Bit disappointed in that we have at least 4 defensively minded players on the pitch.
Still, I suppose you have to give the opposition some respect.

Half time usually changes things in games like this but please let us carry on and rack up a few more, it will be invaluable come the season's end but also will attract attention and hopefully a few more bums on seats at home. Come on Alty and get that hat trick Reevesy and at least another for young Duncan.

FFS we control the game until half time then let them in as we stop attacking. We are not good enough to contain, and there is no need to at this level, go at them we could have had loads.

Easy tiger, how about giving the opposition some credit in getting back into the game.

I think we can imagine the home dressing room being 5-0 down at half time, its a huge bonus scoring 5 on the road and three more points.  We are in good form mate, grab a beer  ;)

Honestly never thought I'd see FFS on a match thread after that.
It would have been impossible to keep that up. They come out at five down reorganise and just throw bodies forward.

They scored a good header off a corner and a decent lob in the last second.

Just sounds like Corby came out second half and played more like the team that just went about seven games unbeaten. Can't really imagine any manager telling his team to ease up or just contain the opposition to protect the lead rather than carrying on in the same way. We are allowed to give opposing teams credit for upping their game, how patronising would it be just to assume we can overrun every team we play against for 90 minutes?

Anyway, let's all be happy that this good run of ours is still going on, long may it continue! :)

We just need to kill games off Mark when we can. That's all. Great result today, but 90 mins effort and concentration. we shouldn't allow any way back.

Do you think we would have shipped the two goals if we hadn't scored the five? I didn't go so cannot comment on the performance and the tactics but to win convincingly away from home is excellent. Maybe I focus too much on the positives.

I don't think I will ever see an Alty team good enough to completely control a game for 90 minutes to a team in the same league.

We were away. We were never in any danger at all but they kept plugging away. In that moreman they also had a great player.

Their was no defensive howlers, just a good header from a corner and a great finish in the last second. We had a goal disallowed second half and clee stung the keepers gloves.

Everyone I spoke to an half time knew the second half would be very different. If they had only been two
Down I doubt they would have gone for it like they did.

Absolutely mental. The first half was some of the best football I've seen from an Altrincham side in the last 10 years. The passing, the pace, running at people, we looked absolutely unstoppable. A privilege to be there. Ok there GK had a shocker but we really forced it.

Second half the pace of the game naturally dropped and Corby on their big charity day (they'd pushed it big locally and had a much bigger crowd than usual) obviously came out and played for pride and their crowd and pulled one back and then another right at the death, which was a very tidy finish.

There can be absolutely no complaints from an Alty perspective, champagne football, hats off to Lee and the boys!

Didn't go and only heard ten minutes of the game.

The scenario was were 5 - 0 up at h/t with a nasty away cup game next week.  Quite right we relaxed and maybe didn't put the same effort in for the second 45 minutes.  If that was as a result of Lees instructions then good shout Lee.  A fine result.  Any criticism after that great result is unwarranted and unnecessary.

I think today with the cup game coming up you can excuse easing off the gas...we are the only side in the BSN without a defeat in our last 6 games...we are creeping to within a couple wins of being securely in the play offs....our GD is improving and is skewed by the results Vs brackley and chester early doors....the introduction of moult has made us more solid.

I still have concerns that are nagging the back of my head about repeated 2nd half lapses after completely overpowering teams in the 1st half...but am becoming less concerned that this will cost us a play off place....can you imagine we are 3-0 up at half time, last game of the season, we need a win to get in the play offs and the opposition clearly up for it, we are obviously going relax, they have nothing to lose, we have to give other sides credit, never going to be good enough to control a 3 goal lead..........

I actually think we'll be safely there by then though...bloody hope so anyway

1. Brackley 11 9 1 1 29:13 28
2. Chester 10 9 0 1 27:10 27
3. Guiseley 12 9 0 3 27:11 27
4. Oxford City 12 7 2 3 24:15 23
5. Halifax 10 6 1 3 20:9 19
6. Worcester 11 5 4 2 19:11 19

I'm honestly not rowing for the sake of it but we didn't ease off.

They got organised at halftime and started to play a bit.

There was no relaxing but there was no way we could have kept doing what we did in the first half for 90 mins.

It's like saying because we got five in first 45 mins we should get five in second. They were utterly bemused first half, should we stop watmore or clee or reeves or lawrie?

I'm just trying to get the point over that we didn't deliberately sit back second half.

Title: Re: Team for Corby
Post by: Jezza on October 13, 2012, 08:27:13 PM
I'm actually making the point that conceding goals is becoming less of a problem....

however it would be even less concerning if we had taken our foot off a bit!!!!  ;D

You have to admit you are getting sick of week after week explaining why teams recover and win the 2nd half against us.....this is fine while we are gaining 4 goal headstarts......I think a few people's worries are that we need at least 3 to feel confident of a draw....that's all.

A brilliant result today....I've made the point already that the team are slowly beginning to make the fans believe instead of the other way around.....in isolation I am not at all bothered about conceding twice today when we are 5-0 up....as long as we keep the habit of scoring 4/5 we will get into the play offs...but the conceding of initiative is also a habit surely you'd like to see eradictaed?..personally i think it's the last piece of the jigsaw.....and I think you are wrong....we will start to dominate games for 90 mins....and we should strive for that...

we should have got into the play offs last year....I just don't want anything to stop us this year.....and i wonder just how accepting you would be if a 2nd half collapse costs us near the end of the season......which I actually don't think will happen...we are better than you think!!!

Very much the point York ! Because we had a five goal cushion, we didn't have to pull out all the stops against a side who upped their game, but were never likely to get back into contention.

