Title: MANSFIELD - EUROPEAN CITY OF CULTURE
Post by: taxi Phil on January 21, 2010, 10:28:40 PM
I've read two articles today on the friendly little bijou resort in the East Midlands.

The first, in The Times, was attached to a piece on the failings of Nottinghamshire's police force. It commented on a cardboard cut-out copper in the Town Centre, and drew a picture of "the former brewery town" as a bleak place where many people don't venture out after dark.

The second, in Taxi Talk magazine, told how the Council were ordering drivers to observe the 1847 Town Police Clauses Act, and keep proceeding when empty to the next nearest rank on which there is a space. This isn't easy in Mansfield, since there are apparently 100+ cabs, and only 30 or so spaces. The resulting atmospheric pollution is substantial. The legislation (the date is a clue) is designed to minimise unfair wear and tear on the horse. What a bunch of bell-ends !

Still, one gets the government (including local and law enforcement) that one deserves, or so they say. And apparently the Football Club to go with it.

Surprisingly, neither article mentioned that 8th.wonder of the World, the Field Mill scoreboard.

Perhaps that's why they get such good attendances ?

Cut out spectators policed by cut out Stewards and Policemen?

Well quite. And you can't even escape the place by train because there's no Station.
