(1) Steve King IPA:

Made with unreliable hops from the South of England, this doesn't travel well and is expensive to keep in prime condition.

However, this brew is guaranteed to go down well and leave a very bitter aftertaste.

(2) Mike Connett Stout:

Notable for its trademark huge and frothy head, this beer actually changes colours, starting in the black and then ending up in the red.

An extremely expensive vintage that is best served on yachts in a marina or as an ideal accompaniment to Italian food whilst gazing at some exotic concrete works.

(3) Jim Rushe Lager:

A gassy and tasteless concoction that has ideas above its station and ultimately fails to deliver what it initially promised it would.

Then when you take the bottle back to the brewery, they refuse to pay back your deposit.

Tends to induce severe hangovers.

Altrincham FC First Team / Mark Ward interview in The Times
« on: June 18, 2009, 04:41:32 PM »

So, has anyone on here actually read his book yet?

Has Altrincham library got a copy....?

Wrexham FC were kind enough to write to me and ask if I wanted to purchase a season ticket at the Racecourse Ground for next season, thereby boosting the 'war chest' of that guru of Non League football, Dean Saunders.

They also kindly invited me to attend their Summer Ball.

Whilst it's all very polite and flattering that they want my custom, did they not realise that when I purchased tickets for the Wrexham v Altrincham match on Easter Monday 2009, I actually ordered seats located in the away fans' section of the ground?

Altrincham FC First Team / Tranmere release Luke Waterfall

Difficult to judge him on the basis of the handful of appearances that he made for us last season.

Anyway, our priorities surely lie in recruiting players for the midfield and attacking areas.

What ineffable joy to see Leeds United fail last evening in their bid to gain promotion from League One.

To paraphrase Dr Samuel Johnson:

" When a man is tired of seeing Leeds United lose, he is tired of life."

So, that means we are still potentially just one match away from finding ourselves handed a trip to Elland Road in the FA Cup First Round.

Or perhaps we could even draw Norwich City and get Delia Smith up at Moss Lane in order to help out with cooking the chips in the new snack bar...?

Oh, and yes, it would be Alty's second appearance at Elland Road.

So, name the circumstances of our first visit there....

(N.B. Flynny, you are excluded from this question for 48 hours!).

Altrincham FC First Team / Today's Alty Trivia Question
« on: May 09, 2009, 05:11:16 PM »
Probably an easy one....but at least it's topical after last night's result:

Name the last player to score a goal for Alty against Gateshead.

Exclusive rediscovered footage from the Red Robin Club's "Search For A Star" talent show at Altrincham FC back in 1971, featuring a (relatively) young George Heslop on vocals and bass guitar.....

Altrincham FC First Team / What a difference seven years can make.....
« on: April 14, 2009, 04:34:51 PM »
13th April 2002

Unibond Premier League

Hyde United...3  Altrincham...2
Attendance: 437.

13th April 2009

Blue Square Premier League

Wrexham...0  Altrincham...1
Attendance: 2,554.

The dark experiences of those wilderness years in the Unibond only serve to make away victories like the one at Wrexham yesterday taste even sweeter.....

I've just realised that Colin Little is now the all-time top goalscorer for Alty at this level of Non League Football (i.e. league goals scored in the Alliance Premier League; Gola League; GMVC; Nationwide Conference and Blue Square Premier).

Colin's current tally is 64 goals, comprised as follows:

2005/06: 17

2006/07: 12

2007/08: 21

2008/09 (as at 10th April 2009): 14.

The previous top goalscorer was the great Graham Bennett with 62 goals, so Colin actually overtook Benno when he scored his second goal against Forest Green Rovers on 21st March 2009.

Hats off to him for this achievement....and may there be many more from him.

According to Andy Preece in the Non League Paper, Vics are waiting for international clearance so that they can sign Jamie Phoenix.....!

Altrincham FC First Team / Warren Peyton keen to join Crawley Town?
« on: March 29, 2009, 11:58:25 PM »
During last Saturday's game, I couldn't help but notice that, after undertaking a warm-up run alongside the Main Stand touchline in his role as a substitute, Warren Peyton proceeded to enter the Crawley Town dugout and was climbing the steps until one of their subs on the bench tapped him on the shoulder and pointed him in the right direction!

Perhaps he was dazzled by those blond highlights in Steve Evans's hair...?

Altrincham FC First Team / The Damned Altrincham
« on: March 28, 2009, 12:46:00 AM »
All the publicity regarding the film about Brian Clough that was released today prompted me to wonder which actors would be cast in the key roles if a movie about Altrincham FC ever transpired.

Initial thoughts:

Graham Heathcote: Michael Sheen;

Geoff Goodwin: Bob Hoskins;

John King: Ricky Tomlinson;

Dalton Steele: Wesley Snipes;

Bernard Taylor: Al Pacino;

George Heslop: Brad Pitt;

Jenny Heslop: Angelina Jolie;

Hughesy: Johnny Vegas;

Gerry Berman: Danny DeVito.

Any other suggestions....?

Last Saturday's debacle prompted a trawl through the archives to identify our heaviest defeats at Moss Lane since 1979.

So, how many of these nightmares still haunt you?

3-7

v Slough Town: 19th October 1991

(one of many low points during that abysmal season with Stan Allan as manager; local lad Steve Roberts was the hapless goalkeeper).

0-5

v Dagenham & Redbridge: 10th September 2005
v Dagenham & Redbridge: 3rd September 2006

(thank the Lord they haven't visited Moss Lane since...).

1-5

v Mossley (FA Trophy): 23rd February 1980

(yes, even the great Alty teams can get trounced! The only home defeat we experienced during the first year of the Alliance Premier League, as Leo Skeete & Co. take us to the cleaners during Alex Stepney's final appearance for Alty that particular season).

v Stafford Rangers: 30th January 1993

(the erratic Ray Dennis was our goalkeeper. Enough said).

v Stevenage Borough: 29th December 2007.

2-5

v Forest Green Rovers: 21st March 2009.

0-4

v Wycombe Wanderers: 11th April 1992

(a goalkeeping crisis meant that midfielder Nigel Shaw was forced to play as Alty's No.1).

v Macclesfield Town: 18th November 1995

(that one was especially painful; Phil Power causing havoc for McIlroy's team).

v Harrogate Town: 17th August 2002

(a disastrous start to the 2002/2003 season for Bernard Taylor's side, swiftly followed by two successive drubbings away from home).

v Woking: 10th December 2005.

v York City: 10th February 2007.

1-4

v Enfield: 15th March 1986

(revenge was sweet just a few weeks later though when we defeated them at the semi-final stage of the FA Trophy).

v Runcorn (Cheshire Senior Cup): 24th March 1988

(didn't Mark 'Spike' Carter run riot that night?).

v Witton Albion (Cheshire Senior Cup): 3rd March 1992

(that woeful Stan Allan season yet again....).

v Port Vale (FA Cup): 5th December 1992.

v Exeter City: 11th August 2007

(1-0 up, courtesy of Karl Munroe, but then we wilted in the second half).
