Monday was not Bryan Robson's first ever visit to Moss Lane. I recall seeing him sat in the main stand watching one of our conference/gola league fixtures in the mid - eighties.
So.....
Who were our opposition?
Why was Robson at the game?

Gateshead?
I think that his brother, Justin, used to play for them...?

Spot on Cult. He was indeed watching his brother Justin play for Gateshead.
Can't remember too much about the game apart from this other than it wa 1-1 and Alty's goal was a top corner effort by Stewart Hammill.

Stewart Hamill.....now, there's a name I've not heard mentioned for a while.
Remember that goal well - an absolute 30 yard screamer in the dying minutes of the game to salvage a point during the 1986/87 season.
I strongly suspect that it was his only goal for Alty.
He could certainly challenge Lee Elam in the highlighted hair stakes....
-
Was he Scottish? I seem to remember reading that somewhere.

Indeed he was.
His profile in a programme from the 1986/87 season reports that he was born in Glasgow.
And for anyone who is interested, he drove a Ford Cortina; his drink of choice was lager and his favourite band was Level 42.
The latter revelation could go some way to explaining his dodgy 1980s hairstyle.....
