Surely there are others on rollover contracts from last season?

Drench I think

I agree with continuity but i'm not sure that keeping the same squad for 901 years will pay off in the long run.

It's a relatively young squad and should certainly be given another shot at the same level.

Yes but if better players become available then pp may have a couple of tough decisions to make.

I agree Phil, the Management team are relatively young also.
This squad could grow together and have the potential to mature into a very good team.
Yes their will be the need for the odd departure and additions, but I think the nucleus of this squad do have the potential to become something rather special.
Exciting times ahead for the team that play at WA15.
Looking forward to the next campaign.

Kingsley James has been released by Guiseley.
Could he do a job here? Am I right in saying he's been a problem in the dressing room in the past?
-
He's gone to Gainsborough

Thanks, I assume they're still chucking money about in that case. Is Reeves still there?
-
Nicky Clee left BPA, would you take him at Alty?

Nah, much rather take a punt on a young winger from the Evo-Stik.

I think Reeves on the move

Let's move on.
The only ex-player I'd have back (not including loans) is Leather, and even then I'm not that arsed. Let's find the next Clee instead.

I'd like us to have a centre half that can regular get goals from corners like the Chorley guys do.

Jones and Hannigan banged a few in this season to be fair to them, but perhaps not regular enough. I'm resigned to the fact that I will never see an Altrincham side that is good at corners.

Hoping that we give Pooley a new deal....he showed signs when he was fitter at the back end of the season and play offs that his ball retention and class are a step above anyone else in the squad.
Also hoping for Jones too, he had a much better season and has come on loads, still a young lad. I’m not sure if Ben will get a new deal, his injuries may count against him...but I’d love to see him back too. And Dens of course ......
-
Tough decisions must be made if we are to leap from play off challengers to title winners.
I want to see more of dolan and poole this season.....
-
Tough decisions indeed. I'm a big fan of James Poole and I'd love him to stay but his wage might be required to fund the winger we need.

This is a really good point.
But its tragic losing arguably your most gifted player, I'm torn.

Would like to think Dolan and Poole could both stay if at all possible

Dolan looks like a young lad with great talent. Wouldn't surprise me if he is being scouted by higher level teams amd is given a chance to progress.
Poole - if fit, he is the best player in the league by a distance. Hopefully he's signed on and can play all season to the best of his ability.
-
I would like a fit James James Poole but I worry about his personal responsibility of getting and keeping fit.
We need to be signing both Dolan and James Jones up on contracts. Both are talented young players who will attract interest. Dolan could be massive for us and deserves more games. How Chadwick was given so many more games out wide then Dolan baffled me. Chadwick wasn't even fit.

Look, we know you prefer Hancock at No10 (we all do) but its a bit unfair in my opinion to knock Poole over his willingness to be fit. He looks in pretty decent shape in general and I'm sure he'd have wanted to be involved last season as much as anyone else.

I really rate Poole but I would say he hasn't been fully fit and in shape since being with us.
I want him at the club but just not an expensive passenger.
-
And maybe that's why we haven't seen the best of him.....

Being the professional that he is, Pooley has worked incredibly hard with Tommy and Ryan to get back on the pitch. That's a fact.
Give his podcast a listen if you haven't already, it all gets discussed. We were seeing the result of that work towards the end of the season and it would be a real shame if he wasn't given the opportunity to carry that into the next one. If we want to launch a campaign to win the league then players like James Poole are vital. We aren't attracting anyone better than him to the club, in that position.

Agreed mate.
Will give it a listen.
A fit Poole is a huge player for us.

That was a top listen and I also now have a clean flat. Win win.
Maybe we need to accept that Poole may not ever have a full injury free season then. He is always worth a gamble.

Squad looking full now with hopefully a winger, Poole, Harrison and a keeper to come. Doesn’t look like there is space for improving the midfield.
We’ve Dolan to fit in as well so that’s 20 without the midfield upgrade. I know we all like just about everyone in the squad and I don’t know who I’d have released to make space but I was hoping Phil would make the tough call and upgrade one or two for next season

Go again with the same outfield players - with the addition of a top-class goalkeeper (there's your tough call), and we'll be a lot closer.
-
I agree with continuity but i'm not sure that keeping the same squad for 901 years will pay off in the long run.
Hoping for an Ashley hemmings style winger signing and maybe a big physical Paul Ellender style midfield maestro.
Very disappointed if dolan has gone....not heard anyone not say immediately what a good player he looked within 5 mins of his debut.
I said last season with a tiny bit of extra class and ambition in our signings we'd have won the league....
-
We clearly need a left winger and I have no doubt PP will have several in his sights, including Ash.
On Nolan, he looks one for the future but he would not walk straight into our team and needs time to grow and develope.
Which is why in my humble opinion joining a league club and being loaned back to us would probably be the best of both worlds for us both !
-
Yep, agree with all that. I wonder if Ash is available. It's great that we've kept the majority of last years squad together but we do need that one quality player on the left wing in order to challenge for promotion.
-

