When we played Port Vale in the FA CUP,  their supporters on the whole were very unpleasant!

At wycombe in the trophy semi final in 81-2.  As I lived in London, I was in the home end.

At boston in the trophy semi final in 84-5.  Unpleasant.

At birmingham - all Alty fans were made to go to the away car park, which wasn't much use if you'd come up from london by train.  And the police didn't let us out until all the coaches were gone - at which point there were just the two of us in a caged off car park "surrounded" by birmingham fans.

Corby Town feckin' donkeys years ago.  FA Trophy replay away mid week I'm sure.  Not sure how old I was but I rememebr the atmosphere being very very nasty.

Full of drunk Scots from the steel works .

Never feared too much, the streetwise bit kicks in when things are iffy and you keep yourself to yourself, but recall a few from years back.

Tottenham first time round on the walk back to the train, Frickley away once, FA Cup I think, miner tw&ts, Telford away FA cup, 86? "interesting walk to the station, and very silent one stop ride from Wellington to Telford proper,Some bits of Scarborough in the 77 Trophy semi epic,Runcorn away Trophy semi after mayhem on Stamford Park at the home leg. Also agree Port Vale and Hereford home unsegregated first time we played a conference fixture.Wycombe away Trophy semi too.

Nearly all these are 70's 80's, glad to say reasonably frequent then for bigger games but rarer now.

There was often minor trouble in those days esp Macc over Christmas, Vics once or twice and Southport. Some away trips too, like Kettering and Worcester once.

I'm sure the Gazelle has things to add here?

I got a dig from Robin Hood and I seem to remember one lad who was set upon by three arabian princes, thats what kicked it all off. They were a bunch of complete prunes. Psychotic prunes!

Barrow away in the trophy, around 95. We won the replay at home 4-0. But being caged in at Holker street was not that nice, it was definately for our protection, things started getting moody when the coach got a police escort from the turn-off on the M6. Very "ID"!

Bishop Auckland at Moss Lane Mid 90's - 1996? some history between George Shepherd and one of their players who previously broke his leg, bad tempered game, red card for their ugly centre forward and play was halted because their pissed up army of 50 alleged supportes ran riot at the Chequers end, remember police horses being brought in ! And seem to recall their coach 'waiting' for Shepherd after the game so their players could tw$t him !
not very nice day and we lost :-(

Never been threatened with violence so my memory has to be when I was a little boy in the early 70's in the days little boys were allowed to sit on the fence behind the goal.  A night match against someone crap (Great Harwood maybe) and we got a penalty at the Golf Road.  We had a centre forward called (I think) Joe McLauglin who took it.  To say he blasted it would be an understatement (or at least it seemed that way to a 10 year old boy) and although the net was in the way, all I saw was this ball arrowing towards me.  My natural reaction was to duck and I toppled backwards off the fence and onto the terrace, nearly taking my mate Paul with me.  The reaction of those behind me was a mixture of concern and outright mirth.  I was unhurt but hugely embassassed.

it was frightening just about everywhere in the 70's and early 80's as it was fairgame to hit anyone who supported the opposition, the wild days before casuals, mobile phones and scarfers etc. Singing for your team was therefore a dangerous occupation at most away games and some home games . with hindsight being a large mouthed drunk probably didnt help either maybe i should have taken the streetwise SW policy. However the drunken lout option has left me with many happy memories and a couple of scars.
i think sw has picked out the top few terryfying moments the walk back to the train at tottenham has to be up there but i didnt let that stop me going in an offy and ina dick  vandyke cockney accent ordering "6 tins of longlife and 20 fags please guv with yer apple and pears plates of meat on yer manna "
Runcorn indeed was fueled by revege for the "massacre" on stamford park in the first leg, me and bagshaw stood in their end because it was safer and when we scored we looked at each said f!!k it and went ballistic we never got touched i think all the idiots were in our end or they thought we were crazy. Wycombe ozzy the punk got arrested for his own safety i got hit on the head with a cider bottle luckily it missed my brain by six foot spent all the match stood next to policemen as i was wearing a red and white shirt in the days befor eit was fashionable to wear them so i really stood out
Bizarre places to be frightened include Buxton we got the coach bricked, some of ours were  threatened with knives at ryhope, mossley i had to hold the emergency door shut on the coach because we were under attack ended up on the pitch at bangor to get out of the scuffling.
Coming out at rotherham after our win to find the alleyway blocked by thugs obviously not from alty running towards us, alty fans turn to run only to be told oi were you going were from barnsley weve come to congratulate you and taunt the rotherham fans. Similar at doncaster for the scarboro replay, i have always had a soft spot for donny after that night of hiding behind there fans.

