Title: Suggested squad for next season with recommended signings.
Post by: Jezza on May 02, 2007, 01:45:25 PM
GK Coburn (cover Acton)

RB Asa (cover Scotty)

CH Band Munroe (cover Rose and AN other..Mad-dog?)

LB We need one (cover Peyton Rose Scotty)

RW We need one (cover Scotty/Lawton)

Centre Mid Lawton and Eddie (cover Val Rose band)

LW Lewis (cover Peyton)

Centre forward Colin, Fearns (cover Rod Pat)

Subs; Rod, Pat, Val , Rose, Scott, Peyton

So Scotty's doing a lot next season, we're signing Eddie and Terry Fearns as well as a right winger and a left back and we're still looking a bit thin squad wise....lots for 'cote to do!

But if the 4 signings can be found I reckon that's a pretty strong side?

I've not included Joe or Bushell as i think they may be on their way...hopefully they'll stay.

I have it on pretty good authority that Joe O'neil won't be leaving.  Its not gospel of course.  He is doing a physio course round here somewhere (Salford Uni?) and so the part time bit suits him well.  He enjoys it at Alty and it must have been a boost to do so well in the player of the year awards.

Here's hoping, him and Colin would be a handful for Conference North defences

I personally think that the retain list should include the following players
Stu, Scotty, Band, Rose, Munroe, Lawton, Peyton, Val, Bush, Little, Joe, Pat, Acco,

I hope we dont sign Maddox back although he is a massive alty man in my eyes i think we might want to look at a younger centre half if we retain the other three, Nothing personal against Talbs(retiring?), Andy Scott, Tommo, Bowler but they will/should be off the wage bill maybe give us a bit of room to tempt some other players if we can, I think if he is as reports suggest Eddie should be given another chance to prove his fitness as should pottsy (remember no pre season last year which is massively im[portant for him)

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Pat McFadden. This league might be the place for him to really establish himself.

Think we need rose and munroe at CH. They could build up a great partnership next season, both of them should be comfortable in conf north, age is on their side, it'd be a good move for alty long-term (i.e. 3-5 years).

Little and O'Neill up front with Rod and Pat biting heels will be goals goals goals if you ask me! Good chance for Pat to become regular Alty player!

f**k Terry Fearns, we've got plenty without a wage bill arriving!

Peyton did a decent job this season, cant see why we wouldnt keep him at left back? A Scott for cover?

Maddox back to replace the experience lost if talbs retires.

Bush and Lawton in the middle, Chalmers left and a new lad on the right. plus another left sided player for cover.

Anyone got ideas for new wingers? Will Bowler stay without a contract and fight it out?

dont see any need for fearns i imagine hell stay with droylsden anyway.left back and wice midfielder are priority and anyone available whos better than what we already have.

History had shown thus far that Terry Fearns cannot reproduce the Goalscoring exploits of Conf North in Conf National. He's now two years older than last time he tried and I can't see this time being any different.

Wouldn't sign him for Alty though as for him to be successful we'd need to change our systems too much.

Not saying that they don't need changing just that a wholesale change would not be beneficial if we're to get a good start in BSN

the fact that payton hates playing at left back might prove an issue if we ask him to do it again for a full season

I wish everything in life was as simple as this topic. Keep the present playing squad and we'll do well. Honestly can't see anyone coming in making a difference, with the possible exception of Eddie. Val is injured quite a bit these days (not knocking him by the way) and Eddie seems an obvious inclusion. Otherwise, it should be a case of, as you were.

In all fairness you could say that about every single player in the squad as none of them are (to my knowledge) on contracts.

We still don't know of any clubs who are interested.

Coburn and Acton are two very good keepers so no probs there

Aspinal RB
Scott LB
Band CB
Munroe CB

with Rose to fill in either CB or RB, maybe prefer Rose to Munroe? Peyton cover LB

RW Lawton
CM Bushell
CM Lewis
LW Peyton

Owen play if fit/not retired
Lawton cover CM with Rod / Joe on the wing instead
No real cover LW - no surprise this is the hole GH tried to fill

Colin, Joe up front

Rod and Pat cover

Looks pretty good team and bench but not much cover beyond that.  Other than LW which is first priority I think we should be happy strengthening anywhere with first XI quality.  No point bringing in cover, it doesn't make the team any stronger.

Good to see GH has built a team loyal to the cause and full of players we are all happy to see back next year.

Post by: bighairedmike on May 02, 2007, 06:54:51 PM
to be fair i cant see peyton being on the bench as Jezza said. after this season he would have to be (injury a-side) one of the people we should have in the team week in week out. playing g.scott left abck and warren infront of him could be very productive down the left side, but g.scott isn't naturally left footed which is a slight snag. as alex said, peyton hates playing left back but he has done consistently (well) with a few exceptions when he has played in midfield. the fact that he keeps doing the job there is something to look at. maybe playing a 3-5-2 with peyton as a wing-back would be a good move? would love lewis to stay and if he does, play him on the left and warren behind him, if he doesn't a new left back/gary scott needed to go defensive. anyway rod could do a job on the right wing but i think that is the main area to look at then left back.

I didn't have Warren on the bench he was on LW.

Agree that G scott isn't a natural left footer and you're probably right the LB is our top priority.

hi my names scott tootill and i maybe gettin an invitation to train with and play for the club in july/august this year. i play defence, midfield or attck as long is it aint on the left sorry guys just cant play the left side.

