Pitch protest
« on: September 02, 2009, 07:08:50 PM »

All the talk (mainly around Chester) of protests against the owners of Chester City reminds me of going to a pre-season friendly at Moss Lane, probably in the eighties, and there being a sit down protest at half time in the centre circle.
Being Alty it was all very non threatening and good humoured, and the fans vacated the pitch when the PA asked them to, but I cannot remember what it was about.
Can anyone jog my memory???

I think the game was against Stirling Albion. The match followed a fans forum in Chequers where John King and Graham Heathcote announced that they were resigning (or had been sacked?) following a disagreement with the then chairman. I seem to recall the snack bar staff joining the protest and being fired themselves.
Was this the summer after the season we were nearly promoted - 1991?

That was one of the first games I remember at Moss Lane

I was chief Steward at the time and had 'negotiated' with the protestors to the effect that I would let them stay out until just before the start of the second half and they would leave, voluntarily and in an orderly fashion.

I can't remember who overruled me but I do remember it caused a fair amount of bad feeling when the protestors were 'encouraged' to leave

Sat there and sang "sit down, sit down next to me etc" which was just out of the charts, I recall some of the scottish team players also joining us for a few mins, always amazed me that everyone just got up and went back to the terrace at the end of half time, no trouble.
