This is a tough one as there is so much choice and so many names that I've successfully blocked out of my mind.
-
Jamie Phoenix could be in there for his poor skills and crap attitude. On that basis Twiss too.

Lee Spencer, the kid who was in goal in the mid 90s when one of Accrington's incarnations knocked us out of the FA Cup at Moss Lane would get my obscure GK vote.

Sad thing was we had high hopes for some of them signings when they arrived : Jones captained his club to FA Trophy victory a few months earlier, Elam tore us apart for Exeter, Twiss came with Conference pedigree, Bowler a former Leeds junior.......

You say high hopes Mick, well you'll have to speak for yourself mate on Twiss. Me and a few other lads were appalled we signed him after we'd been laughing at him ruining Stalybridge's title hopes after replacing Joe O'Neill there. stalybridge fans were incredulous we signed him too.
Unfortunately GH's stubbornness meant he wouldn't read those warning signs. Giving Twiss a 2 year contract confirmed one of his blind spots and was, in the end, his gravest mistake as Alty manager.

I've just visualised this shower in an actual match, and am thus too depressed to pick a bench (in theory those five should be not as good as this XI so it's pretty difficult)

-
From the glory days I give you Paul Round in midfield - could only pass it the way he was facing, and incapable of turning; up front Gary Hulmes our star signing from the Republic of Ireland who never scored for us
More recently that fat bloke we signed from Lancaster City so he could get match fit enough to knock us out of the FA Cup the following season - Tony Sullivan

Made 5 appearances at the start of 1982-3 season, then disappeared (injured I think). He was so far over the hill as to be invisible from the summit; much the same could have been said (and no doubt was) of Brian Kilcline a bit later.
I wouldn't dare pick a worst XI - I sleep badly enough as it is without the likes of John MacFadzean or the Strange brothers giving me permanent nightmares ...

Well I never, thanks for that.

So many comings and goings in non league, it's hard to keep track but the team that McKenna had the unenviable task of managing pre-Sinnott had some poor performers. How Sam Hewson managed to go from man utd youth cup winner to not being able to pass or control a football always amazed me. We had a guy on loan same season with a Mohican, I forget his name but I wasn't keen...

Point taken on Twiss Ballers, but I had not been scouting at Stalybridge or speaking with their fans, so at the time I took Graham Heathcoate's 'word for it' when he signed Twiss that Twiss would 'do things for us'
-
Alas, file him with Peter Thomson, Sedgemore snd Gareth Whalley on that one
The one that gives me nightmares is Marc Joseph. He had an atrocious pre season and we still offered him a deal! And he ummed and aahed over it for a few days. At least with Twiss he just turned out badly. Most disappointing aspect was that once he realised he couldn't cut it at bsp level he made no effort whatsoever (made a little in conf north where he was more comfortable).
-
Some notably dreadful players would be:
GK: Wayne Baker, Nick Stephens
Defenders: Dave Swannick, Greg Challender
Midfield: Brian Croft, Steve Carroll,
Attack: Chris Young, Michael Twiss,
-
Nobody has included Paul Williams in their team yet. 1995/96 season i think. Woeful although maybe didn't play enough games for us to qualify.
West Brom fans once voted him their worst ever player in an issue of Four Four Two he was that bad.
-
Williams was the first name on my team (still pondering over the defence before posting) An absolute joke of a player, a former County legend allegedly. Never forgotten him coming on as a sub at Cheadle Town, lining up a 25 yard piledriver and missing the ball completely to massive derision from those of us watching. I think that was the last time we saw him.....
-
Williams was apparently bought for £250,000 once, same as Matt Dickinson and Steven Gillespie. Bad/unlucky amount to buy a player for!
Nick Stephens, if not literally although he probably is, must statistically be our worst ever goal keeper having conceding 4 goals in each of his 3 games?
Not much of a platform that...

Few there from the dark Unibond days of early 2000's. Was that team of 2002/3 arguably the worst Altrincham side ever? In terms of league placing I think it is.
-
Andy Lee scored a screamer at Sutton in our 3-2 win on our first visit to Gander Green Lane. A corner was played back to him outside the box and he walloped it into the top corner. I thought he was a good lad.

he will always be captain hoof ball to me
-
Twiss is in most people teams we have had worse but the problem was his 2 year contract and his probable high wages and lack of effort and fitness
-
Yeh and that's what pushes me to some players, their lack of respect and their disdain for the shirt. I wouldn't particularly pick any player for the worst XI if they put a shift in no matter how limited they were.

