Yet another club in crisis.

An unpaid tax bill could see UniBond League Division One South club Spalding United wound up in court next week. And that would see the Tulips sent spiralling down the non-League ladder.

HM Revenue and Customs are taking Spalding United Football Club Ltd to court next Wednesday after losing patience over a PAYE and National Insurance debt.

The club refused to say how much it owes but said it is not "multi-thousands" and is "miniscule" compared to amounts reported to be owing by other clubs.

Tulips officials were this week desperately trying to get the hearing in London adjourned to give them longer to resolve the situation.

Chairman Chris Toynton said the debt is historic and relates to before he became chairman in 2002.

He added: "We don't want to be wound up or go into administration."

A club statement said: "Spalding United have taken prompt action by seeking professional advice in order to instruct counsel to seek an adjournment on the hearing set for June 27th.

"This being successful, it will allow them time to resolve the matter in the best interests of the club.

"Club officials are amazed and saddened by this serious news as the debt is miniscule compared to reports pertaining to other clubs."

HM Revenue and Customs cannot comment on specific cases but a spokesman said: "HMRC's attitude has always been one of 'business rescue/enabling'.

"This allows businesses who get into short-term difficulty to come to an arrangement with us, so they can trade out of their problems.

"We do, of course, need to consider the balance between supporting businesses in temporary difficulties and fairness to our more compliant customers."

Sounds like th inland rev are flexing their muscles again, if its a inherited debt from previous owners then they should be given the chance to pay it back over a period of time, instead of putting a nail in the coffin.  >:(
