Title: The last time we won the first 5 league games in a season...
Post by: ManagementGuru on August 27, 2013, 02:47:00 PM
... we never have!!

But two precedents for 4 wins on the bounce:

77-78 Worksop (h), Lancaster (a), Scarboro (a) (from 1-0 down with 10 men), Gateshead (h) - but followed by 3 draws and then consecutive home defeats by Frickley and Buxton.  Finished in second place a long way behind Mossley

67-68 New Brighton (h), Stalybridge (a), Frickley (a), Stalybridge (h) - followed by home draw with unfancied Buxton.  Finished second behind Macc that season.  Our first 3 home games attracted crowds of 3395, 3719 and 3812.

In terms of crowds the Stockport game was our biggest home league gate since "3000" saw us beat Barnet 4-1 on 30 April 1991 and before that 3146 saw us draw 2-2 with Wigan on 28 Dec 1974, when Everton tickets were on sale.

The last time we had more in Moss Lane in any competition than for County was 3302 against Darlington in the FA Cup on 8th December 2001, so a bigger gate than the Cup matches against Burton, Millwall and Luton

I think we had a very similar gate to Saturday at home to Yeovil in 1981 after clinching the APL title at Worcester.

Without looking, i think that Wrexham game had a crowd of about 2,600, I remember a gate of around 2,300 for a midweek game against Macc in about 94 also

1962-3:
18 Aug Chester Res (A) 2-1
20 Aug Winsford (H) 4-2
25 Aug Sankeys (H) 1-0
29 Aug Oswestry (A) 3-1
3 Sep Oswestry (H) 3-0
12 Sep Winsford (A) 3-2
We lost a League Cup game at Ashton 0-1 on 1 Sep but that doesn't count as far as this thread is concerned.
Re crowds -
Wrexham was 2619; Yeovil was 2864.

Macc in 87-88 season was 2,630

And was 2,139 and 2,023 the following two years

Also had 2,834 and 2,306 in FA cup replays against them in 88-89 and 90-91

Remember the 67-68 sequence also remember the team got some stick for only drawing 1-1 with Buxton we usually beat them 5 or 6 nil

20+ years on does anybody now the real attendance for this fixture?  I was on the Golf Road and it seemed to me that the whole place was rammed to the gills.

Well, the last game of that particular season (v Boston) had a published gate of 1736. Popular belief at the time - based on what the eye could see - was that the real gate was 736 & the 1 on the front had something to do with the Barnet game, when the official maximum capacity had been 3000; so 4000 would certainly be a realistic minimum figure for that fixture. I don't think any figure other than the 3000 was ever published, though.

You are closer than you would believe with that extimate.

The Police commander on that day took what might be called a pragmatic view of official capacity figures

The club declared it was 4100 after but I happen to know the actual undeclared figure was 5100. Over the next 3 home matches the gates were adjusted until it was back to the correct total on the counters. Like you say, it was a different world in safety terms them days.

Would it be pedantic to highlight it was an early kickoff? :D Riley's for pound snooker early doors, then a club meeting at bed wreckers then straight into the golf road end, lovely stuff.

The sad remains of Boddingtons are now brewed in Preston by someone called Samlesbury or similar. The cask version continued via Hydes brewery in an inferior form until Hydes moved last year. In fairness why would Hydes produce a brand not featuring their own name to a high standard? All that remains is an inferior keg and canned version that bears no resemblance to a once great and iconic beer. A beer I cut my drinking teeth on, such a travesty.
We are however well blessed these days if partial to real beer, more around than ever and Dunham Massey ales are as good as Boddies ever was if you ask me.

So many bland, stereotypical mass produced beers; it is always a treat to find that oasis of quality now and again. Up this neck of the woods I have to rely on the odd bottled ale  :(

In your neck of the woods (do the bears actually **** there ?) you should be able to pick up an excellent bottled ale called Joker IPA, brewed by Williams of Falkirk. Usually buy it in Booth's down here.

Booth's are bad for my personal economy.......every time I get a £20 fare to Knutsford or Media City, I spend half as much again on ale !

But two precedents for 4 wins on the bounce:

Going back to that brilliant day in 91 against Barnet, the attendance that i was unoficially told was 4450. Still to this day dont know what it was actually but Moss Lane looked wonderful packed to the rafters. I was in the Golf Road and beleive me it was full. Alas times have changed and NON league football is now all too proffesional. I still believe we are the biggest NON league team and attract some of the biggest crowds for semi professional football, apart from these new fangeled AFC or FC glory hunters with no history. Long live the Alty.

65/6 must be out best overall start.  When the draw was made for the 3rd round of the FA Cup in December ( away Wolves), we were still unbeaten in ALL competitions.  I will look at where we were after 6, 8 and 10 games later.

However the sting in the tail re 62/3 (and why I missed it in looking for 5 wins on the bounce) was that we finished mid table with a woeful second half of the season

65/6 was WWWDWWWWWDDDWDW to December 11 interspersed with 6 wins and a draw in the FA Cup, a win and a draw in the Cheshire League Cup and two wins in the inaugural season of the north west floodlight league.  Our first defeat was at wolves on the 22 nd  January 1966.  That will take some beating.

Our first league defeat was at Runcorn on 5th February