If you were to say 'the worst ... in recent times' I might go along with you, but historically Alty were twice bottom of the Cheshire League & finished next to bottom twice. That's pretty poor. In my watching time the Les Rigby side of 1975-6 would take a lot of beating in the Useless Stakes - when you read the names of John Wood, the so-called goalkeeper & Dave Furnivall, a real liability of a centre-forward in some of these selections that's the time they came from. Thank God I was in my last year at Uni & saw relatively little of Rigby's Disasters!
-
I've distanced myself a bit from this thread on compassionate grounds for those who might read it but finally the name Dave Furnival appears, even as a youngster I could see how totally useless and slow he was, he had the turning circle of the QE2 and the speed of a sleeping dog.

Incredibly harsh on Munroe.
It depends whether you're picking players based on their average level of performance or on a period of exceptional awfulness. Munroe did ok for a while with Stephen Rose but he was also hellishly bad at times. Munroe at his worst alongside Joseph at his worst is the central defensive partnership of our collective nightmares.
-
I have to confess that I'd forgotten all about Dave Furnivall. He scored shedloads for Lancaster before we had him, but turned out to be unable to even find our banjo, let alone wallop the cow's arse.
Almost as bad was Eric Shreeve, who arrived from South Liverpool with an outstanding goalscoring record, couldn't reproduce it for us, and ended up being released after a long term injury throughout which we were paying his wages and medical fees.
-
Twiss is in most people teams we have had worse but the problem was his 2 year contract and his probable high wages and lack of effort and fitness
Twiss turned up preseason two stone over weight, and left 2 years later about three stone over weight.
As shocking as Ryan Brooke was, at least he tried, and was by all accounts a top lad in the dressing room.
Also I've Peter Thompson was terrible.
-
Has nobody mentioned Collings yet?!
Dreadful keeper every time I saw him. I loved it. 😄
-
Fair keeper most of the time also the keeper in the best side we have had in the last 20 odd years
-

If you thought that about Collings, you obviously never saw Wood, Frankish, or Schofield.....though they may have been before your time. Or Dick "Teflon" Johnson.

Is there any room for Andy Scott in anyone's team?
Joined in 2007 and was dumped when we won the AGM Cup. Truly awful.

He's my first choice left back. I hear Cult still wakes up in a cold sweat after nightmares about one of his "back passes".

No worries, I haven't done mine yet, I get to the left wing position and have a nervous breakdown. Somebody above has mentioned him though.

I'm surprised you list Gareth Whalley in that list? From what I remember he had a very good start but he then just kept getting injured... So a disappointment for sure but definitely not deserving of being mentioned in the same breath as a lot of the players being banded about in this thread!

To behonest, I nearly included him. He was generally a massive disappointment, although I do remember him producing one sublime piece of skill to set up a goal at Stafford.

We're you at the capitulation at home to Northwich on Boxing Day? Summed up everything about him. Absolutely awful player, lacked guile, strength, commitment. Had high hopes but was very sadly disappointed. His attitude to paying fans that day was an absolute disgrace.

And yet on 31st December 1975, Alty were lying in fourth position in the Northern Premier League table, merely five points behind the leaders Runcorn.
Admittedly, things did rather deteriorate over the next two months!
I think that a lot of the initial resentment to Les Rigby concerned his treatment and subsequent exile of the likes of Peter Eales; Lennie Dickinson and Graham Heathcote, coupled with him signing such abject duffers as John Wood; Les Wain and the lumbering bison that was Dave Furnival.
.

No mentions for Ben Wilkinson? Awful.
I actyually thought Elam was alright for us before telling a lie to get released and go to Vics.

Admittedly i wasn't at that game - always in Yorkshire with family over Christmas/New Year. And looking through the match reports for that season, references to what he did are very underwhelming bar a couple of games. So maybe my memory is very rose-tinted by the excitement of an ex-Bradford City from the Premier League days (family connections!) player coming to town...
On a side-note, having looked back at the results for when he was playing, had forgotten quite how horrendous that season was - we already have 1 more point this season than we got the whole of 2007-08...