Even in those days i think the only place i never skulked out of in the dark was northwich as it was never frightening did leave macc quietly a couple of times though

oh the singers of today you dont know yer born

I was at the Bishop aukland match and yes it was a bit tasty. There was a really bad atmosphere in the NWS after the match, then as they were leaving it kicked off between the players and a couple of fans, one of which was me, as i was using the exit at the time and got caught up in it. A couple of galsses were broken (thrown) and a bottle or 2 were being brandished. all in all a pretty scary situation.

Think i was there at the bishop auckland game,i do remember it being volatile even in the main stand between the older fans!!!
sheperd was a knob even though he played for alty, i think there fans were on something a bit harder than lager that day they were going up to horses and punching them in the eye, think thats the most discraceful thing ive seen, oh and poor hugh cooper gettin bullied at last seasons so called freindly against fc inbreds!

when i was a youngster in the Golf road and you used to get the surges to the front...nearly tripped over and went down ..got grabbed by someone had a few nightmares about that for a few weeks after that....Scarborough in the never ending Fa trophy semi was a poisonous atmosphere at moss lane and unsegregated !!!.......Rotheram was hairy got rescued by a cop after the game....Sheffield united in the cup at the end of of the game they were being kept in chequers end until after the home fans had gone and they were trying to jump the fence and start rumbling down the pitch i couldnt get out of the golf road quick enough, mounted police stopped them the sheff united fans were feral that night .......the late 70's / early eighties was great to watch Alty on the field....but the crowds were something else was always a chance of something kicking off....

Ditto to a lot of the above, but I remember Blackburn away 73 being a bit silly, as was Halifax 75 and Sheff Utd away 81 (we got chased and hid in a curry house for a couple of hours so not too bad really). In terms of non-league you could always rely on a few nutters from Wigan, Scarborough, occasionally Boston, Mossley, Runcorn, Macc not forgetting Vics in the APL when they were the Boxing Day / New Year derbys. As Gazelle says in the 70s there was a chance of trouble anywhere - does Brian Flynn remember leaping into front gardens at Gainsboro for example - first game of the season too!

Without doubt though the scariest was Frickley away in the cup mid Miners Strike - I'll never forget a couple of mounted police chasing a bunch of blokes across the slag heap in the 2nd half . If I remember rightly it really kicked off when some Met coppers turned up after the game had finished, maybe we were instrumental in the dismantling of the Trade Union movements traditional shock troops by virtue of a jammy Phil Gardner mis-hit - no probably not.

Colchester away in 90-91 wasn't very pleasant.Home end was packed so they decided to let a load of latecomers in the away end who then thought it would be fun to start T**tting anyone supporting Alty, regardless of age!

The following we had at blackburn was massive and very frightening the one and only time i have seen "alty fans"rampage, it was like a whose who of the nutters of alty with a sprinkling of sale and wythenshawe thrown in

we played frickley in the league shortly after the cup game and alledgedly one of the people being chased up the slag heaps (can still remember his white pants in the gloaming) had been killed on the picket line. there was a minutes silence for him at the game. our bus/car arrived late and we announced our selves into the carpark/ground with a large alty chant not knowing the minutes silence was on which set the scene for a frosty reception from the locals made all the worse when Brian Taylor proclaimed "fancy having a minutes silence for a f****football hooligan"at the very top of his very loud voice. woops

