scarboro

by fa................. think bishop auckland and multiply by 10.......... they stole my Flag and burned it

Most ridiculous attempt at taking the golf road either the Northwich Mods or Rochdale

Irritating little pricks award has to go to Accrington and that goes back to a bunch of school kids in the FA Cup in 1975 ? when i was a mature 14 year old
i suspect either those children never grew up or accrington perpetuates with irritating little pricks

Possibly Alfreton when we beat them 6-0 in 1998ish had to borrow our away kit to play in IIRC. Seeing as were talking about worst away fans at ML a question I've been meaning to ask for ages as I rarely do home games, do we have a mob of 14/15/16 year old chavs who make it their duty to stand near as possible to the away support for the whole game and chant really irritating and tiresome rubbish for 90 minutes a la the 'Altrincham wank wank wank' ditty which is the norm at all those horrible London overspills such as Ebbsfleet/Grays/Crawley etc etc.

Sorry but Im going to trump all those with my ace card

Worst game for fans when I was a steward also, was the Home Port Vale FA cup game a few years ago. Due to a mix up with ticket sales half the Vale fans ended up in the home end, and were chanting and very very intimidating. How that did not kick off into a major riot I will never know.

Can anybody elase trump that, or is the enough trumping for the evening.

Due to a mix up with ticket sales  - What? As in they all trekked 45 minutes up the road to buy them for the home end after they'd sold out their allocation?

Was there a major riot? I was too busy dodging punches for at least an hour to notice!!  ::)

that was a bad afternoon.  i remember trying to point out the vale fans in the Alty end to one of the police on duty.  he didn't give a toss, turned his back and walked away.

don't know anything about a feck up with the tickets.

It wasnt a mess up.

The away tickets sold out so some vale fans came a few days before and bought some for the home end.

I was dragged from the back to the front of the Golf road end for clapping our consolation!

I seem to recall that those Hartlepool fans who travelled to Moss Lane for an FA Cup tie back in November 1973 (and promptly saw their heroes collapse to a 2-0 (Dickinson; Windsor - 30 yard screamer) defeat against Alty) didn't take too kindly to this humiliation and reacted rather badly at the final whistle.

Weren't they responsible for that 'bullet hole' in the glass at the Chequers end side of the Main Stand, which remained there for years afterwards?

The gazelle (or, indeed, anyone else of vintage Alty supporting stature) - can you remember/confirm all this?
Title: Re: Its too quite!!! someone make a stupid comment or something lol!!!
Post by: SW on June 20, 2009, 08:39:08 AM
I was sat in the main stand with my dad for that Hartlepool game. A Hartlepool supporter was being chased around the cinder track by a couple of coppers, the main stand started jeering the pool fan who picked up a large stone from somewhere and hurled it into the glazed panels at the end of the stand, making that small hole which remained for years. Thankfully it was reinforced wired glass or that would have been a really serious incident.

I remember that Hartlepool game. They brought down a couple of coachloads of skinheads and they weren’t young kids either. They had been drinking in the Moss before the game but were no problem in the first half stood alongside Alty fans in the Golf Road end, the direction Alty were kicking. In the second half Alty's singing crew were stood at the far end of the popular side (where they stand today) - which was very unusual in those days as we usually stood behind the goal when Alty attacked the Chequers end as there was no segregation. When we went 2-0 up the Hartlepool fans left the Golf Road end and went along Moss Lane re-entering the ground via the Cheques end to attack Alty fans. They did indeed put a brick through the window of Cheques door from behind the goal and headed towards the Alty fans on the popular side. Alty fans being mainly very young kids made a retreat towards the Golf Road End. As we got to the half way line, a gang of Alty lads, made up of well known characters in those days, arrived. It was like the Cavalry in the Wild West movies. I remember a character from the Broomwood saying "Don’t run lads, Alty can have them". The reality was even with the reinforcements from the pubs in town we were still outnumbered. However Alty stood their ground and next thing - Bedlam. Everyone joined in, guys of all ages. I remember a tall old guy dressed in a 1940's gaberdine, and he must have been at least in his late sixties, having a real go. After about 3 waves of attacks from the Hartlepool gang, they made a run for their lives, back though the chequers end chased by Alty lads. They ran up to Sandiileigh Avenue where their coaches were parked and were protected by Pinky and another couple of Cops, who had to radio for reinforcements. I am told the coaches were ambushed as they went past Stamford Park and again near the bus station and left Alty with only one window not broken

I have had a few funny days out at home and away over the years in my drunken days- i am saving them all for my autobiagrophy part 2

Barrow, Northwich, Maccesfield, Halifax, Staylebridge, Dartford, Bishop Aukland to name  a few they were the days.

