Former Grounds
« on: July 20, 2007, 01:17:18 PM »

The recent demise of Scarborough made me realise that of the 90 grounds I've been to watching Alty,a third of them are no longer in use as a football ground.

Some memories here:

Burton Albions old ground
Drill Field
Recreation Ground Weymouth
Middlemarch Lane Hinckley
Giant Axe Lancaster
Manor Park Nuneaton
Seamer Road Scarborough
Central Ground Worksop
Bishops Stortford
Ellesmere Port Town
Holly Park South Liverpool
Leytonstone & Ilford
Wexham Park, Slough
Lower Mead. Wealdstone
Maidstone United
SC**thorpe United
Huish, Yeovil
Loakes Park, Wycombe
The Windmill, AP Leamington
Bucks Head, Telford
Canal Street, Runcorn
Halton Stadium, Runcron
Central PArk, Witton
Great Harwood
Maine Road, MAnchester City
Springfield Park, Wigan
Dartford
Southbury Park, Enfield

I think that Lancaster City are still playing at the Giant Axe.

Management Guru,

Did you ever visit Nantwich's old ground to see Alty play there in the 1970s?

There's a number of grounds that I should have been to but never had - and Nantwich is one of these.  For example I've never been to Bower Fold, nor to Aggborough!

I also thought Lancaster still played at the Giant Axe and don't Telford still play at Bucks Head but have built a couple of new stands and called it New Bucks Head?

Don't get Jenga's post above? For me one of the essential parts of being a fan is visiting and "ticking off" a new ground. Its certainly not just a non league thing either, I have mates who support premier and L1 teams who feel just the same.

Then there are the train journeys when you spot a ground in the distance, always of interest.

There is much much more to football than watching the match.

Just off to dry cleaners with the anorak........

They turned the pitch 90 degrees.  They also now have a wonderful new Learning Centre part funded by a 1.2 million grant from the Football Foundation.  The ground is named after the pub on the corner which was closed down the last time I travelled past.
