Why would a player want to join a League club that will almost certainly not be a League club in three months time.
James is far too good a player for Stockport either this season or next.
My fear is that should we sell him to Stockport they wont pay us - like when we sold Ellender to Scarborough.

Regardless of their current or future league status - it's full time football as oppose to the part time

My fear is that should we sell him to Stockport they wont pay us - like when we sold Ellender to Scarborough.

that is a very real fear.  There is no point losing a quality player on the back of promises to pay being received.

I have a suggestion off the top of my head that may help in situations like this,

Club A promises to buy a player from Club B for 5 instalments of £10k each.

A central Football Transfer Fund pays Club B the £50k up front (less a % for admin) immediately.

Club A then makes 5 payments to the Football Transfer Fund.

The Football Transfer Fund is run entirely by the Football League.

The obvious advantage to me is that clubs will get paid, and the Football League will see immediately when a club fails to meet their commitments to the Fund.  Steps can then be taken to find out what's going wrong EARLIER rather than leave the situation to deteriorate further.

I see issues about the the initial funding.

Don't want to sound doom and gloom but if we lose smith I really can't see us staying up, he is without question the best player in our squad. He's a class above.

He's a good player but thats a bit extreme.

If he went we'd also have money to get someone else in.

Superb player yes...and yes we'd be less solid at the back but to say we wouldnt stay up without is nonsense in my opinion.

One man does not make a team and no individual player will ever be bigger than the club.

If James (and it is "if" at the moment) doesn't want to play for Alty anymore there is little point standing in his way. However, I don't want to have the piss taken out of us over any potential transfer fee we might be entitled to either.

We've lost important players before but that will always happen at a club like ours, in fact I would say it's inevitable. I trust in Kenny and Bimmo that if the worst were to happen they would act quickly to fill the void, and the extra money made available by his departure would do no harm in achieving this.

I guess we've just got to wait and see what happens.....

If this goes ahead......and we must trust the club on this, then I doubt our Directors are stupid enough to fall for the installments scam.

Any fee would not be large, hence Stockport borrow the full amount and the bank takes the risk...if the banks won't lend...then the promise of installments is not worth a light anyway.

Any player joining County at the moment would have to be puddled due to the situation they are in. As for Smithy have a bandage on his wrist, maybe he uses it alot during the week!

Makes our back line so solid, quality sweeper. Without him we will seriously struggle to stay up, please stay.

Stockport train more than alty, maybe he just wanted extra training?

He's a private hire driver.

Stockport would mean full time football instead of driving - so it's understandable from that respect

Stockport County are still interested in recruiting James Smith, according to today's issue of the Manchester Evening News:

"was poised to follow up with a deal for James Smith" sounds quite ominous!