another friendly night out at frickley was had when the local youths kept us under a barrage of snowballs some with stones inside. i lost my rag when one hit me in the face and ran at them expecting them to run away only to be surprised that they stood their ground. as i leapt in the air to avoid the first kick i slipped and fell over, took a couple of kicks before help arrived bagshaw then took a hit straight in the eye with a stoney snowball givingn him the best shiner i have ever seen (an event that still gets a mention to this day)

and on a lighter note one year when travelling on the team coach we stopped at the chippy in the village and on pouring salt onto my chips the lid came off and salt all over my chips , nice chap behind the counter changes the chips and aploogizes i then put vinegar on the new lot and the lid comes off "you can p1ss of your doing it deliberatly" says the nice man so i turned away to avoid confrontation and look at the next person in the queue a certain mr King . draw your own conclusions, funny at the time but perhaops you had to be there

Wasn't any more present the season after either. THe police came and picked us up on the way back to the station after we'd had mither, and took us a few stops down the line. It became apparent why, when we saw what was waiting at COlchester station.

As some of you know last season was my first at Alty after moving up from London so i have never seen any trouble at this level. But i see a few mentions of Tottenham so i thought i would tell you my experience of them.  In the early 70's they had a bad reputation. Arsenal had done the double the season before with a win at White Hart Lane and they were out for revenge. I was living in South London and my mum had decided it would be a good idea to drag me and my brother right across London to visit a mad aunt on the day Arsenal were playing Tottenham at Highbury. We were sitting on the swings at Finsbury park(Arsenal territory) and we noticed a large group gathering outside the Manor House pub about 500 yards away. The group was getting bigger every minute until there were about 1000 of them. We just sat there watching as they came towards us. They were all chanting and waving sticks/bottles/bricks etc. Most of them ran straight past us but one idiot stopped and asked what team we supported, without hesitating my brother said Millwall. This clown just smiled and said oh i thought you were Arsenal. Then he joined the others and we heard the police sirens. The group ran down Blackstock Road(completely Arsenal territory) they were smashing shops/cars/pubs and anything else in their way. We never saw any Arsenal resistance.
BTW The most violent game you will ever see is Millwall v West Ham, it makes Rangers v Celtic look like a friendly.

Who remembers the 2nd leg of the Runcorn FA Trophy semi back in '78?   As I recall lots of Liverpool fans  causing us grief.  Remember having to climb the perimeter wall at one point to avoid the aggro and being on the touchline for a couple of mins.   Then my first time seeing police dogs protecting Alty coaches from the natives......as a 13 year old it made the trouble the season before with Scarboro seem almost quaint!

Certainly the Runcorn away leg had tasty potential I went by coach but wisely left my scarf inside, got a lift back from The Gazelle's mates, Another SW if I recall so lost my treasured Alty silk scarf.

I remember now an incident with Mossley fans on my train home to Dane Rd, some of them targetted me and some other Alty fan I didn't know but some boys got on at Sale and kind of got involved, suffice to say the problem was dealt with.

Gazelle, misty memories but didn't we have some minor bother at the mighty Great Harwood once?

The worst one for me was not long after I had moved to London going back a bit now. I was at the first game against Spurs in the FA Cup and some mad friend of mine got me a ticket but in the Spurs half of the ground. I was alright till the 80th minute when Jeff Johnson equalised when we got the 1-1 draw, the only problem was I was the only one in the stand who leapt up.I am still here to tell this story, but cannot tell you some of the language used towards me due to forum regulations.

barrow in the trophy match, couple of seasons back...i remember walking down with about 400 barrow fans behind me singing...then there was loads of banter between the fans in the second half, when we moved down the other end. I remember loads of stuff being thrown and the police coming down, couple of barrow fans who had come over towards our fans were taken out and as the replay looked imminent, they started to sing "you'll never walk in barrow". It made it even more sweet when we scored that last minute goal! Wasnt at all the scariest because there was segregation and no real threat but still..

