Friday's 2 trivia questions
« on: December 12, 2008, 07:50:25 AM »

Simply, Who scored Alty's first goal in the Alliance Premier League?

I was looking through old programmes last night and was surprised.  If you'd have asked me this question, I would haev got it wrong.

And I note from "through the years" that Saturday will be the 39th anniversary of our first ever FA Trophy game, a 1-1 draw at Moss Lane with Buxton.  We lost the replay 3-2.  Until only a few weeks before the start of the competition it was refered to as the "FA Non League Cup", the name Trophy arriving late in the day.

So my second question is (and I don't know the answer to this one!): Who scored Alty's first ever FA Trophy goal?

Bill,

Good to see you spending a Thursday evening profitably....

The great Mal Bailey scored Alty's first ever goal in the APL in a 2-0 win over Telford United at Moss Lane.

I think it was a second half header.....?
Did he have that infamous perm at that juncture?!

Alty's FA Trophy debut is before my time as a Moss Lane regular.....but I'll delve into the archives and get back to you on that one.

It was a second half header - 56 minutes. We went 2-0 up on 64 mis through John Davison who was our leading scorer after 5 matches!

I'd forgotten we'd had a run of 4 league matches without a win that season after the triumph over Weymouuth at Moss Lane - but as it was only 2 points for a win and we managed to draw 3 of the 4 it wasn't so bad.

Bill,

As promised...from the Altrincham Guardian report stored away in my archives:

13th December 1969
FA Trophy Third Qualifying Round

Altrincham...1
Buxton...1
Attendance: 1,518.

Alty's first ever FA Trophy goal was scored by Mick Walker (would anyone have remembered him?) in the 7th minute.

Parkes equalised for Buxton in the 39th minute following an error by Willie Mailey.

Jack Swindells missed a 15th minute penalty.

Never heard of him - but I have the excuse that I never saw any match in 1969-70, having left to live in New Zealand for 3 years in March 69.

Oh, and therefore it's 38 years to the day since our first Trophy match.
