I can remember us having a good team when we had grass banks, and beating Stafford Rangers, too.
I appreciate your point, though.

Strange indeed. While we dominated possession in the first, we never had any real end product, and there is little point in pretending otherwise.

There is also a worry of a rift developing between players and supporters if the latter are not thanked for some outstanding support in the first half, but get blamed for showing their unhappiness at the end.

Who knows, but possibly a 3-1win, and I certainly wouldn't begrudge Kyle Perry a consolation goal.

Attendance 838, with a good 100 or so from Stafford, and more watching the Sunday game at Stourbridge.

Thankfully the League Cup is not a group competition like it used to be. When we had a Presidents Cup and a Chairmans Cup for those teams who finished 2nd and 3rd in their groups.

That was so odd, it was harder to get out of than Going for Gold!

I'm sure I went to Ossett for a game in that?  One of the Ossetts?

We definitely played at Ossett Town, who are the ones who play in the town centre, by the bus station.

This competition has certainly had some funny formats, when, even if you lost, you were placed in another competition. I don't think there's anything like that now, but wouldn't like to say for sure...

Weren't Ashton United the opponents in our most recent league cup game of any sort when ExGk made a playing comeback at Hurst Cross, before the Bob Lord Trophy (the competition, not the silverware) was scrapped?
I think it was called the Setanta Shield when we lost 6-2 at Ashton. The following season we lost at home to Wrexham after extra time before they finally binned the competition.

Thanks to you and Roytonmike for reminding me. Obviously, it was a pretty forgettable competition, but that game at Ashton does stick in the mind!

Incidentally, I see from the main site that, if the scores are level, it goes immediately to penalties without extra time. A few competitions seem to be doing that nowadays, and I certainly welcome it for a stalemated league cup tie when your heart sinks at the thought of 30 more minutes.

Sandbatch United have fans?
are they all ramblers ?
oh i see i was a bit behind on my reference to the erstwhile ramblers .
talking of teams in that locale are middlewich still a minor force in south cheshire . i recall a very funny day out there which i assume was a senior cup game on a saturday.
I think that was January 1977....FA Cup 3rd Round Day....my recollection is of a 2-0 win.
7th January 1978 - it was indeed Middlewich Athletic 0 Alty 2; scorers Johnson & Rogers; Middlewich goalkeeper was I believe one Willie Mailey (see earlier in this discussion!)

My first ever away game. Dave Carrick, I think, was another ex-Altrincham player playing for Middlewich Athletic that day.

Middlewich Athletic also folded, but, unlike Sandbach, the new club continue to play on the same ground, Seddon Street. They are now called Middlewich Town and play in the Cheshire League Div 1,  one division below our reserves.

Anyone know if Sandbach Utd have any links with Sandbach Ramblers? Went there in the early 70s with my dad. Funny feeling we may even have lost to them but not sure.

They are a separate club playing at a different ground on the outskirts of Sandbach. I think the reformed club, mentioned by Mike, had a limited connection to the original club. When our game at Darlington was off in Febtuary, I saw thrm beat Charnock Richard 3-1 in front of 102 spectators. The match was refereed by the chairman of the Cheshire League who accepted no dissent whatsoever and Sandbach's win was largely due to the fact they had cottoned on to this (unlike Charnock) although former Alty reserve Boris Melingui had an excellent game after coming on as sub, also scoring a goal.

Surprisingly, the ground didn't have a proper stand then,  just a couple of tiny covers behind the goal, although I believe they have put one up since, as this was their first season in the NWCL. There were loads of pitches outside the main ground,  though, and I think they are one of the biggest clubs in the country in terms of the number of players they have in all their junior sides.

I can also remember us playing the original Sandbach Ramblers in a Cheshire Senior Cup game on a Saturday in 1975. For some reason, the game didn't start until 3.30, but that 30 minute delay felt like an eternity to a 10 year old!

And, from another pedant, Stafford have actually played below this level in recent seasons, which may be a cautionary tale in itself. From 2014-16, they were in the Evo-Stik NPL Div 1 South, and they also had a spell from 1996-2000 below the Southern Premier, after a double relegation.

It was before my time, but I thought Skelmersdale weren't eligible for the NPL as an amateur club, back when there was a distinction between professional and amateur status.

I am very sorry for your loss. You can see how highly thought of he was, which I hope is some comfort, at least. RIP, Dave.

And he will be playing alongside former Alty greats Andy Owens and Steven Gillespie. That seems to underline your point somehow....

Was it said at the meeting that 12 were contracted?

It was. I think Hulme may be an additional contracted player, but that's speculation.  Also, I thought some of the departed players would have been contracted.

Looks like Ramsbottom have announced this officially.  Like everyone else, I am bemused by this.