FC United was the scariest for me, because it was so unexpected and I was close to the trouble. The Colchester game at Layer Road also sticks in the mind for my brother falling over the advertisements onto the pitch during the stampede. I had the good fortune to miss the Bishop Auckland match, though my dad still remembers it vividly - sounds rough.

JTH has brought back  the personal trauma of Gainsborough on the opening day of the 1976/7 season.Last Alty fan out of the Northolme....I got ambushed on the way to the coach.Seeking refuge in a garden across the road (still nostalgically viewed to this day on visits there) I was outraged by the member of the public who was going to save me only to hear the words...."No more than one of you in there"......definitely not what I wanted to hear.Legged it up the road before succumbing to the inevitable pummelling & life scarring!!!!

I need my medication........Nurse!!!

Ah, Steve.....now you've got me on to those great football staples of the '70s.....the silk scarf!!  My dad still  has one of those original Alty ones from the 70s in the coat closet under the stairs!  Couldn't believe he still had it.   All the white letters are creased and worn (after being tied round my wrist as was the way at the time)  but, still, what a football fashion statement!  I'm sure I also had a white one with red lettering from the 78 trophy final, can anyone confirm?!

When Brian Flynn hurtled down a grass bank screaming like a rabid jackal in an FA Trophy tie at Colwyn Bay in 1996 in celebration of our last minute equaliser in a 3-3 draw.

Utterly petrifying.

i still have a wembley 78 silk scarf in one of my treasured memories boxes in some friends house or other, one day we will be reunited.

the great harwood one is something of a blur but it involved some tw@t with a dangly earing and driving round great harwood looking for him in the other sw's green hillman i seem to recall chasing him down some alleyway but surprisingly not catching him and then deciding it was better to go and drink some thwaites

one of the funniest memories of the other SW was a weymouth at home game where surprise surprise we had a scoop or twenty in the moss and he was so p1ssed he fell asleep on the chequers end and we carried hurse like with the funeral march being chanted to the golf road when we changed ends at half time.

runcorn in the trophy we got attacked as soon as we walked into the ground and as usual foxy took the brunt of the assault he was led off by the st johns lot and i remember thinking i wish i could go with him. i can still picture my view from the canal end of the ball boucing off mal baileys head and thinking oh sh*t what do we do now, the rest i recalled earlier but what a moment.

one of the funniest football violence moments was when we played rochdale in the early eighties around falklands war time. ozzy the punk had already upset my school teacher mother with his f**k argentina tea shirt as he called for me to go to the moss for our usual 11am start.

rochdale unbeknown to me had started an attempt to take the golf road and i had gone for a piss, as i walked past some young herbert leapt on my back and attacked me i shook him off and turned to face possibly 20/30 rochdale fans on my own about half way down the golfroadthinking i was done for. only to hear their leader say sorry ozzy i didnt know you were an alty fan we'll go back to our own end and they promptly all turned around and left such was ozzys reputation.

and just to prove i remeber the football as well we won, had 3? players sent off and vic Callow was the referee and did derek goulding score or was he sent off

somehow the fear made it all the sweeter when we won and boy was i happy to get back on the coach on several occassions

i dont try to gloryfy those days and am sometimes embarrassed about some of my antics (but we all know that feeling
heh gary/young denis etc)

but those days were outstanding in my life and i wouldnt change any of it.
the nearest i have felt to it was the play off wins and that oh so sweet equaliser at the new swill field

and in a slightly oiled mood it was all for my beloved Alty FC

drunken ramble over but sw does keep firing the bullets to jog ny hazy memory

FA cup replay at Ellesmere Port we won ,their fans invaded the pitch to try and get the game stopped, then walking back in the car park a group of then ambushed us,my Uncle hid behind a car,the rest of us got stuck in.In the end we beat them off,but was pretty scarey at the time, sometime in the 70s i think.
My father (alty fan)would give the Alty players some stick if he thought any of them were not playing well and then he would turn on any fan that disagreed with him( he has been seen trying to stangle the odd home home),so always tried to stay a few yards away from him.he is to old for that sort of thing though now and he still goes to Moss Lane

I too had the white Wembley 78 silk scarf with the red lettering, it was the original red one i lost at Runcorn. No idea what happened to the Wembley one, likely to be a victim of my mum's "tidying up sessions"

A later scarf was the red one with a white centre band with Altrincham printed along it, some sort of acrylic fibre. I swapped mine with a Yeovil fan in the Moss at the last game of the 80-81 season when we had won the title at Worcester the game before. still got the Yeovil scarf.

