On the match itself - Graham was scouting for Millwall wasn't he? So do you suppose that on Saturday, Graham went to watch Exeter while Graham went to the Torquay match?

We will probably be alright now I think. We have the management team and squad in place to do it, we are a match for anyone on our day as Torquay showed, we just need to avoid major problems now.

Let's bring back the Cheshire league, that will give plenty of local matches.

Those were my sentiments when the Isthmian people wanted to block the Conference South, and I can't help feeling regionalising would be a step backwards. (Of course rising petrol prices may force it eventually anyway, but til then...)

Remember how much better the Conference North was than the Unibond "village" league. Of course, if we could get all the best northern teams, we could have quite a strong northern division, but we probably wouldn't. And you can be sure that league clubs will be less willing to get relegated to the Conference if it is regional and they are playing the likes of Harrogate and Vauxhall on relegation. Never mind a third promotion place, we could be lucky to keep the two we've got.

A big blow to lose King. It's a good thing it's Droylsden and Farsley next!

Of course it also affected the England team who I make no apologies for saying we should all care about. Who knows what might have been achieved in 1958 and 1962 without Munich?
People talk about Pele but there was some fantastic English talent that came to grief that day. Very sad.

On the bench in what exactly?

Don't worry, no doubt they'll be saving him for Saturday where he'll probably play out of his skin...

Altrincham FC First Team / Taking some positives from last night
« on: February 02, 2008, 10:58:06 AM »
Firstly, ending our losing run against Woking - at least 5 and possibly more last time we were in the Conference - I remember losing 7-1 when one Clibe Walker was playing.

Also, Woking had won 2 and drawn once in their last three games, most recently ending Crawley's four match winning run with a draw, and before that beating Weymouth away.

Obviously I would have liked a win, but Woking are no mugs, and were startingto look like the Old Woking, some dangerous players on the break.

At least Graham will have a chance to watch Droylsden before we play them. I presume Karl will play. I gbenuinely think that Graham are better coaches than Dave and whoever else he's got, better tactically and whatever,  and I think it will be of more benefit to us knowing about Karl than it will be for Karl to know about us, although he will surely improve their defence.

P.S. I need to know, someone at work is convinced we'll go down, but I can't see it, especially since King signed for another month.

Altrincham FC First Team / Re: Atmosphere at Cambridge
« on: February 02, 2008, 10:12:52 AM »
Amazing atmosphere from Cambridge, four sides making noise - brilliant. The best home atmosphere since Yeovil in the Conference (apart from possibly Aldershot which was just one area making noise). After York singing for 90 minutes now Cambridge - I couldn't believe it!

It is funny that 30 coaches to Wolves should be mentioned. Apparently when we played Wolves we took about 100 coaches (but still a similar amount of fans - smaller coaches and less cars in 1966 I suppose)

From where I'm stood, what a great week!

Out of the bottom four at last, a very good appointment as assistant manager, Heathcote's future confirmed, and the pitch held up well on Tuesday night in a severe test.

My analysis of the season so far:

1st 10, we struggled and were always likely to, with a lot of new players, and changing division at the AGM.

Next 8, we did well enough to look like staying up.

Then a poor run of 5 league games as the restrictions of the transfer window started to bite.

Now with money in the bank and new players in the transfer window allowing us to catch up where we fell behind in the summer, I fully expect us to continue our recent form and stay up fairly comfortably.

So far, since we got back, we have been playing with one arm tied behind our back as we get out of debt, plus we have had AGM nonsense the last couple of seasons. When we see the real Alty next season I think we can push towards mid-table at leat.

As for crowds, full-time/part-time etc.: the fact is, we did average nearly 2000 the first time we won the Conference, and 5000 was "not unusual" in the late 1960's (when City and Utd were successful incidentally). In 1990/1, we averaged over 2000 from January when we looked like going up. And we have a higher base support than then.

Well, Shotton is effectively full-time, if we get a few more like him next season, I think we can challenge. As for people living within their means, I think it will be more than just Conference chairmen who have to learn to live within their means over the next few years. I'm afraid football crowds have probably reached their peak and will probably not be so high in the foreseeable future. I would expect some teams to return to part time, although there's a few big clubs below the Conference.

As for Graham Heathcote, his position should never have been in question, he has made us the best fully part time team in England whilst struggling with debt etc. and there's no reason why he should not make us even better from now on. I think personally that we should follow Crewe's example sooner than Newcastle United's.

I would prefer this to a passionless manager who looked like he didn't care

on course for best finish since 96 stop the slaggin

Didn't we do more attacking football in our first Conference season? And get a few thrashings. Aren't Droylsden doing attacking football now?

I think Little probably makes more difference than you might think, even if he's not scoring. If he holds the ball up and passes intelligently, that means less time for the opposition to attack us.

Looking at it, we've averaged a point a game since Droylsden, which I think is ok, with some 6 pointers coming up.

1244
And Maybe even the Dario Gradi of the non-league. But let's get on to the problems with him.

Tactics. Flowing attacking football would be nice. But then I suppose we'd end up like Droylsden. Or we can play more dedensively and still end up getting beat, the fact is whatever wee do we will struggle on our budget. It would be nice to stay up comfortably every season on the lowest budget in the league but noone can guarantere that.

Results. Someone said the players don't have the heart for it. In truth I thought the lads battled well in the first half against Stevenage. But our squad was down to the bear bones, and I suspect we miss an Owen type player more than some people realise. I used to do a bit of midfield tackling, and beieve me, it makes a huge difference to have someone who's good at it.

Struggling against 8 men.  To be fair, we did have a number of chances in that game, and also, to be fair, in the Heathcote training sessions I've seen, the players have often been made to practise shooting, being urged to "hit the target". If the players then miss in a match, what can you do?
Also sendings off is no guarantee of scoring a hatful  (as Northwich found last season), I went to a match in Germany once where three players got sent off from one team and it still finished 0-0 I think. If a team in that situation sits back and defends they can make it very frustrating for you.

This season reminds me of when we got promoted from Conf North and were sixth for ages before getting to 5th. If we get to 20th (which would be our best official finish since 1996) on the last day this season, I will be very happy, and with no nonsense next summer and no debts we might even manage a bit more next season.

And believe me, if we do stay up this season, it will be a similar achievement to promotion from the Conference North. We shouldn't be getting on the backs of the people who have done so much for this club. Let's pull together and give support to players, management and officials.

Conference league - we're havin a laugh!

I think it would be helpful if we could plan a conspiracy of our own and agree unanimously that Torquay were involved in a conspiracy, so we are in the mood for it when it is replayed!
