Title: First Alty Chant You Remember....
Post by: markecky on June 02, 2014, 12:45:22 PM
What's the first chant that sticks in your head from Alty matches, could be a generic one or an obscure one.

For me it's:

"we all agree, that Hughes is better than Timmons"

Would that be Mark Hughes coming in to replace John Timmons after the star striker had left?

Half a pound of tupenny rice, half a pound of treacle. That's the way the money goes, I shagged your gran. Heard that aged 6 or so and have never forgotten it.

Didn't Timmons sign for Macc after he left us? Was probably in one of the derby games just after.

"Nicky Nicky Nicky Daws, Nicky Daws, Nicky Daws, Nicky Nicky Nicky Daws, Nicky Nicky Daws!"

From the season we almost got promoted into the FL
To Harvey Lim, the Kettering Town keeper, "You can stick your sweet and sour up your a***" x2 (probably considered a bit racist now, but v funny at the time)
"Are you Merthyr in disguise" x2 to Barry Fry's Barnet once the 4th goal went in (a week after we scored 9 v Merthyr)
And of course the very great, "Zigger Zagger Zigger Zagger" courtesy of Kenny
So many great chants I can recall from my early days following Alty

i think i can confidently claim the royalties on fourth division rubbish and you can stick the football league up the arse

i suppose for me it had to be kenny's zigger ziggar

some that stick in the mind

with the sC**thorpe fans on one side of fthe gold road and the alty fans two feet away with one policeman looking on a tense atmosphere . sC**thorpe fans "there's only one united'' alty fans coutesy of (jed tootill i think) "and thats a chocolate biscuit" . it diffused the atmosphere for about 5 minutes but you may have to be old to understand that. There was something about sh*tting yourself and watching football.

i always loved the one where we taunted the keeper as heathcote lined a freekick up with different people shouting top left or top right . the winsford keeper held his hands in dismay when it went right in the top left corner just turned and glared to much hilarity

and who can forget celtic rangers celtic rangers

fourth division RUBBISH! or zigger zagger zigger zagger......one of the two...

Have to concur with both of those selections.

As for chants personalised for Alty players, I recall the 1970s as being simpler times:

"Jeff, Jeff, Jeff John-son!" perhaps?

Or cries of "Heath-cote, Heath-cote" whenever we were awarded a free kick on the edge of our opponents' penalty area.

A particularly bad foul on any Alty player other than our bearded captain customarily elicited the response of "Kingy's gonna get you!"

And then there was that time-honoured favourite from the late 1970s until the mid-1980s of "Slob, Slob, Slob, Slob" directed at our old friend Dave Ryan during his annoyingly impressive tenure as the Vics' goalkeeper.

Was that last one another composition courtesy of the gazelle?

Probably the earliest I remember is the 'Gola, gola gola league' at the Birmingham City game.

After the it's got to 'skip to the ball Paul Showler'.

One from when I started going to southern matches more frequently, before a game at Kingstonian early in the season (mid 90's?)

We'll score again, don't know where don't know when,
but I know we'll score again some suuuuuunnnnyyyyyy day

made me smile anyway

(2-2 draw perhaps - Stu got sat on while they scored the second?)

Mine would vs zigger zagger I also used to like eieio up the conference league we go when we get promoted this is what well sing we are alty super alty Jonny is our king

One of my own fave chants ( how egotistical ) was away at barrow many years ago and singing to them " you've all been on crime watch la la la la "whilst they jumped up at a metal fence between us like rabid dogs

Even the local police laughed :)

Happy times

August 1999.....4th game of the season after 3 defeats without scoring a goal. Kevin Ellison's first goal for Alty & Gary Talbot scored the second.

Ecky conjured up some highlights of this match a while back....but I can't find them.

Rather impressively, in my view, I managed a  week's family holiday in Weymouth, neatly sandwiched between an away fixture at Yeovil & this game.

Our capitulation that season was the stuff of legend. We beat Sutton United 3-0 at home in early March to go 10th and were seemingly cruising to a mid-table finish. However, we then failed to win any of our last 11 games and went down.

I still can't believe it to this day.

First chant I recall was when I first started watching Alty in 1976 - for some reason the crowd would regularly chant "Tommy Cavanagh" followed by clap clap clap-clap clap before the teams were on the pitch. All I remember about him was he was the son of the Man Utd trainer and the programme notes always said that "big things were expected of him".

Nor me. Forest Green were dead and buried (or so it seemed) they seemed to win as many games as we lost at the back end of that season. They stay up, the rest is history.

First chant I can remember is zigger zagger although I have a soft spot for the simplicity of "We've got Colin Potts" to Franz Ferdinand tune.

Modern favourite - Crowded House Scott Leather song

Classics include:-

We all p1ss in a green and white pot

When I was young with not much sense...

Build a bonfire... (which is rarely heard anywhere these days)

We've been once, twice, three times to Wembley... (but I never want to hear that again cos we'll be playing Droylsden)

We've got Mickey Hayde, he's much better by far (or something along those lines).
The first time I heard it was at Winsford away in the 92-93 season; it must have been an FAT or FAC qualifying game. We lost 1-0.

Other than Kenny's zigga zagga, the first one I remember was midfield maestro Heslop's take on the hokey cokey featuring Joey Pritchard's left foot (circa 1974).

I really like that - no matter how rose tinted the glasses the original doesn't really work at our level.

As a perpetual exile I like "we're here and we're from Altrincham..."  especially at Weymouth when we 'went down'

I think with football chants you're allowed a little poetic licence to be honest.

"Eeeee I eeee I eeee io, up the Conference league we go, when we achieve a respectable finish based on crowds and wage budget and steering clear of injuries to key players, this is what we'll sing, we are Alty, above average Alty, Sinnott is our king subject to a sustained run of bad results" doesn't have the same ring.

First chants...

Let's all have a disco

Aids and VD

And of course Zigger Zagger

It seems Kenny has touched most of us and not in a Yewtree way which is refreshing, especially given the form of most things Hale at the moment.