That was the game when Alty and Yeovil fans mixed on the terrace until the old Bill decided to seperate everyone. As I now had a Yeovil scarf on I was moved protesting to the Chequers end with the majority of Yeovil fans!

I was at the Frickley game and whilst it certainly was a nasty atmosphere, made worse by th goal and what happened to their keeper, I thnik there is a difference.

That was th height of the miners strike, we were well and truly in their patch, and the locals had taken all sorts of grief from all sides, including the police who behaved appalingly throughout that dispute.

Yes that match meets all the criteria of scared at an Alty games but there was a national political and social backdrop that provided the aggro.

Up The Miners.

My partner is from a former mining village in South Yorkshire, I met her in 1983 at Poly. Went to her Dad's house in the village at Xmas 83, in the middle of the strike. I got a £10 note out and ordered cod and chips in the local chippy. It was totally without thinking..............that's the most scared I've ever been in a chippy! It didn't go down well at all.l

Whats pink and covers the front of a c**t

Arthur Scargills tie

all was not as it seemed and has been portrayed on the tele etc

A mate of mine spent plenty of time up there as a bobby on the frontline and he tells stories of the quiet days when rent a mob and all were not present. They used to chat with the miners round a fire and provisions were passed from the over fed police ranks to the miners. Then the mobs would turn up and it was back to action stations.
a bit like playing football on xmas day and all that.

in my opinion mr scargill had a lot to answer for !!!!!

Maybe I get scared easier than most as I seem to have a list as long as my arm!  I had a run of beign assaulted by men twice my age due to being tall which was very annoying.  In no particular order

Macc on Boxing Day - Circa 1987 - (age12) - Me and my mate walked out of the golf road end and past a load of Macc fans.  One was really fat (oo the irony) and as we walked past I blew my cheeks out and did that spaceman walk that you used to do to really big people, he saw me and chased me.  Turned out that he was a fat sprinter, I ran up Sandileigh and for no reason at all decided to do an immediate right and hide behind Rent Equip.  He saw me and chased me down the entry and punched me in the face.  Remember beign worried about going home as my Gran was round and I would have to explain why my cheek was massive.

Colchester away 1991- As mentioned by Joe, 7000 in the ground, about 200 from Alty (which was massive for us then), the home end was full so the police thought they would let a few squaddies into our end as there was some room.  Within five minutes I looked to my right and there was windmill punches being rained on anyone from the North.  I looked left and Rob Dawson was hiding behind me despite me being 16 and him about 28! Got a smack on the nose from a man who was wider than he was tall.  One of my memories of the day was Pete Hennerly lifting children over the barrier onto the pitch to get them away.  Not nice at all.

Port Vale at home - 15 vale fans decided the home end was more fun and proceeded to ruin the match by standing right next to us chanting "vale, vale, vale".  We were awful that day.  I think it was Carl Dyson who got out very late consolation goal.  It wasn't even worth celebrating, i clapped and a bloke grabbed my adidas managers coat and dragged me from the back of the golf rd end to the front.  Really no need!

Halifax at home - The game when they all came in fancy dress.  Again managed to get a smack, this time from a guy in a prison outfit with a ball and chain around his foot. I knew then that the early release of prisoners was not a good thing.  Two arabs just laughed at me and a crocodile just  carried on smoking.

Morecambe away - I think we won one nil and I was clapping Barry Butler off when the biggest Leeds fan in the world hit me from behind.  It was like on a cartoon when a boxer knees wobble, they see colours and fall over.  Never clapped Barry Butler again.

I should point out that I have been to matches and not been assaulted!  Due to our excellent stewarding and me beign a big quicker with ducking, not seen much in the last ten years.