Ash Hemmings would be a huge signing.
Still feel we need a tad more in midfield unless Harrop steps up another level. Can't fault Richman or Williams just missing a little something. Maybe it is a mid with the engine and presence.
Consistent keeper. I think Drench will get a run at some point.
-
It should be remembered that Josh Mullarkey can play in midfield.
-
So can Sean Densmore
-
So can Sean Densmore
Not at the standard it is played nowadays. Quality RB and I would start him, but he would be chasing shadows in centre mid at the level now.

All points made spot on cant see Ash hemmmings happening unless on loan maybe Darren Stephenson ex county

Stephenson is a good player but has had fitness issues of his own in the past season or two.

I’ll be gutted if we don’t retain Poole. Even if he’s not playing regularly. He has the sort of vision and ability that creates chances. Very useful when you’re up against opposition that are difficult to break down. Great close control too. Hope we don’t lose him.
-
Loan players does seem to be part of the season game plan now rather than just as cover. So how does it work? Who actually pays the salaries, or does it vary from case to case?
-
I would expect pooley to be at pre season training to prove his fitness with Chadwick.
-
To improve on last season we have to make a couple of quality signings....the sort PP made with gusto in his first close season.
I am fearing another close season mis fire.
We will not win the league with loan wingers because you get the likes of daniels and the guy who's name I can't even remember and drop vital points lose momentum in between the owen dales and cisses.
The same team as last season will probably do exactly the same as we did last season....I expect at least one of darlo Hereford southport Kidderminster and York to provide just as stiff opposition as stockport and chorley.......
A fit James Poole would be as good as making one of those quality signings..
I expected a few tough decisions of releasing a few to bring in quality...
-
In all honesty Jezza, it has gone very quiet at the club recently, and I am surprised we have not heard anything further as yet re any further signings.
I can only hope there are 'irons in the fire'. We need to get things sorted with our left wing sooner rather than later. Hope we hear re Pooley, goalkeeper - Tommo or otherwise, and a left winger.
That for me should be all we need for the squad to look balanced and complete. No further news from the club on their website since last Friday, so hopefully we should get further updates. Maybe another staff/fans meeting before season starts too.
-
I suspect some patience may be required. I am sure that the management duo know what is needed to go a step better next season, however I am guessing that with a playing budget capped at a certain level and a significant proportion of last year's squad signed up, there is a need for a bit of cat and mouse with both existing players out of contract and targeted signings to ensure we get the most effective / balanced squad for the wages available. There will be other clubs out there doing exactly the same to make matters more tricky
-
In years gone by we have had no players signed on and used pre season to scrap around to get a starting 11.
We are well ahead of where we have been under previous managers i could name.
On the basis that we have signed almost a full squad already, i dont expect PP to be sat back waiting for a final few signings. He will be well on with it. Negotiating terms and competing against other clubs for the same players. Those same players will be holding out for the best options. Nothing to panic about in my eyes.

Spot on, the new season is two months away. Furthermore if we are actively looking for new players then it isn't going to be done in the public domain and quite rightly so. Let's have a bit of patience and faith in the management.
-
I'm sure that left wing is a matter of focus for us and we'll be quietly going about making a move for someone. Patience needed.
Sort that and we're away. We must have gotten through a dozen players in that position over the course of the season.

Had a think. I make it the following players who have appeared at left wing last season.
Ceesay, Dale, Daniels, Dolan, Downing, Gabidon, Hancock, Harrop, Hemmings, Mantack, Waterston
Crikey!

Remaining business ?
I expect Nolan to move on, Chadwick to maybe prove his fitness (maybe not do so ? ) and us sign a high profile proven left winger.
I wouldnt expect our budget to stretch any more than that and PP likes to use the loan market which he seems to do pretty well.

19 on the list. I reckon that could be it. The right balance of enough cover for all positions without busting the wages bill.
Also every one of them should think they have a good chance of starting. No obvious passengers with healthy competition for places.
Also none of this arsing around with triallists in preseason. A world away from Neil Young
-
Possibly a good forward from the youth or reserves to take us up to 20, unless he has other options to sign. I too will be glad if that is it, but I would like to see 4 forwards in the squad rather than three.
-
There again the final forward could be Matt Chadwick
-
There will still be triallists, definitely. Like Steve, I think there is room for one more striker and it's not inconceivable that one or two of those 19 could depart.
-
I wouldn't be surprised if we lost someone from centre mid as we have a lot of players who can fill that role.