Im sure we all have different styles, thoughts etc. heres mine

GK Coburn (Acton cover)

RB Scotty
LB Need one
CB Rose
CB Munroe

LW Peyton
RW Lawton
CM Chalmers
CM Bushell

FC Little
FC McFadden

still retained
Aspinal, owen, Thornley, O'Neill, Band, Hussin, Lugsden

also depends if senior returns to halifax

Really only need a LB to the squad, and maybe a CM if chalmers leaves.

Players not retained
Bowler, A. Scott, Talbot (retired?)

Jezza said it not you.  :D

GK Coburn (cover Acton)

RW We need one (cover Scotty/Lawton)

Centre Mid Lawton and Eddie (cover Val Rose band)

LW Lewis (cover Peyton)

Centre forward Colin, Fearns (cover Rod Pat)

Subs; Rod, Pat, Val , Rose, Scott, Peyton

So Scotty's doing a lot next season, we're signing Eddie and Terry Fearns as well as a right winger and a left back and we're still looking a bit thin squad wise....lots for 'cote to do!

[qoute]

One of main reasons we've slipped off the footballing map is that a fit G. Scott was sat on the bench while Aspinal played right back. If you don't agree get the Southport away DVD.

No offense to P Band but I would play rose n munroe over him every time, not sure why he's such a must have in  defense.

We desperately need to bring in some new blood. Conf North is tinpot in terms of grounds and the money generated at games compared to conf national but the standard of football will be better than we realise. Without some more pace in the midfield I think we might be in for a shock!
Title: Re: Suggested squad for next season with recommended signings.

My, this is a good thread.  ::) So we've no idea who's being released, who on earth might be available from other clubs or what the budget will be. Everyones squad is basically this seasons minus the released Thomson and Bowler, Talbs expected to reitire, maybe Andy Scott released and a bit of debate about whether Asa is still up to it and will anyone who has left us in the past couple of years come back! The only suggested signing has been Terry Fearns. Think this one is best left until the start of July.

That said...

... I think we keep roughly the squad we've got now, I think Colin and Joe would be a right handful. Joe has a burst of pace that would serve him well in BSN. We must tho, must, sign a left back (Warren so much more threatening on left mid), a decent winger (more so a right sided one I guess) and a target man. Unfortunately finances have taken a hit just as it looked like we could strengthen the team for the first time in years. On crowds of 700 next season (don't kid yourselves it'll be higher unless we are clear at the top of the league) that won't be the case and cuts may have to be made beyond just the Bowler/Thomson wages.

If I knew of any players maybe Matt Doughty of Halifax will leave in the summer, he might of come to confnat but not BSN, wingers are rarer these days, if it went tits up at Vics and we'd stayed up maybe Chris Williams, now looking at Jamie Tandy if he doesn't cut it in the national with Droylesden, decent target men I really don't know. Always like Mike Moseley at Witton but he's more in the Rod Thornley mould.

Got you all thinking there...surprised not many rose to the Terry Fearns worm on the line!

Does show what the job the 'cote has got and the dilemna of just using the square pegs of this season into the round holes rather than looking for new signings.

New signings a must are a decent right winger and an orthodox left back....Chris Adams?
I think that might be enough.

Also Robbie is not an orthodox right winger and to my mind would be the perfect dynamic force in the centre midfield with Eddie.

I think picking and choosing a team from last years squad will produce a hard team but not enough creativity or goals to get up again.

At the risk of upsetting the Rod Thornley Fan Club on this Forum, may I ask why we are so keen to retain him?

He never appears to be fully fit; rarely lasts for 90 minutes; is unavailable for several games and (as demonstrated at Tamworth and at home to Aldershot) his goalscoring touch is on the wane.

Serious thoughts, anyone?

(Stands well back in anticipation of a backlash...)

Not the player he was, but still has the quality to change a game, probably costs us sweet FA, does loads for the club off the pitch, and will no doubt be more thank ok in BS North and a very useful backup to Joe and Colin.

I have reservations about Thornley but I think the words "Nail' "Head" and "Hit" spring to mind here. I foresee him becoming some kind of super sub coming on for 30 minutes and running rings round tired BSN defences! Things looking good in the goals department for next season, midfield ok for now, just the defence that shows any real concerns for me!
Title: Re: Suggested squad for next season with recommended signings.

Rod scored 4 goals last season, last one away at St Albans, started us off against norhwich and tamworth  at home and got one of the two against FGR away.

Not a massive return but then he is never 100% fit and is in and out....why not compare that with Joe's 7 goals, again not a great return but people appreciate the other things Joe brings to the team as recognised by his POY awards.

But I put it to the cult Rod is now viewed as back up....and what value for money quality back up and how much extra he brings to the club. If Colin gets injured after 20 minutes, can the cult suggest a signing we can afford to come off the bench who would be better?

And as one player of a squad of 16 he makes up 6% of the squad  and scored 7% of our goals....(!)

In terms of our midfield I think we are mostly ok. However, I think we could really do with a proper out and out winger as we lacked width a lot of the time last season.

Why is everyone condemining poor old Warren Peyton to an apparent life sentence as a left full-back?!

We (still) need a recognised left full back at the club (Andy Scott will surely be released?) and then Peyton would be free to resume in his preferred position in midfield.

Rod has been a magnificent plus for Alty over several seasons. He has been a decent goal scorer, enthusiastic and intelligeny on the pitch and an absolute credit and assett to the club off.

I would like Rod to be a long term feature at Alty with an off field or even board role after he finishes playing.

Anyone agree?

Matt Doughty would be a good signing but can we afford him. I wouldn't want Mike Moseley. He dives too much and his miss against Frickley cost me collecting on 16-1 on Witton winning the league. I would rather have Adam Warlow who was on loan at Witton and has been released by Crewe.