I do remeber a very funny one with Googey Stu when he told a Macc fan to take his face for a sh*t then he attacked us when we were trying to get on the coach and he asked me if it was his fault we got attacked ha ha - funny times  :)

I remember a midweek game away at Gainsborough when the coach was attacked after the game and a young George H and I plus a few others legged it after them and caught one. We passed him over to the police and then had to give statements at the police station consequently didn't get home till the early hours

I seem to remember a couple of incidents when we were on our travels. I have to mention the moronic Chelsea fans at Colchester who can forget them.
Then there as the time we went to Merthyr in 1990/91 season when we had coins thown at us when we were leaving. Also one time at Hyde the Hyde fans wee throwing stones and one of us cut his head. Alegedly by being hit by a stone but he actually ran into the floodlight pylon.

What no mention of the two away leg trophy semi finals at wycombe (81-82) and Boston (84-85).  Both were unpleasant experiences to say the least.

I was on the home end at Wycombe trying not to celebrate as each goal went in!

Frickley - not so daft.
I remember one incident at a night match in the late 70's when we were coming out of their club after a half time beer.
Some young Frickley fans started throwing snowballs at Alty fans who were already behind the goal.
Some of our fans chased them off, when some of those kids decided not to run.
A well know Alty character got a snowball smack in the face - I think it has a stone in it.

Horrible humourless bunch were they not, very odd lot in S Yorks (my Missus is from Dinnington, an old pit village), and she's as weird as they come.

I remember that game well, wasn't it just around the first miner's strike, not the Thatcher v Scargill one?

Talking of stones in snowballs, Runcorn at home circa 77-78 anyone?

Re: frickley fans.

Many yorkists are humourless dour and inward looking - I point at the woman beater geoff boycott as a prime example.  Not all yorkists, but many in my opinion are.  The seemignly continual reference to gods own county enforces that sort of attitude.

Yep Jim, you are right although I have some Cornish friends who do not have "Kernow" stickers on their car. Where my missus comes from in S Yorks they don't really have much to shout about, even North and West Yorkists seem to detest them.

god yes - they can get very tribal.  starts off as yorkists, soon splits down into north, south etc, then towns, villages.

i should move really but where I live is the exception that proves the rule.

cornwall is odd - but it's a long way and you don't pass through it very often - that must give it a bit of a uniqueness.  the only thing special about yorkshire is it is home to many of englands most revoltjing places.  rotherham, sheffield, barnsley, huddersfield, batley, middlesborough (they still claim it), harrogate, halifax, leeeds, hunslet and hull (the buggers claim that too).

I REALLY SHOULD MOVE!

cornish people are different to yorkies but they are the only other ones who define themselves by the county they come from. look at thhe glastonbury coverage, i can guarantee a couple of cornish flags at the front

the thing is that most of the really cornish people i know really think they are a different country which is the root of the pride whereas yorkshire people just know everyone else hates them so they stick together.

some of us have cause to be glad for the hatred between south/north yorkshire when doncaster/rotherham were more concerned with kicking hell out of scarboro than us

the story has been told before redhill .

but your version is a little array (is that how you spell it)

i got hit on the end of my nose by a snowball with a stone in it and lead a red mist charge of one

admittedly they were younger than me but a fair crew of them and i think somewhere in my robinsons bitter addled brain i expected them to run
alas a few stood their ground and as i arrived in their midst my kung fu kick entry went sadly wrong as my back leg slipped on ice. i went down and the vultures ran in for the kill . however one Phillip  Hall came to my rescue . as we retreated with the odd punch thrown Phil got hit by another stone infested snowball straight in his left eye he carried a fantastic shiner for weeks afterwards and has still not forgiven me.

a warning to youngsters
drinking from 11 in the railway hale then tins in the car all the way to s yorks plus two hours in the club at frickley makes you do stupid things
what a drinking car that was though phil, me , the late great henry burke and Charlie(heald green alty's dad) calnun

stupid but somehow funny

Ahh yes, but Cornwall is one of the six Celtic 'nations' with it's own language and culture and as such have more of a justification in thinking of themselves differently.

^ This ^

Cornish nationalism is a little archaic and odd (what with the vast majority of people unable to speak the language), but at least it isn't a misnomer. Yorkshire 'nationalism' is f**king pathetic. Imagine a country where one of the major financial and cultural centres has to be Hull!

You asking me out on a hot date in South Elmsall Frankie, ya smooth talkin b**tard?

I was actually referring to our FA Cup 1st round match there in 1983 when the locals (bolstered by an intellectual influx from Barnsley) were rather exuberant.

Police helmets flying in the crisp evening air, police horses charging up the slag heap, greetings with the forehead and a DIY air conditioning job on the coaches......famous South Yorkshire hospitality (taken in a rather different literal sense) is it?

i was talking to a liverpool fan the other day and he said the worst he had ever seen was at barnsley during the miners strike. in my mind the frickley game was also during the strike but in fact must have just been before - i do know that it was a notoriously hardline area and there was loads of trouble during the strike.

the cornish thing is weird and i take the piss a lot. i just about get away with it as i have been going there 20 odd years. in some ways i envy their identity, most of the people i know would say they were cornish rather than english.
we went to see ian brown at eden one year and he asked if there was anyone from devon in the audience which produced a chant of dirty northern b###rds from the people i was with. then again i heard plymouth chant that at southampton last year, they must be the only ones who can!

