Title: Where next for Alty to take the next step up?
Post by: FatJan on November 24, 2021, 01:56:35 AM
If I was to suggest there was a consensus from this forum last season, it was that Alty struggled to score goals and lacked a proven striker.
We are now 16 games into a new season and with respect to new signings and retained players, nobody yet seems to have filled that perceived gap.
And yet, we are 11th, solidly mid-table.
That got me looking at our stats in the league so far.
16 games, 7 wins, 3 draws, 6 losses (fairly even).
30 goals scored (5th best in the league).
24 goals conceded (=14th).
Only 2 games in which we have failed to score.
Only 2 clean sheets.
Only 1 defeat by more than 1 goal.
Four wins by more than 1 goal.
All of the above achieved with a continued consensus that Alty lack a pedigree goal scorer, we have a well respected defence and a goalkeeper so improved that he is challenging for NL player of the season.
Given the above, where does this forum now think that Alty most need to improve in order to step up to the next level?
No agenda here. Just asking for opinions.

We need more strength in depth, or at least the resources/availability to cope.

Don't be deceived by the stats. Wayne is right - covid has cost us more points than defenders this season.
We need a good number 9. Not necessarily a prolific goalscorer actually - more a beast of a striker who can mix it with big centre backs and cause mayhem. Quigley at Yeovil ain't prolific but would be absolutely perfect.

We're much improved from last season and when everybody is fit you look at the bench and see good players ready to come on.

As has been highlighted we're just missing the final piece of the jigsaw the elusive natural goal scorer. I'm sure PP and NS have identified areas where they can see us improving and no doubt have identified players to fill those gaps.

We've proved we can compete with the big spenders and most of them are starting to respect us. Long may it continue that the big time Charlie's think they can steam roller us.

With a couple of additions we'll be in the mix.

At the end of the day we are the best semi professional team in the country.

Next move has got to be a hybrid team.

If Carver continues to do well at Southport he could well be worth an enquiry, it's just whether he can make the step up.

Surprised to see we're 5th highest goalscorers! - fair play, we've definitely been entertained this season.

Also I still feel we have to take punts on undoubtedly talented but injury-prone players, meaning we drift through periods of the season with higher-than-average squad rotation. It seems everyone in the squad at some point has had a period on the sidelines, COVID or otherwise...

I agree with this. A striker who can impose himself on defences, and create space for others in doing so, is what we need most. We've plenty of good finishers who can capitalise on that. If he can pick up 10-12 goals himself, so much the better

5th highest goalscorers, but no one anywhere near the top... https://www.soccerstats.com/scorers.asp?league=england5

Highest is Matty Kosylo with 4, which shows we are scoring from all positions!
We have the best goal difference of all the 4 teams on 24 points - all augers well.

This shows to me what a TEAM we are!

Yes Kosylo has 4 but so too has Hancock, Mooney and Colclough. Jake and A-Jay have 3.
If you add A-Jay, Tom and Marcus' goals you have seven, which considering they rarely play together means that is what we are getting from centre forward - not too bad.
