I think it was January to about March 1963 that Moss Lane was the only place in the area where any football was played.
It snowed on Christmas day or Boxing day 1962 and then froze like I have never known. Every match at every level was postponed for something like nine weeks.
At Moss Lane we had a problem with the pitch. If memory serves correctly an over enthusiastic covering of fertilizer, in the previous summer, killed off all the grass. The surface had to be cleared, which was then covered with tons of sand. When frost came along the sand just required raking flat after each game and I think we only had one game postponed.
No doubt in the present set up we would not be allowed to play on a sand pitch, but things were less complicated in those days.
OMG I am getting old. That is nearly fifty years ago.
