Another familiar old ground bites the dust....
« on: December 24, 2011, 11:27:46 AM »

Bangor City are set to play their final fixture at Farrar Road on Tuesday, 27th December 2011.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/16306532.stm

A familiar old haunt for many Alty supporters during the days of the Cheshire County League; the Northern Premier League and then the Alliance Premier League in its various guises during the early 1980s.

Here are some photographs of their new stadium:

And here's an Alty trivia question for you (apart from Brian Flynn, who knows the answer):

When was Alty's last competitive fixture against Bangor City at Farrar Road?

I haven't a clue about that answer.....but isn't it sad that another old ground with a decent atmosphere gets replaced by a soulless concrete affair......the new ground is worse than Northwich!!!!!!!

Having been to Farrar Rd which was a good big old fashioned proper football ground, I find those pictures rather sad. Yes, it probably ticks all the safety boxes etc, but it looks such a miserable functional place, I would despair if we ever found ourselves in a place like that.

The old ground was well past its sell by date, and its town centre position made it far too attractive to the supermarkets.
The new ground, although a fair walk from the town centre, is right next to many of the Uni Halls...good potential for supporters. The real fans live across the water, so its just a short swim  ;)

The major problem will be the loss of balls in the Menai Straits  ;D ;D

I remember one Boxing Day, I think in 1980 when we won 5-4 there on a bitterly cold day. We went in my car hijacking the Gazelle in Hale from an all-night bender. There was Jed Toothill, myself and I cant remember who the 4th person was with us. We couldnt find a pub open on the way back until we were past Chester.

Our last game at Farrar Road was probably late 80s early 90s cup game and we got hammered about 5-1, I think.
I particiularly remeber this because we had to weave our way through the building works of the A55 at Penmaenmawr and it was absolutly pi***ng down on the way back .
Anyone who has seen the old ground and the state it has reached would not be sad to see it go.

I was going to say their last non-league top flight season 85-86, but I don't know the date. Thought we'd only played them at home in cup competitions since then.....but my memory is not the greatest

Alty's last visit to Farrar Road for a competitive fixture comprised a 4-0 defeat in a Clubcall Cup First Round tie on Tuesday, 4th October 1988.

Here's an ultra-obscure supplementary question:

Who made his solitary appearance for Alty in that game?

If one chooses to swim in the Menai Straits, this kind of hazard is only to be expected, although shark infestation is but a minor problem...........................

There was a similar story in the North Wales Daily Post the week of our Colwyn Bay game about another match near Bangor when they lost all their balls in the sea

I remember a game there being called off around 1979-1981 ish, during very high winds and rain. I also have memories of Tony Saunders being in the bar after the postponment, claiming the referee had got his feet wet on the pitch inspection and called off the game. He seemed very angry at the time.

Q a side stop en route home at Rhyl Town, and the famous fire extinguisher incident. We only wanted to watch a football match. Any would do!!!!

Steve, I recall that particular fixture, too.

I believe that it was Monday, 2nd January 1984.

Travelled over to Bangor on the train for that one, only to discover on arriving at Farrar Road that the game had been called off at the eleventh hour.

Ended up having a few drinks in the Bangor City Social Club and then cadging a lift home from the then Alty Director, Ernie Fryer.

Just two games later, Tony Sanders resigned and departed from Moss Lane.
