I once watched  a Macc v Alty match on Teletext for 90 minutes in the early 90's and was delighted to see us holding them to 0-0 until at 935pm, it came up with 'Match Postponed'.  Also Alty v Shrewsbury in the Trophy was 0-0 throughout, until the final score flashed up as 0-1 and five minutes later, Shrewsbury's goal (81 minutes) came up.  Didn't fall for that last night!

And note Woking beat Oxford tonight - I know Oxford are out of sorts, but it does put our defeat into some perspective

Results couldn't really have gone any worse tonight - maybe a good thing the Vics game was off, we'd've ended up getting tonked...but now we live to fight again!

Still outside the zone, and now with extra games in hand!

Altrincham FC First Team / Long drawn out cup ties
« on: January 10, 2007, 07:34:02 PM »
I know the Tamworth game has taken a long time to not get played, but does anyone remember:

APL Cup Quarter Final 1981-2 (I think)

1st leg: Alty 1 Northwich 0 November
2nd leg: Vics 1 Alty3 March 1st - I think the only time I've seen Alty win at the Drill Field - and our second goal was scored by Barry Howard, who (more or less) caught the ball on the half way line, ran with it in his hands for 10 yards or so, dropped it, rounded Dave Ryan and rifled it into the top corner.
So 5 months between first and second legs, and I remember the date of the second leg as it was the anniversary of our 'tiltle clinching' 3-2 win over Weymouth a couple of years before.

Only competition for me was a NWFL game at Hyde in 1977-8 which ended up being played the Monday after the Trophy final, and after I'd been to Ewen Fields three or four times (by train) to watch Hyde United training sessions as the game had been postponed whilst I was in transit.

Luckily Liverpoool is less than 50 miles from Moss Lane or we would have been able to list thousands of Alty players of scouse origin...

I doubt if they'll be proud of it for a couple of seasons at least!

Given that the BBC story reflects almost exactly the official site, hats off to the board for their pre-emptive strike!  Debt free is in sight!  Bill

I will be motoring up from the South East for this evening's clash. I know that there's a good deal of angst in the air at the moment but after all I don't get too many chances to see the mighty red army.

This is my first trophy game since the Gainsborough replay (when I was praying for a goal to avoid extra time as I was working oin Nottingham, and up stepped Val in stoppage time).

I like the trophy as 1) we occasionally get drawn away to teams in the south (less important now we're in the Conference National)
2) A successful run means more league games arranged for midweek and therefore more opportunities to see Alty in action.

This from a man who travellled from Bristol to Crewe to watch us lose 4-0 in the CSC last season - knowing full well we'd have a second string XI on display and it was the CSC after all!

Who cares that we're not playing well?  Who cares that it's 'only' the Trophy?  Remember 9 conference teams have already gone out, and either way it will be 10 after tonight.  I'm hoping for a run!

Are you thinking of Macc 1 Alty 5 on Boxing Day 1978?  (Which wasn't bad at all, actually) or is this some long lost Cheshire League clash.

And Alty 8 Vics 1 in Jan 69 was a great day (particularly as we didn't beat them at Moss Lane again until the eighties).

Nothing to do with the pitch invasion resulting from Kieran's equaliser at five minutes to eleven. (this is not a serious question by the way)

As an Alty fan based in the South East, I took my youngest son and some of his mates from the school team to watch Woking v Alty as it was his eighth birthday.  All through the build up to the match and during the first half, I got the "It's not like this at Chelsea / Arsenal / West Ham" from the assembled mites in their replica kits.  Which went some way to spoiling my enjoyment of the fixture.

However, as the second half wore on, they became more and more captivated, even starting their own "Alty, Alty" chant from the back of the little wooden stand as we finished more and more strongly.

And then at the end, we all walked onto the pitch AND ACTUALLY SPOKE TO THE PLAYERS!!!!  WHO ACTUALLY SPOKE BACK!!

It's not like this at Chelsea / Arsenal / West Ham I said.  When can we watch Alty next they said.  Now whilst I don't expect these guys to be dedicated Alty fans, they might have been if they were based in the Greater Altrincham Conurbation, and they'l definitely watch us again once or twice and enjoy it.

Sow the seeds wide and far, and you may be surprised by the results!

Short scouse fullback?  Mid eighties?  Could it have been Andy Lee who I remember scoring a screamer from a quickly taken corner in our 3-2 win at Sutton in 83 or so?

Stupidly when I said Neil Clements, I meant Paul Clements!

Hear hear - Grays were excellent in their support for us last season.

And the best way we could repay them is to all bring 50p's for the meter!!
