disgrace getting rid of the iconic Golf Road trees! Quite apart from the environmental side, it removes valuable protection from wayward shots for people's front gardens and windows on Golf Road. Admittedly they have it worse at Marine, but that's no excuse...

Not related to teams/tactics, anyone who wants this please skip over.

Whilst the trough toilets may be seen as outdated and smelly, they certainly got the job done, fast. And there is an issue on the pop side.

And I would suggest that the old pop side snack bar, whilst small, could nonetheless be turned to selling old programmes/DVDs at a pinch, and as mentioned elsewhere, why not use the redundant space behind the pop side/Chequers corner for a stewards shed. I know I know, but nothing ventured, nothing gained...

Altrincham FC First Team / Woking match thread.

Anyone who just wants to talk about teams and tactics, knock yourself out.

Personally and to state the obvious, I don't fancy our chances although if we repeat our secpnd half performance against City, who knows?
Adam Virgo tells us that the Crds are hard-working and combative. Would it be too outlandish to suggest that the hard-working and combative (and club captain) Jordan Hulme be given some game time, unless there is a fitness issue? Alternatively, perhaps our leading scorer might be given more than ten minutes to try and unlock the "outstanding" defensive pair of Cuthbert and Mcnerney? Whatever the issue may have been, one would hope it is resolved by now. Kosylo aside, we are looking close to full strength now, giving the manager the right sort of problems, so hopefully we can give it a go.

Altrincham FC First Team / 10,107
« on: October 29, 2022, 11:01:53 PM »
Was this the biggest league crowd Alty have played in front of today? And what is the biggest one apart from Wrexham? I suspect the Colchester game, at least in modern times. And it's hard to believe there would have been much more in the Cheshire league - though I understand there used to be some stupidly big crowds in cup competitions, even the Cheshire cup!

Altrincham FC First Team / Poll on Alty's final position
« on: October 27, 2022, 10:28:32 PM »
I was going to save this until January, but might as well settle the negativity question.

And for the record, in this difficult season of transition to full time football and with one of the lower (one of the lowest?) playing budgets in this league, so far as I am concerned anything above 21st would be an acceptable season. And a reminder, nobody voted for top half last time.

Altrincham FC First Team / Fan zone.
« on: October 27, 2022, 09:38:11 PM »
Just for the record, on the stroke of half time, I have been positionig myself by the memorial wall on the stroke of half time and making a dash for the CSH the moment the half time whistle blows. Mostly, I have just about managed to get served and finish my drink for the start of the second half. I did a similar thing with the fan zone at the Oldham match on an admittedly busy night and missed a minute or two of the first half, with a shorter queue than I had been standing in all those times in the CSH. Still, hopefully things will improve. That has to be the aim - to get as many people as possible served at ht without missing game time. And indeed ultimately to help overturn this fatuous alcohol ban in view of the pitch at all NL games and preferably some FL games.  After all we don't have this requirement in other sports, or for that matter in NLN games such as Darlington vs. York, to the best of my knowledge. Alcohol watching sport for all, and if some spectators are a problem, punish them not the decent majority!
