When I first went to Morecambe in 1977, I arrived at Christie Park at 2:15pm, and there was no-one there (officials, turnstiles etc.) so I wandered into the ground and waited for other people to turn up, eventually buying a programme at 2:50 and watched a drab match in a ground with no atmosphere, a crowd of 358 (Average age 60+), many of whom from Alty. We won 1-0 with Tony Webber scoring just after half time.
The following year, at the end of the season, another game with no atmosphere, except for the travelling Alty fans in the run up to Wembley. We won 4-2 - and our team includedthe likes Steve Johnson (Jeff's brother). And Morecambe didn't even bother to produce a programme for the match.
Typically back then Morecambe were lower mid table NPL with an average gate of around 300. Where did all the people come from? (Not Lancaster, thats for sure: - that would be like us seeing Macc getting in the football league and switching our allegance to a more succesful Cheshire based football club?)
But well done to them - it shows that if you are genuinely in it for the long haul, you can achieve lasting and sustainable progess.
