Not good enough for this league...playing way above the standard he should be. At fault for 2 goals today and totally out of his depth. Need a new right back in ASAP. Don't no why some people rate him so high to be honest
-
Couldn't agree more. I think its his attitude more than anything. Was jogging after their player for the second goal. Makes numerous mistakes each game he plays. Really needs to start putting more effort in.
-
I respect the Heathcote family but Sam is nowhere near good enough and has never shown ability for me. He can't read the game, mistimed tackles, awful positioning and not enough aggression in his play.
-
I actually couldn't agree more. Took a friend who has never been to watch alty before and he couldn't believe he was getting a game at this level. I would play Cain left back and Patterson right back. We need an experienced centre back ASAP
-
I'll reserve judgement until he's fully fit to be fair, which he clearly isn't for whatever reason.
In fact, amidst everything else I'd say the general conditioning of the squad has been below par. Only Patterson, Moran and Moult had a fully 90 minutes in them today.
Whoever comes in will have to make fitness a key factor, it's just not good enough right now.
-
Was stood over on his side in the 2nd half today and he did look very off the pace. I think he was complaining of a hamstring problem at one point as well so he's clearly not fit.
-
It wasn't only Sam carrying an injury, Goodall and Richman were clearly not right either, but there is so little to come off the bench. Young has destroyed this club and somehow there needs to be a major exodus.

We need an influx first, some fitness and organisation, and the exodus can come after that.

Yes, Neil Young has left behind an absolute mess of a squad that is now getting lower and lower on confidence game by game. The next managerial appointment is crucial. My fear is that can a board that has openly said they would have continued with the circus under Young be trusted to make a decent next appointment ? It's not the initial mistake of appointing Young that bothers me, it's the lack of awareness of what was going on under their noses.
-
It really is difficult to try and understand what Neil Young was doing in the summer.
People will know better than me as to which players would have been happy to stay given the reduced budget, but its hard to believe most of the backbone of last season's team would not have stayed given the opportunity.
As for Sam Heathcote, thought he won quite a bit in the air and came out with the ball quite well at times but then just give it away so easily.
Prefer to give him a chance when he is fit and playing in the middle.
Overall gutting to lose today, thought it was a low quality game from both teams and we deserved a point.

I counted 9 players from the squad list we could get rid of tomorrow and we would still be okay. According to the programme today we have 25 players (not including Garner who has obviously left). This would leave us with 16 and a reduced wage bill freeing up money to sign better replacements.

Actually, to be honest, I'm not really disagreeing with either of you. Just that I'm more concerned with us getting a manager and a full back, centre half to partner Hannigan, winger and some sort of physical presence in, along with getting the players fit rather than worrying about the others.

Who are the nine ?
-
More than nine I fear. 10 of the starting 11 were fine at this level. With Cain, Dens and Hannigan on top of that, you could make a case for losing 12 of those 25 players! Have we just experienced the worst management team in the history of football?
Need an experienced cb for a month urgently (last time I looked, Holness wasn't getting a gig at Rochdale). Also need a link player between midfield and attack (Durrell in and out at Chester). A full back would be good too (didn't have the best year last year, but I think Griff is still a free agent). Yep, a winger would be great, but I can't think of a realistic target and they are notoriously hard to get.
-
Sam isn't a right back and is better at centre half. He will develop into a decent player for us.
Today wasn't the best, but he'll learn and become a better player. He seemed to struggle with the pysicality of today's game and needed some encouragement.
He is comfortable on the ball and does have a good eye for the game.
Deasy will help him become a better defender.

Holness would do amazingly well to get a gig at Rochdale considering he's unattached at the moment and I'd rather play myself at left back than bring Griffin back!!
-
I thought Holness got taken on by dale. Oh well, I stand corrected if not.
Any suggestions?

If we can get an experienced centre back in I would also terminate Morans loan. Could we get Luca back? Traveling to Telford must get annoying and he is very solid at this level.
Getting rid of this many would leave us slightly short but would it leave us worse than we are now, probably not.
-
On a bright note, what a sparky performance from Harry Cain. Had more confidence on the ball than anyone. Theres bit of crisis of confidence at moment. We looked in control after 65 mins, Stockport looking desperate. But we've forgotten what its like to win. Cyrus also v good today. Thought Shaun and Alan picked the right 11 in the right shape too. Not much they can do if we cant defend set pieces (every match!).
-
Yes, I thought a few times today Luca would have dealt with that.
-
Marshall fit and available possibly?
-
with a fit Marshall and Luca I don't think we conceed the first and third goal today
-
Yes, Harry Cain is going to be some player. He reminds me very much of Duncan. He's most definitely not a left back though. Isn't it amazing to think Young brought in Charlton and Cregg when there was already a player at the club who could do the same job. How many pointless players have we signed?
-
Marshall fit and available possibly?
Just what I was saying in the bar after the game. After spending all that time and money helping him recover from his injury last season, it was a totally ludicrous decision to get rid off him without seeing if he could get fit.
He'd recovered from an injury last time he signed for us so let's get him back, get him fit and then start paying him when he starts playing.
-