Happy times!

I remember one mid week match in the mid 80's away at Macc when only one exit gate was opened and we have to leave through all the macc fans. My mate got a right slap. Not scary now but when you are about 13 years old.
Frickley was pretty bad too. Guys in miners jackets climbing over the fence into the away end half way through the match and being kept in for what seemed like ages. Had forgotten all about the guy in the white pants running up the slag heap.

;DI remember the Halifax game at home sooo well, the mad thing was that they bumped into me next to rileys and for some reason i started banter with them and they were ok, obviously not intoxicated as they were later in the ground, the ball and chain guy just did a complete u-turn from nice bloke to nasty txxx, just shows you what the game does to us!!!

I remember the Southport cup match in the late eighties and there was a brief scuffle of somesort in the golf road.

At the time we had a rent a steward policy and they had no idea who was who (not that that should matter) and they had just painted yellow lines in the paddock behind the dugouts in the main stand. the steward spent the first half trying to move people who had stood there for years and didnt see why they should move. There was the usual eclectic mix of ex directors the odd  ex club secretary, famous pools collectors and webby of the meat and potato chant and clive lloyds boots story, fame)  and also  my old nemisis pc maddocks who was merrily quoting the taylor report to the steward as a reason why we shouldnt move. certain others of us had explained that the poor chap was not physically capable of throwing certain of us out without a fork lift truck. Alty score and it kicks off, my now best friend ex pc maddocks explained to the steward with much humour that the steward should duck off (i think thats what he said)and sort out the troublemakers on the terraces and leave this bunch of respectable and elderly  retired football hooligans alone to enjoy the match.

That story is only funny if you remember the weekly comings and goings on the golfroad in the years previous to  those days

i still have a wembley 78 silk scarf in one of my treasured memories boxes in some friends house or other, one day we will be reunited.

the great harwood one is something of a blur but it involved some tw@t with a dangly earing and driving round great harwood looking for him in the other sw's green hillman i seem to recall chasing him down some alleyway but surprisingly not catching him and then deciding it was better to go and drink some thwaites

one of the funniest memories of the other SW was a weymouth at home game where surprise surprise we had a scoop or twenty in the moss and he was so p1ssed he fell asleep on the chequers end and we carried hurse like with the funeral march being chanted to the golf road when we changed ends at half time.

runcorn in the trophy we got attacked as soon as we walked into the ground and as usual foxy took the brunt of the assault he was led off by the st johns lot and i remember thinking i wish i could go with him. i can still picture my view from the canal end of the ball boucing off mal baileys head and thinking oh sh*t what do we do now, the rest i recalled earlier but what a moment.

one of the funniest football violence moments was when we played rochdale in the early eighties around falklands war time. ozzy the punk had already upset my school teacher mother with his f**k argentina tea shirt as he called for me to go to the moss for our usual 11am start.

rochdale unbeknown to me had started an attempt to take the golf road and i had gone for a piss, as i walked past some young herbert leapt on my back and attacked me i shook him off and turned to face possibly 20/30 rochdale fans on my own about half way down the golfroadthinking i was done for. only to hear their leader say sorry ozzy i didnt know you were an alty fan we'll go back to our own end and they promptly all turned around and left such was ozzys reputation.

and just to prove i remeber the football as well we won, had 3? players sent off and vic Callow was the referee and did derek goulding score or was he sent off

somehow the fear made it all the sweeter when we won and boy was i happy to get back on the coach on several occassions

i dont try to gloryfy those days and am sometimes embarrassed about some of my antics (but we all know that feeling
heh gary/young denis etc)

but those days were outstanding in my life and i wouldnt change any of it.
the nearest i have felt to it was the play off wins and that oh so sweet equaliser at the new swill field

and in a slightly oiled mood it was all for my beloved Alty FC

drunken ramble over but sw does keep firing the bullets to jog ny hazy memory

what ever happened to ozzy ? was he an alty lad ?

