Squad number debate
« on: September 02, 2007, 11:58:28 AM »

Just having a debate last night, but trying to find people who can solve and arguement in tastys at 3 in the morning is pretty hard, so please can you help.

My arguement
In "post-modern football" (as I call it), number 4 is generally considered a (deep) midfielders shirt,
my exaples of Makelele (Chelsea), Hargreaves (United), Gerrard (England), Viera/fabregas (Arsenal)

Their Arguement
Squad numbers are pointless and people are given any number available.
In sunday league football, where there are no squad numbers are shirts 1-11 are issued each week, the two central defenders where 5 and 6
Munroe wears number 4, Sedgemore wears 6

The Answer (Wikipedia)
Although there were no hard and fast rules as to which number represented which position (especially given football's varied formations), a de facto standard emerged over time and was employed by most teams, with few exceptions:

    * Goalkeepers generally wore the number 1 shirt. This convention has become almost universal.
    * Defenders generally wore numbers between 2 and 6.
    * Midfielders most commonly wore numbers 4, 6, 7, 8, 10 and 11 (11 and 7 were typically used for the left and right wings, respectively).
    * Strikers wore 9 and 10, and less commonly 7, 8 and 11.

I think this is irrelevant now as players wear squad numbers. The system of wearing 1 - 11 was invented for the old 2-3-5 formation which Sir Alf Ramsey killed off. In that formation there was only one centre half, number 5

Squad numbers mean nothing are are generally given out to whoever, i feel. Not really a lot of thought put into it that much. However Number 6 is a 'utility' shirt and can be played anywhere (except up front/in net. 4&5 are definately centre half shirts.

                                          1

2                   4                                    5                        3

7                   6                                   8                       11

                      9                             10

That is how numbers used to be worn. I muight have 2 and 3 the wrong way round though as for 4/5 and 6/8 and 9/10 it doesnt matter if they are the wrong way round.

Originally, it would have been two full backs 2 and 3, three half backs 4,5,6 and five forwards 7-11. The numbers made sense then. Now it's all messed up. Perhaps we should go back to the old 2-3-5 formation. Who'd be wearing which numbers for Alty if we did?

Back in time:

4 Malcolm Bailey
5 John Owens
6 John King

Therefore it has to be numbers 4 and 5 for me.

But would I be correct in my recollection that Paul Cuddy occasionally wore number 6?

I'm not sure there is a definitive answer to this. I've been looking at some old teams from pre suqd number days and there is a split with some teams having 4 and 5 as CB's and some with 5 and 6 as cb's.

For me, it would have to be 5 and 6 being someone who remembers Jack Charlton (5) and Bobby Moore (6). (Roughly the equivalent of Tinson and Monroe).

right, the polls don't look good in my favour, maybe this will change your mind.
A brief history of the England number 4 shirt at the world cup,

1966 - Nobby stiles
1970 - Alan Mullery
1986 - Glenn Hoddle
1990 - Neil Webb
1998  - Paul Ince
2002 - Trevor Sinclair
2006  - Steven Gerrard

You see all midfielder, number 4 is a midfielders shirt. hence 5and6 are your centre backs.