All of that is nonsense. The "He'll learn" idea is outrageous. That's why we were so sh*t under Young.
Heathecote lost his head and his mental awareness and it is solely down to him that we conceded the third goal. Will he be a good player? Yes. Should he have been on the pitch at that moment? No. And that's where we as fans can pick holes, especially when he's saying he should stay on.
-
I think the key issue here is the one ballers makes about fitness. We have played much better in the last two games but look knackered in the last 10/20 mins, we dont look like we have the legs and its a worry that that is what preseason is for. I don't think we need new players, they need more stucture, confidence and fitness
-
I'm not saying that fitness isn't an issue, but we were carrying at least 3 injured players yesterday which didn't help.
-
The two are generally linked though
-
I thought Holness got taken on by dale. Oh well, I stand corrected if not.

Marcus Holness was on trial with Rochdale, and had apparently impressed, but picked up a bad injury in a preseason friendly.
-
we've got too many young players in defence we miss hannigan.....yes sam had a bit off an off game and was at fault for their winner (albeit well rehearsed corner and cracking header)...their first goal also came from a free header and the 2nd was an appalling case of almost welcoming the guy into a shooting position......
I'd rather play our right back at right back as that hampered our playing the ball out down the left.....think sam looks more of a centre half.....he was also feeling his hamstring a lot yesterday so lets not be harsh, we have what we have.........
think harry cain looks the real deal and ready, sam looks like he maybe needs a loan out at a lower level....lets not be hard on a promising player of of our own making?
remember scott leather had an absolute mare at Colchester ......but many would have him back?

I am led to believe that Charlton has already gone but Bassangue is on a 4 month contract until the end of December.

Bassangue is on a contract? I could honestly cry. I'll bet that whole episode wasn't mentioned in the chairman's interview.

We could always launch an appeal to purchase the following item(s) on his behalf:

Charlton was not registered to play a competitive fixture for us apparently.

Right - get Bassangue in the Reserves so he can get used to playing football in England. If we have him on contract for 4 months, and if he is any good then we need to get him to overcome the language barrier
-
A year ago today we beat the eventual champions Cheltenham 2-1 and a certain Heathcote scored a late winner. How things have changed in just 12 months. >:( >:(
-
It was only last week that people, when complainig about NY's team selection, were critical that 'new recruits' were being played rather than Heathcote. Now he gets his chance and he's being criticized way beyond what is deserved. He may not be as good as what we've had previously but nor are 8 of the other starting 11. Let's give the lad a chance and get off his back. Making a thread to just criticise him isn't fair.

Is Sumner on loan, or signed ?.
I thought he was signed.
Also, I assume he's currently injured.
Last night, there were 11 players in the stands / at home :
Densmore - injured
Hannigan - injured
Cyrus - injured
Sumner - injured ?
Richman - injured ?
Hattersley - injured ?
Metz - Injured ?
Bell
Hasler-Cregg
Bassangue
Charlton - Not registered
When was the last time we had a squad this big ?.

We've let ourselves down as a club in the last few months. Whether or not he's good enough (which we'll probably never find out) this is just inexplicable. If he's contracted either loan him out, register him or release him. Why leave someone in limbo and replace his position with absolute toss
-
I think we should leave young Heathcote alone. With our injuries we may well need him, plus he was far from the worst player on the pitch when he came on for Danny Hall last night.. with a bit of decent coaching and if he gets fitter he will do ok.
-
why are we knocking heathcote, when i saw him last season he was ok
-
He's unfairly become a few peoples scapegoat after one poor game out of position at right back. He's only young ffs, give the kid a break!
-
yeah but hes not good enough for this league....not physical enough and too lightweight. ship him out on loan where he can learn. Evostik at best
-
Sorry Shelmers, don't agree with you there mate. Think Heathcote is one for the future, he needs to be played in his favoured position. Not sure that loan would be the best option for him as I think we need him here. Maybe short term loan when Hannigan is back but not now. Like others say, give the lad a chance. He is young and inexperienced but has much better potential, especially in a couple of years. After all, look at his dad!!

I agree would be in my squad of 20 for sure . Will only improve over time .

did OK at Kiddy even though he was playing at RB
