Altrincham FC First Team / Re: Two more signings
« on: May 22, 2017, 09:36:09 PM »
I saw Gap Connah's Quay early last season with both Short and Disney playing (and Wes Baynes captaining the team). They won 1-0, which was a very typical score last season, when they did well, but were dull to watch with their strength all based on defence .
Given that strong defence, I suggest their loss is our gain, so welcome to the club!

Rhyl away will be a tough test I think, arent they still full time?

No, I don't think they ever have been. In fact, they were relegated from the Welsh Premier to the Cymru Alliance last season, even though they were one of the "big" clubs (sound familiar?)  with a ground fit to host European football.

Welcome to the club. I seem to recall John Johnston playing very well for Leek against us.
Very well ? He ripped us a new one that day !

I was being restrained! He also had a good game at Salford against us, although I am trying to erase last season from the memory.

Altrincham FC First Team / Worcester City drop to Midland League
« on: May 12, 2017, 01:19:48 PM »
No direct relevance to us, but, as has been rumoured for a while, Worcester City have taken a voluntary relegation to Step 5 Midland League Premier. I think this means Harrow Borough get a reprieve to stay at Step 3 as reprieves are decided over the step as a whole once the season has finished.

As has been said if clee was contracted we could and should have got a fee. So I suspected he wasnt on contract.

As for him being injury prone, im sure someone could add up the minutes he was injured during his 3 club season.

The statement on the official website states that he "asked to be released from his contract"  which was "due to run until the end of next season".

Still,  it must encourage new players to join. If you get injured, you, quite rightly, continue to get paid, but, if you want to leave, you can,  and just get some disapproving remarks. As said, keeping a player who wants to leave is pretty pointless, but could not a complaint be made against the club which approached a contracted player?

Agreed. Although he wasn't great last season,  he has been outstanding in previous years, so I am glad to see that he is still around.

Phil Parkinson taking us back to one of his old clubs. As they are only one division lower, it looks like a decent test.

I have seen our reserves play at Clough Hall for a Mid-Cheshire League game in 1990 or so. That was against Kidsgrove's first team then, which reminds me how times have changed...

That's right.  Although legendary status is sometimes gained too easily nowadays, being the second (or even possibly the third) highest goalscorer of all time for the  club must qualify as a genuine legend.
Also, at 31, which is the age Colin Little was when he first joined us, there can be plenty more goals in a player who has tended to remain free from injury, so all the best for the future!

Not exactly the greatest surprise, but welcome to the club.

Good results tonight to be fair.

We keep Nantwich as a local day out and Witton now one game away from joining us. Spennymoor to do Stourbridge please on the weekend and that'll do me.

Had no idea that Spennymoor were big spenders this year (until just told).

My only memory of Spennymoor away was there being more people in the social club than at the match the last time I went as I think Newcastle were on the dodgy satellite.

Did we beat them 4-0 that year? That was Spennymoor United who folded mid-season a few years later, and then Evenwood Town of the Northern League moved into the vacant ground and steadily rose up through the leagues, seemingly with some money behind them, after changing their name to SpennymoorTown.

Altrincham FC First Team / Re: New Manager for next season
« on: April 24, 2017, 10:30:05 PM »
I would hazzard guess its Gary Jones and Densmore

As Gary Jones was brought in as a player and appointed as a coach by Matt Doughty, he might feel that it would not be appropriate to run the team on Saturday in the circumstances. However, playoff results may mean that a new permanent manager becomes available earlier than expected.

Hmm, it wasn't great today but as far as the actual state of the teams go, 2nd place side plays relegated bottom side, so it was about par with what I expected.

The difference between two relegated clubs and how desperate they are to regain that status and the way they set themselves up how to do so however...

Very telling.

Yes, very telling. Around January 2016 or so, Kidderminster accepted they were going down and began planning for the new season, and a swift return, as a priority.

That wasn't appropriate for us last season, as we weren't doomed, but it was this year. At least Harry Cain got a run out (and I can appreciate it's better for him to be getting games in for Prescot Cables in their successful fight against relegation rather than warming our bench) alongside yet another good performance by Laurence Taylor.

Altrincham FC First Team / Re: Original Vics
« on: April 17, 2017, 09:15:31 PM »
The last I heard, the original Vics are being evicted from Wincham Park and may have a short term arrangement, which may not satisfy the NWCL, to play at Townfield, Barnton. That's if they don't fold completely.

Surprising though it may seem, unless  anyone has any more recent information, they actually do seem to be in a worse position than us.

my favourite bit was:

After the game, a few fans chanted for the Warrington-born manager to ‘stay’. But it’s unlikely at this stage. Although the pressure on Rowley has stabilised, with the RowleyOut campaign coming to a halt, the contempt is still there, bubbling away under the surface, and potentially prompting him into another rash, dangerous call – to be rid of Doughty

Who the f**k chanted for Doughty to stay?

Also I thought the RowleyOut campaign was merely on hold until/if Rowley stands down at the May board meeting?

I didn't hear any chants for Doughty to stay, but, then, I was following Clayton McDonald  out of the ground straight after the end of the game.

As Malty G says, you might think there is a deliberate campaign to make Doughty look good, irrespective of the club's interests.
