The text on the back mentions an entry in Kelly's directory for 1906. Did a quick search on that on Ancestry.com and it looks like the entry is for the Red lion in Ringway searched on that and found a link to the Romper which has a description at the bottom saying it used to be called the Red Lion : http://www.pub-explorer.com/lancs/pub/romperaltrincham.htm
Looks like the same building.

If it is the same place then I remember my Mum and Dad taking me there when I was a nipper and we'd wander down to the end of the lane to 'watch the panes' from the gate which was where the Wilmslow Road was cut off when the extended the runway and put the tunnel under it.

Looks like the Romper to me, lost a lot of trade when they built the tunnel to extend the runway, and it ended up in a cul de sac.
Not been there for years , is it still going?

NB. Thats not me in the picture!   ;)

It's still going and does quite well I believe, with airport workers and guests from the nearby budget hotels.  Big food choice too.

From pub-explorer.com:

"The Romper in Altrincham is close to the airport on the road approaching the Concord Exhibition and Aviation viewing centre.  The oldest part of the pub was built some 400 years ago and it used to be called the Red Lion."

Many a night spent in there when I was younger (yes - a good few year ago but NOT when it was still called the Red Lion!!), quaffing proper Boddies. Haven't been in for a few years now, but suspect it's much like any other Chef & Brewer place  :(

The Romper was definitely formerly known as the Red Lion. I've got it marked on a pre-war map. I don't know what year they changed the name but they've still got the lion statue at the corner of Sunbank Lane and Wilmslow Road.

I believe the odd name has something to do with a beast on a coat of arms, and is short for The Romping Kitling. Used to be a good pint of Boddies back in my misspent youth.

I love old tales like this, my mum used to work for Dan Air at the airport and they formed a cricket team. I used to play a bit then as a 16-17 year old so got in their side and The Romper was our base. great Boddies before they ruined it.