And we were able to make three sensible substitutions to give game time to Leather, Mitchley, and Lacey. My glass is three quarters full tonight.

I suppose that it all boils down to that old conundrum: would you prefer to win 3-0 or 5-2?

We've made great strides over the last eight unbeaten matches.

Two clean sheets away from Moss Lane; two FA Cup victories; the team seems to have evolved into a much more resolute unit and yet we have still maintained our attacking threat.

Now, if we can also add going on to win a game when the opposition have been ahead to our repertoire, I might just be convinced that a play-off position is well within our range!

Well, we didn't make the 100 goals last year, we've given ourselves another shot at it this year.
With the strikers we have, surely it's on the cards, especially as we now know that when we attack we have a capable defence behind us. The tide is turning, teams above us aren't invincible, roll on the next game!!

A few other random points (not about the match).

1. Match programme was crap and overpriced at £2.50-it didn't even have their league results and fixtures this season in there-surely that's a must!
2. Nice little set up but essentially their ground has two sides. No teracing or roof behind one goal and the pop side backs onto their old main stand (their old ground being next door literally-random).A classic new ground, slightly souless out of town feel to it, I hope we never move away from the town centre to Broadheath or something. Only a tenner to get in though-very cheap that.
3. Good scoff from cheery middle aged Scotch ladies. I passed on the Irn Bru though.
4. Real end of the line feel to the town. Bugger all there, think we spotted one pub in the two mile cab ride from the station to the ground (along with the Rangers supporters club, obviously). Not ever going to be troubling the scorers in the top away day category. Just like their dearly departed neighbours Rushden and Kettering. It's a bleak part of the world is Northants.

"Alty on todays showing are the best side we have played this season Watmore was excellent, but they didnt have a poor player on the park."

"Yeah i have to echo what Dave has said. We weren't up to much but that was one of the most impressive first half displays i've seen. Reeves is top top class and that wee number 7 was amazing. I was seriously contemplating losing by double figures and if alty didn't take their foot off the gas completely in the second half i think it would have been, so thanks for that!  Well done alty, and as perverse as it is i actually enjoyed watching your first half demolition of us. The movement, passing and interaction of the front line was scarey. Sometimes you have to just sit back, take your beating like a man, and move on smile"

"100% agree with you A09. Alty are a class side, really enjoyed the match today. I will never complain if the better side won and they did. Corby upped the game in the 2nd half and deserved the 2 goals."

Makes good reading doesn't it,...however, we need to do this again next Saturday and it wont be easy at Buston. ;)

from that report the following two sentences stood out for me;

Their movement, desire and finishing was first class while Corby were, at best, lacklustre and a far cry from the performances of recent weeks.

There was an improvement after the break as a mixture of the visitors taking their foot off the gas and the Steelmen finally turning up ensured it didn’t get any more embarrassing

I have been critical of lee in the past but i believe in being fair and judge people on results

Therfore i will say again well done another great result long may it continue

It would be amazing to get into the 1st round proper and get some cash for the club

We're clearly going in the right direction now and are getting the results to prove it.

The next test will be when we do eventually lose one.  Hopefully this run will calm the hysteria that can follow and we don't let it derail everything.

One of the big pluses for me yesterday was (despite the fact he was brilliant as ever) yesterday wasn't just the Reevesie show, there was quality all over.

After conceding the first goal we didn't start a Gainsborough mare.

Although Corby are no Gainsborough.

Their second was against ten men after Watmore had been taken off.

The last 3 games tell us a lot about the development of the team. Stortford was a good result  - sure on another day it could have been 3 points but they're no mugs at home. Leek was a great performance teamwork wise if not the football, but on that pitch it was never going to be. Yesterday's first half reminded me of some of the performances in 90-91 - we were superb. Still room for improvement, it was a shame we couldn't keep a clean sheet and we should play the simple ball more often when holding on to a lead.

However, that's merely wanting the team to reach their potential not an out and out criticism. There was a period going into the final few minutes where we retained possession from our box to theirs and back again for at least a minute. With that level of confidence on the ball and our attacking threat we're definitely headed in the right direction. Massive test on Saturday and a great opportunity to earn a pay-day - come on Alty make it happen.

Another excellent result. I'm genuinely amazed that conceding a couple of goals when the game was already won has annoyed some people as much as it has, but hey, people have different ways of looking at things.

Eight unbeaten, on the verge of the playoffs with games in hand and in the final qualifying round of the cup (with a few grand pocketed already). Things look bright.

The 'Sinnott Out' brigade have gone a bit quiet, haven't they?  ;D

Agree we should focus on the great result, the excellent performances going forward and not read too much into goals conceded when the result seemed safe.
I would also like to us start to be a bit tighter at the back too. Against the better teams it will be tighter and our excellent forwards could have a day off or an unlucky one. On those days a bit more solidity will count.
Oxford away is a case in point. We probably should have won away against a team doing well at the top of the league. Instead we conceded two poor goals and only got a point.
I'm more than happy with the manager and the 'score one more than the opposition' style would be fun to watch but I don't believe for a minute that is the plan. I'm sure the manger and players expect the team to be tighter at the back and concede fewer than they have so far.

Sinn' in.   :)

I think the back four has made progress from the Oxford game and is a very tight unit now.  Saturday goals weren't really avoidable (where as last season you could have looked a to a howler or no marking).

I also reckon they will continue to improve just like Moult and Rodgers.

We know what the forward line can do so these are excitng times I feel at the moment.

Just wish there was a video of Saturday so everyone could see how well we did going forward first half...it was comical watching Corby panicing.