Frickley in the cup was during the miners strike.  lets avoid the politics of that for now - I always felt we were the filling in the fight between two sets of yobs, one called the striking miiners and one called the police.

I believe the Frickley game was in Nov 1983 and the miner's strike began in early 1984, but there was already unrest (not least over the Thatch's appointment of Ian MacGregor as head of the NCB...he had previously turned around the fortunes of British Steel, halving the work force in the space of two years). It's a minor point though and I'm having flashbacks to the blissful dreams I used to have of garrotting the mad bitch......oh dear, let's get off this subject quick.....

Gazelle- I woudl have to climb in my loft and look at my programmes - something I have been meaning to catalog for years.
If the Frickley Snowball incident was in the 80's it was very very early 80's.
I emigrated immediately after we lost to Burnley 6-1 and that was Jan 1982 so it wasnt 81/82 season. I also recall playing them around the first game of a season on a Sunny Aug Sat.
I recall seeing the incident also from a long distance - from the doorway of their club as me and Toothill were entering the ground after a half time pint. Toothill and me drove to the game in my car.

If the Frickley Snowball incident was in the 80's it was very very early 80's.I emigrated immediately after we lost to Burnley 6-1 and that was Jan 1982 so it wasnt 81/82 season. I also recall playing them around the first game of a season on a Sunny Aug Sat.
I recall seeing the incident also from a long distance - from the doorway of their club as me and Toothill were entering the ground after a half time pint. Toothill and me drove to the game in my car.

1981....around February.I think that we won 2-0.

Games at Frickley in Winter (= November to February for South Yorkshire):

1977-78 NPL March-ish 1-1 Rogers
1980-81 APL Feb 2-0 Howard, Heathcote
1982-83 APLJan 0-3 - I caught (or first demonstrated symptoms) glandular fever at that game
1983-84 FAC Nov 1-0 Gardner
1983-84 APL Mar 1-3 Skeete
1986-87 FAC Nov 0-0
1986-87 APL Feb 2-2 Timmons 2

I've ignored early or late season games - for example my first two visits in 78-79 2-0 in League and 4-0 in league cup where Colin Darcy threatened the opposition goal with every kick from hand.

as glandular fever is commonly refered to as kissing disease could you enlighten us as to how an away day in frickley resulted in said disease.

I cant believe that the incident happened immediately after half time as i would surely have been drinking the finest fizzy keg websters available in t club with you
it was a mid week night game if that helps (and very cold)being as there was snowballs i dont think it was the sunny season opener

Another close shave was arriving at frickley in the middle of the miners strike just before kick off . said tootill and i started chanting as we entered the ground unfortunately they were having a minutes silence for the first miner to be killed in the strike............... woops.

I t was alleged that said deceased digger of coal was the lad who was chased up the slag heap (wearing white jeans) by the police at the cup game.
one former chairman of afc supporters assoc who had a penchant for helping the strippers to close there performance was hearrd to comment very loudly "fancy having a minutes silence for a fecking football hoooligan" which did not endear him to the locals

Oh, I'm afraid it's much worse than that. An array is a common construct used in computer programming that permits the programmer to store more than one value in a variable, whilst retaining a single reference. I can feel geek fighting to get back out of his box (for he would never have a chance of being in anyone else's box). "Get back in there you pastlife pest"

I think I'll stick to dreaming of ways to kill (and get away with it) the Thatch....on the subject of which, does anybody remember a rather quirky punk number by Burnley's finest The Notsensibles called "I'm in Love with Margaret Thatcher"? It came with the response they received from downing street to a copy of the single they sent to the Thatch as the lable (which was incidentally Snotty Snail records).

All together now:

"I'm in love with Margaret Thatcher, I'm in love with Margaret Thatcher,
I'm in love with Maggie T,
Oh Margaret Thatcher is so sexy, she's the girl for you and me,
I go red when she's on the telly,
Cos I think she fancies me.........."

Smash the Loon.

ahh the notsensibles - back together unsurprisingly
i had the previous single 'death to disco' which had a bside called 'lying on the sofa' which was the creed by which i lived my life at the time

"I can't be bothered to make a brew
'Cos I'm lying on the sofa with nothing to do
What a silly set up
Who could ask for more
Lying on the sofa
Terribly ....bored"

gazelle - if you had asked i would have said it was at half time because it was as we changed ends

Jim - in those days didnt Frickley's ground only have one end?
I know we stood along one side in the first half and behind the goal of the snowball end in the second.
The season we played them on the opening day we did the same - but I cant remember why we didnt stand behind the other goal.

one end was just flat, it had no terracing or bank or anything so maybe people didnt like to stand there
