Weymouth looking for a new ground
« on: January 24, 2008, 09:07:32 AM »

According to the BBC website they are looking for a new ground AGAIN one that will give an all year round income so the football club will be here for ever and a day.Their present ground is not much more than 30 years old.

Their current ground is not even 30 years old because I have been watching Alty for about 25 years and I visited the old ground, where Asda is now, on more than one occasion. When we went to watch them at the beginning of last season (we were there on holiday) the talk was that they wanted to move the ground up a bit from where it is now so that better use could be made of the space around it, and they wanted to try and make the access in and out easier, but there were also a lot of people who said that the location was not good, it is too far out of the town centre.

I have only been to the new ground. That was Jan 89 and if i remembr rightly it was only the second season they had played there. And yes it is too far out of town. To top it all we got beat 3-1. Was a good weekend away tho.

i know its been done to death over the years of this forum but how good was that trophy day out (the first time we had been anywhere south of telford).
Three coaches full and loads in car etc 0-0 stan allan hit his own cross bar and so many oo agh oo agh chants we all ended up talking that way.

Certainly was a fine trip even for a 0-0. Very early set off, think it was 7:15 from the ground, dragging the then teenage me from his pit at 6am on a Saturday! My parents still can't believe it now!

Seem to recall a strange police escort back to the coaches, with the pavements full of Weymouth although I don't recall any sense of potential bother. Was it the week after we won 7-1 away at Worksop?

i remember getting off the coach and being fronted by a gang of weymouth fans i thought oh hell here we go but some wag shouted i wouldnt bother lads there's three coaches of united fans on their way. the sea of claret and blue parted very quickly. if i also remember correctly this game marked the appearance of a strange character called Brian Taylor who had hopped there from london or something and went onto become a legend in his own portakabin supporters hut.

i was happy in them days what went wrong why do you have to grow up i know somewill say i havent but it feels like i have a bit

The Trophy run that season was the start of the great years for me, big gate home games against Matlock, The Weymouth replay, Winsford I think, or was that the year after? Of course there were the Scarborough games too, the first proper trouble I recall at ML.

Were the crowds published for those games, and if so reliably?

I think that our last visit to the old ground  was early in 1987.John Williams was the manager & I believe we drew 2-2.It was around the time things started going a belly up & I seem to recall Peter Densmore refusing to play & staying on the team coach throughout the game.Later that year(September) we made our first visit to the Wessex Stadium & lost 1-0 to a Peter Conning penalty after about 83 minutes.

Yes, Winsford was the following year when we won it!

The attendance figures will be available somewhere.

Brian,

Could you be more precise please.

Thank you.

Mister Flynn,

We did play Winsford United during the 1976/77 FA Trophy campaign.

A 2-1 win at Moss Lane in the First Round courtesy of goals from Ian Morris and Jeff Johnson.

You are right of course.......although I think that it is likely that SW is referring to the 1978 Quarter Final in his post........that's my excuse anyway!!!
