Question for the older fans.....
« on: May 25, 2008, 12:14:28 AM »

Not sure if I've been dreaming but I have a memory of a home game many moons back possibly in the NPL days, when a full coach load of Sunderland fans turned up and stood in the Golf Rd supporting us. I assume because of a postponement at City or Utd? Am I right or do I need therapy?

The Gazelle, JiminLondon, maybe Redhill Alty plus others will have been there.

I dont remember a full coach load of Sunderland fans being at an Alty match, but it is possible.
There was a faimily from Sunderland that lived at the top of top of Sandileigh Avenue right opposite the ground, called Robison, there were 6 or 8 kids. They came to Alty in the late 1960's. The three eldest lads reamained Sunderland fanatics. Derek, use to sell programmes with me outside the main stand at Moss Lane in the early 1970's. In the early 70's Sunderland were in the old second division, until they got Promotion under Bob Stokoe.  In the late 1970's the Robisons had a lot of relatives that came down for local matches. I remember quite a few of them being in the Moss Hotel one weekend. Bob Stokoe was famed for winning the FA Cup for Sunderland while they were still in the second division in 1973 - and infamous for being the Rochdale Manager when we were cheated out of a League place in 1980.

I don't remember that but I remember a game in the 70s (might have been Hartlepool in the cup but I suspect it was South Shields in the NPL) when a load of Newcastle fans came and caused some bother (or 'bovver' as we so quaintly called it at the time) . I think there were enough of them to stand wherever they wanted.

I remember a coach load of Swansea fans turning up at Merthyr in the 90's and supporting Alty due to their game getting postponed. The ground had to be segregated three ways and the Alty players clapped the Swansea fans at the end. Can't remember the exact season or the result though.