Morecambe away - I think we won one nil and I was clapping Barry Butler off when the biggest Leeds fan in the world hit me from behind.  It was like on a cartoon when a boxer knees wobble, they see colours and fall over.  Never clapped Barry Butler again.

For those of you that don't know, this was in 1995 before Morecambe were as good as they are now. That big terrace behind the goal they all stand on was just in those days a very shallow yet far back open (and fookin cold) terrace. I tsome became apparent as we stood there before kick off waiting to see which end we wouls have to stand at that there was all sorts of knobheads out, Leeds, Preston, Sunderland. At the time this wa sthe biggest game ther efor years. I sidled up to Ecky 'Er are we getting battered in a minute?' and I swear , without averting gaze at all and within a millisecond of the question 'well judging by the T**t convention that is taing place to our left I would say so' Never a truer word spoken!!

Also Preston away in 97, we ha d anaive habit of wandering into the hardest pubs available at that time. Some f**king meathed, 'youve got 10 minutes to get out of this pub!!' us naively 'great get another half in!'

I'll elt HUghesy and Ecky finish... :P

This has to be the funniest thread ive read for some time  ;D

I haven't had to many scary moments but there has been the odd occassion.  Rotherham played Swansea in Division 3 (League 2) about 8 years ago both teams had already been promoted and whoever won the last game would win the league.  The atmosphere was very hostile all day and about 15 mins before kick off the Swansea fans started throwing bricks from Millmoor Lane into the Rotherham end and some Rotherham fans threw them back at them.  The atmosphere hadn't got any better by the end of the game  and we ended up making a swift exit at the end.  It was only the day after that we found out a Swansea fan had been killed by a Police horse where the bricks were being thrown.

Personally the most scary moment was when I took my brother to see us play Man City in the Championship and we were walking past the train station when a group of Man City fans being escorted by the police turned up.  The Police blocked off the exit with police horses, so we found ourselves trapped as they slowly backed the police horses into us, trying to force us into the train station.  I kept my bro behind me while being forced to back up against the ticket office and I shouted at the police that "We're Rotherham fans let us out!" eventually a kind WPC noticed and got us out.

One of the more funny moments was when I went to Millwall away and a friend asked "Are we still second in the league" when we were sat on a train in South Bermondsey surrounded by Millwall fans.  It was the same day when I heard a Millwall fan say to a disabled Rotherham fan "Its a good job you lost today, otherwise you would have got a kick in"

As for Alty, I went to that FC friendly and was amazed that anyone could kick off in a friendly game

That was the thing, it actually did scare me becuase surely for them to kick of in a freindly after conceding would suggest that fc fans seem to think there team is invincible and anyone who dares to mock them must come to the slaughter, i'll be honest with you it was also one of the saddest things ive seen, old men hitting kids!!! whats that about??? ???

The most scared i have been with regards to football was.My wife and I were travelling down from Manchester to Exeter to visit her mother(bad enough visiting in laws lol) The train was a Saturday Morning train from Piccadilly,Bristol City were in the old first division(premiership) and they were at home to all people Manchester United whos fans were the worst in the country at the time. They ran riot on the train we were stopped by them pulling the comunication cord  quiet a few times, there was fighting on the train and the language in mixed company was terrible. At Stapleton road station Bristol They all got off the station was crawling in police and fights started there also.Maybe those united fans are the same ones that are followers of FC united

They were appointed because they volunteered we have had a policy of we have given people chances of being a steward yes some you might not of expected and some of them have quite impressed me with how they do the job in 4 years of being chief steward we have had
only had to ask one steward to step down for certain reasons.

Ah yes, the 'Real Alty Razor Squad' fearless hard men who cut a swathe through the terraces of northern non league in the late 70s/early 80s. This name is a bit of a Moss Lane urban myth and I am told is largely bollox by one of our more 'experienced' supporters (JTH). Started as a bit of a pisstake by someone writing 'Alty Razor Squad' in marker pen in the toliets at Mossley or something then spread from there. I remember in a similar vein, Tim Burgess of Charlatans fame referring to the 'Altrincham soccer casuals' in an interview in FHM yonks ago, I don't think we had much of a mob to speak of back in the day but I might be wrong? Anyone enlighten us.

