Anyone seen the thread on here?.........looks like they are deeper in the brown stuff than we thought!!!!!!!!

To be honest I'd try and get Baguley back here in the summer whatever league we're in. We've been crying out for someone creative in midfield all season and I mean even after we had young King on loan as he was very much a ball winner like Robbie. The lack of someone who can create openings has been the main reason we've not won that many during the improved run of form.

Totally agree with that Ballers and that is why I thought last summer that Chris Baguley would have been the better signing as he had a good passing range and was more mobile than Sedge. Unfortunately with Graham's "play safe" attitude that was never going to happen was it?!!

Think it was Charlie Mitten (ex Man U) as i remember him being player-manager in the early 60's. Not sure when I started watching Alty but guess it was about 1961. My Grandad, whom I never knew, did work for the club as I have a clock on the fireplace which they presented him for service from 1930 to 1948 (maybe some of the older fans can tell me what he did as I can't ever recall my dad telling me!!). My dad lived at the white house opposite the ground which is now the nursery and I remember him taking me to games before the W&S years. I remember us getting stuffed 7-1 at Macc and all the Alty fans giving Paddy Fagan grief......I think he may have been player-manager at the time.
Remember many of the names already mentioned but I always recall Don Cooke who was going to be a massive local star but I think he got injured and never really made it and I always have this memory of a Scottish centre forward called Harvey McCreadie, if my memory serves me well, who was awesome in the air!!
Loved the Swindells era whilst at school and got plenty of my mates from school to come and watch at the time, however, in autumn 67 one of my mates returned the favour and took me along to the Kippax and I was hooked on watching City from then on. What a year to start watching them as I was up at Newcastle on the last day of the season to see them win the league.
Came back to watching Alty in the early 70's but went back to City in 79 and ended up missing the League Championship wins!! Returned again in 94 I think when my wife suggested I go and watch City with my niece's husband but I saw that Alty were playing Kiddy who were champions but hadn't been allowed promotion. I've been coming ever since and have been a season ticket holder for about 10 years and my oldest daughter became thr fourth generation Alty fan in the Read family when she started watching about 8 or 9 years ago!!

Altrincham FC First Team / Lee Ellington
« on: March 13, 2008, 10:38:01 PM »
Just seen a post on Droylsden forum saying that Lee Ellington isn't getting much action at Stalybridge these days and would be worth them signing him in the summer. Who agrees he wouldn't be a bad loan signing for us to replace Tom Cahill? From what I remember he had a good season last year and he certainly knew where the goals were!! Maybe the change of club and better players around him would give him a big lift. Might not fancy it though after Bernard left him on the bench all the time he was here a few years back!!

Spoke to a bloke in the bar who was part of the stag do and they were up from Nuneaton and staying in Manchester (the Outback....Aussie hostal????). Don't think he told me why they'd ended up at Alty though!!!

I remember saying to Alan B a few years back that I really rated the right back from Radcliffe when we were in the Unibond and hadn't realised he'd moved to Vics. Thought he was their best player by a mile on Boxing Day and couldn't believe it when he was on the bench for the return.
Anyone for 5 at the back with Laney or Tinno alongside Shots and Young with Richard and James doing the old wing-back thing?!!!!!!

Altrincham FC First Team / The Grahams - start of a new era
« on: January 11, 2008, 11:41:58 PM »
I'm very pleased with the appointment of Graham B and do see it as the start of a new era which hopefully will see us push on to a mid-table position in the next season or so!!
I have been as critical as others about Graham H at times, mostly due to the negativity we sometimes show in our play and I do hope that we do try to be a little more positive, the fitness shouldn't really be such an issue now with the full-time lads in the team. Tuesday night was a bloody good start!!
One plea I'd like to make to the Grahams.........can we please start leaving a couple of forwards up when we're defending a corner?!!! I still can't see the point of players like Senior and Little going back to defend and it also means whatever the clearance, it's going to go to one of the opposition. I'm not sure if Pacey's 4 up is the answer but if we leave 2 up it means the opposition probably have 4 players (including goalie) back plus the corner taker so can only have 6 in or around the box.....surely we've still have enough back to defend that?!!
Looking forward to giving York a better game than the other week!!

Well pleased with this!! And he's a Bruce Springsteen fan as I remember walking into the MEN alongside him for the Sunday night gig in 1999 the day after we'd won the Unibond. I'd worn my Alty shirt to the Saturday night show after going straight there from Guiseley!!

I remember back in the early/mid 60's the MEN used to print the teams out for all the local teams, including the non-league ones, in Friday's edition and it took an awful long time, and an explanation from my old fella I guess, for me to figure out who "A N Other" was as we seemed to have two or three of them playing every week!!!!!!! This was especially evident in the Freddie Pye days when we signed just about anyone who looked half decent.

One of the big problems I believe is that Graham played the game at walking pace and doesn't seem to believe in playing the game with pace (something he has said to my mate in the past that you don't need to play football!!!)

Altrincham FC First Team / 10 more years
« on: December 27, 2007, 05:09:21 PM »
If I remember correctly Graham is about the same age as me and will be getting his state pension in about 10 years time and it is my guess that he will stay around as manager until then!! The Board has been assembled of "Graham men" and will never sack him or, as we have seen in the past, accept any resignation he might "offer".
Think about it guys, would you walk away from £25-30k a year managing a part-time football team to become what?....a postie wasn't it last time?

As a 50 something it has to be Jackie Swindells. Some of the goals he scored were just unbelievable but one of the best if I my recollection is correct was against Hyde at Edgeley Park in a CSC replay. I think we won 7-1 and JS got 5 of them but I always have this memory of one being him receiving a Hoddle type crossfield pass and controlling it with his thigh on the touchline by the main stand and as it dropped volleying it top corner job from about 35 yards. It may all be a dream but maybe someone could confirm it!!

Second choice would probably be Jeff Johnson and I'd have to have my old man's favourite player, Mickey Brooke as third choice!! Used to love the chats I had a few years back with Mickey in our local B&Q and the stories he used to tell me of the old days. God help anyone who asked him for help as to where anything was.....he'd send them off round the store so he could carry on telling me about some exploit of Kingy's on trips home from London after another win!!

How can you say that Potts, Senior and Logan can't do it from the start?!! Senior has far more enery etc than Little but it's ok for him to start against "fresh" players!! Surely it's got to be worth a try, especially at home, and see if we can get a couple of goals ahead rather than throwing the subs on to chase a game. I agree with your man of match and I too thought Asa had a great game.

The most annoying thing about GH's lack of ambition is that he has absolutely nothing to lose!! The Board will never sack him or accept any resignation and I've long accepted that he's here for the next 10 years or so (it's his living so he ain't going anywhere until he gets his pension!!).
All the comments about the negative line up are spot on but one thing I'm surprised about is that no one has commented about the totally unaceptable performance from Colin Little. He should have only made the bench today and I think his lack of effort is making O'Neill look worse. We looked so much better when Senior came on and the reason was that Chris will put the defenders (however big) under pressure whereas Little just stands off. I know Colin has been a top player these last 3 years but at the moment I think he's a luxary we can't afford.
