Title: The benefits of the National League
Post by: Steve from Sale on August 02, 2020, 07:30:37 AM
Congratulations to the mighty Alty on their promotion, enjoyed the game though it did take a lot out of me watching at home. Missed the kids being with me but we communicated during the game on Whatsapp. Did any of the players join the fans on returning?

Thought I would show some benefits I am looking forward to next season, as follows:-

1) Goals as they are scored on Sky Sports News
2) More general coverage on Sky Sports News
3) Live games on BT Sport
4) Playing Stockport over Christmas Period again - hopefully
5) Playing Wrexham again
6) More interest from Non League Paper and decent match reports - Hopefully
7) Bigger crowds at home
8) More games for southern based fans
9) Club keeping up with 5 year plan
10) Good feeling back again
11) Welcoming new signings, whoever they may be - want us to keep all current squad
12) Direct access to league football
13) Gradual move to full time football
14) Increased attraction to sponsors
15) More benefits to sponsors from advertising
16) Ground development plans more feasible with promotion
17) Hopeful further extension of Phil and Neil's contracts
18) Weymouth weekender
19) Enter FA Cup and FA Trophy at slightly later stages
20) Not having to play Barrow, but still a league higher.

Any more anybody?

Weymouth, Wealdstone, Yeovil and Altrincham.

Familiar names back in the same league. When was the last time all four played in the same league??

The first season of the APL. We of course were champions and Weymouth second.   Somewhat poetic that we come up together!   Who were third?   Boston United!

The 1984/85 Gola League season, by my reckoning.

22. We get to play Notts County (and exact some revenge for that FA Cup First Round defeat at Moss Lane in 1972).

I was there and it was never a pen in a month of Sundays! 😉

50 years of hurt (well near as dammit !) Turn the clock forward to the start of the 1981-2 season.

Alty kick off their third season in the Alliance Premier League as reigning champions two years running.

Notts County, in the 4th Division when they robbed us, have amazingly climbed into the 1st Division for the first time since 1925-6. They open up by beating reigning champions Aston Villa at Villa Park 1-0. Villa go on to win the European Cup.

Harrogate Town are in the Yorkshire League.......in its 2nd Division. They go on to be champions.

Nothing stands still in this crazy game that we all love so much !

We are also now in the mix should things change and the fa decide to have a league two north and south. And more importantly we have a gateway to enter the tunnocks caramel wafer cup

I also think we have a better chance of staying in the league than we would have of winning the conf North. I think it will be very compe next year

Lets hope attendance restrictions end by the time we play Stockport at home - I reckon we could get 4000 plus if we are both doing well.

More revenue on all fronts and more media exposure locally and nationally means that we are in a great position to kick on from this season's success and establish ourselves next season then start looking at pushing for play offs the following season.

24. Ghosts of 15/16 and 16/17 debacles put to rest and we can move forward together united and stronger.

25. Gives our fantastic squad the chance to shine at a higher level and show everyone their class.

26. If we have to sell players, will attract bigger transfer fees - connected to 25.

27. Away segregation at Moss Lane and being segregated at away games.

Helps atmsophere so much more.

28. Most teams have a train station - some you can even fly to!

It’s always easier to stay in a division rather than actually win it but yes it seems like it would be quite an ask. And hard going to do the whole slog again.

I can do without watching us play Fylde at home again too..

29. We essentially woke up this morning to find £50,000. Okay, we didn’t find £50,000 but we could otherwise be in the position where we have effectively wasted £50k that we don’t have. Commiserations to all the other play off sides on that score but what a bonus for us!

Being asked to leave their bar when we’d all just bought a drink after the 5-0 defeat really closed that day off superbly. I look forward far more to the trip to Wealdstone in that neck of the woods.

Many trips there back in the old days. I know they've moved ground now. Wealdstone V Altrincham... Cracking fixture from years gone by.

I'm able to be on here more since I got a new phone to replace my clockwork model (!) I was sick of freezing at the computer in the back bedroom 😉
Now I'm androided up, it's great!