Post by: thegazelle on July 03, 2007, 01:20:42 AM
I can confirm having lived and sung through that era....... the alty razor squad did exist!!!!!

most  of them were bespectacled alty grammar school boys and it was a complete wind up.

However we were on occassions able to put to gether a very naughty crew of mainly utd and city fans who dealt out a certain amount of punishment to opposition fans who usually overstepped the mark ( crewe at home was a good example.) The usual singers were bullied out of the golf road by crewe fans and then a quite formidable mob of "alty fans " claimed it back leading to their top boy (probably self acclaimed)being battered on the grass bank by the snack bar and ending up in a very bad way in hospital and a couple of our local noterieties being arrested.

In those days there were several very unsavoury incidents but may be i am biased but it was usually after other thugs took liberties
ie the and he made me feel sick so i hit him with a brick and now he dont sing anymore in the northwich song  was true ( i can still see the victims eye hanging out to this day)

All i remember  is i ran away alot in those days and it was nice to see when certain faces turned up and looked after us. i can also remember being proud when us genuine alty fans  stood our ground. mossley a couple of times and a gang of northwich mods spring to mind

I can also remember being forced along with a certain "prospective players dad who must have signed for northwich on 500 quid a week by now"   to 'go and hit that bloke over there" so that the lder lads could go and steam in, the consequence was a slap if we didnt.

as i have said before i dont want to glorify those days but that was the way it was

The glory days of football!

Once I was in the Barinda in the small hours and a certain dribbling fiend (harv) pointed you out and said, "Thats 'The Gazelle', he was in the 'Alty Razor Squad'!"

I was in stitches at the thought of it all, and harv trying to tell me you were harder than a coffin nail if provoked. After several more Cobra's and half a popadom I then witnessed you pierce your ear with some girls earring for a laugh. Pure genius, hilarious and for a second I actually thought it was mildly scary!

I remember staggering home thinking 'Only in Hale!'

I say bring back the Razors!!!!

I don't think I was ever in on the razor squad joke, but I do recall there being some graffiti to that name on the back of the Golf rd. It was just along from another that referred to someone called Looie and his proclivities involving large predatory freshwater fish I recall. No idea what that was all about!? ;) ::)

trust me neither has looie any idesa why he ducks pike jaws for masochistic pleasure . Mr Horace Stjohn Bagshaw, the graffiti kid, had a lot to answer for with the looie graffiti, there was barely a desk at a certain boys school without reference to my looies sexual activities. I recall our physics teacher once they had actually found out who looie was, coming up to me and saying Carroll did you go to the isle of Mull for your holidays . No sir with a quizical look on my face says I . he replied "well their writing on the toilet walls about you up there now"

the ear piercing trick was after england beat paraguay in the world cup and i always thought i did it in the pub but now you mention it i fear it was upstairs at the barinda and in a fast show type way i was verrrry verry drunk.

indeed MR  bottle of stella phil, to you, was known to frequent the terraces of the golf road many moons ago,

little known facts he was a very very good footballer in his day
his father was an integral part of our giant killing exploits. i was there when he said to all and sundry "get barry howard to rip into stuart houston and you will beat them" and so it was and lo it became true and barry howard went forth and ripped into stuart houston and alty ssent them home with their tales between their legs. The gospel according to eric was well respected by mr tony and mr johnny.

I'm starting to realise that alcohol after all does not diminish the memory. After all not only do I recall the Pike(y) graffiti on the back wall of the Golf Rd but a certain individual who knows Louie also recalls it.

All that crap about alcohol affecting the brain is clearly untrue..............now then.....just who was Willy!? of Sale Moor?

Gazelle, another memory, being in a school Wednesday detention, you there too plus some bloke I can't recall....had a mullet....mad rush to a game involving blazers at yours, we didn't usually play Wednesdays, cup replay of some sort?

Sorry all if bit off topic here.
