Mickey Brooke was playing up front that day as JR was suspended, as he had been the previous week when Alty beat Netherfield 1-0, and he scored the goal.

The question on everyones lips when looking at that photo - where is Joe Flaherty?
Didn't Joe only join us early in 1978 ? I seem to recall he'd only played a handful of games before our big day at Wembley.

Didn't he score in the FA Trophy Semi-Final 2nd Leg at home to Scarborough in 1977....the goal that levelled it & meant we had to go on to Rotherham & ultimately Doncaster for replays?

One of my all time favourite Alty memories - Mickey Brooke hitting the bar with an absolute thunderbolt at Ewood Park when we were so close to upsetting Blackburn in the Cup !

I can see it now........just a couple of minutes from time.......what a fantastic game that was.

90 pence for a combined ticket for one adult & one junior that day.......marvellous!

Here's an Alty line up from around 1964 I think - the only players I recognise are Felix Reilly in the middle of the front row and future TV football commentator Gerry Harrison directly behind him

I think that is Ray Perry Second player from the left on the back row

Brian,

Indeed he did, levelling the aggregate score at 2-2.

He was sent off not long after that though, as I recall.

Cult is correct - scored the goal to take the game to extra time, and then himself did not play the extra time.

Was also booked at Wembley less than a minute after coming on.

He was definitely with us during the 76-7 season - I know that in October there was an outflux of players like Shreeves, Roy Hughes  and Dickenson (still leading scorer at christmas tho) and an influx of (at least) Webber and Jeff Johnson.  In addition to Joe, we had Tony Bannister who was not in the photo...

Joe scored in the 1-2 home defeat to Macclesfield Town on New Years Day 1977 so was definitely on our books by then...

Not the best quality but here's a photo of Joe Flaherty playing against Netherfield in 1977 - Tony Webber is in the background and the keeper is Netherfield's "Legendary" (but only by name) Lionel Bayliss. The pitch that day was 100% mud.

Photo from 78 of John King, Mal Bailey, Barry Howard & Jeff Johnson (and Tommy Cavanagh in the distant goal).  Good shot of the Chequers end pre terracing with the kids sat on the fencing and rear wall just waiting to fall off in the days before health & safety!

I'm not sure that is Moss Lane....I'm sure the Chequers End was steeper & higher than that?

Definitely is Brian - photo taken at a home defeat to Frickley. From what I recall, the wall shown was retained but was much lower than the terracing put in front of it

That photo of the old chequers end has really confused me.......can anyone find the recent photo of the old chequers end with the new terracing going in......coz that photo just doesn't show the old bank as big nor as steep as I remember it....it's not even as high as the bloke stood at the front!!!!...it looks absolutly and embarassingly sh*te to be honest!!!!

Finally got into my garage...

Joe Flaherty joined us at the beginning of the 76-77 season and was named as sub in our first game at home to Wigan.

The Weymouth away programme tells me we signed him from Bangor and prior to that he was leading scorer in the Cheshire League playing for Burscough, "although he is used more in a midfield role these days"

Just like Brian my memory tells me that the old grass bank was steeper than that but it was a long time ago!  I loved that Alty kit by the way.   Probably my favourite down the years.
