Altrincham FC First Team / Re: Mickleover- Match Thread
« on: November 30, 2017, 11:59:28 PM »

Let's be honest, when the league fixtures were released back in July, this game was the first one that we eagerly scanned the list for....

Haha, the excitement palpable amongst London Alty Cult. I’m looking forward to a good day on the ales round one of the more underrated UK circuits. I’m especially looking forward to bumping into any Burton fans (away at Derby in their dream local derby on Saturday) and them asking us what league we play in these days, oh dear. The Don Amott Arena looks quite the venue too, appears to only have 3 sides. It’s games like this we just have to keep on grinding out and hoping next season it’s back to normal away days at Stockport, York etc. The first XI have had a week off and did the business up the road against far tougher opppsotin last Saturday so sure it’ll be another 3 points on Saturday. Shaw Lane vs Warrington on Saturday too so all the more important we get the win.

Having been to the Don Amott Arena before, I can confirm it does have an open side, shared with the cricket ground, and also that there are some very good pubs in Derby, although the ones near the station and therefore Pride Park may be packed out. Mickleover have come a long way in the last future years, but have lost more than they have won at home, so we should reasonably hope to win, without being arrogant about it.

Don Amott, who is the club chairman (and gives his name to the ground, which I hope gives nobody else any ideas),  is the "king of caravans" and has been responsible for some top quality TV adverts back in the day.

Altrincham FC First Team / Re: Unbeaten run
« on: November 27, 2017, 10:30:26 PM »
We went 28 unbeaten in 90/91
That 28 was league games only to be pedantic. There was an FA Cup defeat to Huddersfield and the FAT SF defeats to Wycombe amidst that 28 games (presumably also defeats in the Bob Lord Trophy and Cheshire Senior Cup somewhere too as we won neither that season). Not to knock what is rightly lauded as one of the clubs finest ever seasons. To be fair the current crop are looking like they could establish a few modern day records.
Just to flesh out the bones a bit on this - we'd gone out of the BLT to Barrow before the run started; from Oct 6th 1990 to April 24th 1991 we were unbeaten in League games (from a 2-2 home draw with Yeovil to a 0-1 defeat at Barrow, which was our third game in five days); the only games lost over that period were 1-2 v Huddersfield (h - FA Cup 1st Rd (Nov 18th 1990)), 0-2 at Macc (CSC semi-final 2nd leg, March 11th 1991), & 1-2 (a) & 0-2 (h) v Wycombe in the Trophy semi (April 6th & 13th 1991). From Oct 6th 1990 to March 11th 1991 we were unbeaten by any other non-League club. That's one hell of a series of targets for the present squad!

Good times, but while we are encouraging the team to emulate those feats, best not to mention the implosion at the end of that season!

He had more to do than in most recent matches yesterday, and made one absolutely outstanding save, along with some other very good ones. There is also a particular skill in being able to concentrate and apply yourself to pull off a save when you have had nothing to do all game, as we have seen in other matches.

In contrast, I saw that Lancaster beat Mildenhall 1-0 yesterday with one shot on target, in the 90th minute.

When is the draw?

In the last round, it was 12.30 on the Monday, but the exact time seems to vary a bit from round to round!

Steve's original point is correct as the coverage was very poor, although it can hardly be southern bias as Bognor Regis Town and Eastbourne Borough, for example, received a similar lack of coverage and they are both in a higher division than us, don't forget.

I suppose they could interview our chairman about that....

Altrincham FC First Team / Reserves game on Friday Dec 1st
« on: November 23, 2017, 12:40:51 PM »
The reserves have a rearranged fixtures at home (i.e. Moss Lane) that night against Eagle Sports, from Warrington.
I guess this gives the management a chance to see the players coming back from injury, and others pushing towards the first team squad, in a proper match.

Altrincham FC First Team / Re: Shaw Lane lose manager to Boston
« on: November 21, 2017, 11:43:42 PM »
The new Shaw Lane manager is Paul Quinn, who was previously the Brighouse Town manager before leaving in the summer (I think). They  have had a similar rapid rise through the leagues to Shaw Lane, although not quite as meteoric.

He is the son of Gerry Quinn, who of course managed us 25 years ago; apologies if that makes anyone feel old.

Should they be underwhelmed with this appointment ? ......or is it just me

It's a slightly odd one, but may be inspired. He is still in his early thirties, but, in his six seasons at Brighouse, they never went backwards, finishing 4th, 2nd and 1st in the Northern Counties East League Premier, and then 15th, 15th and 9th in the NPL Div 1 North.

On the other hand, he has never managed at this level, and, also, got sent off from the dugout on the one occasion I have been to Brighouse so there may be a doubt as to his temperament.

It is a bit as if we had taken a chance and appointed Phil Parkinson in 2016, not that I am aware of him applying then. Even though he had never managed in the National League North, I think we would probably have ended up with a better season

Altrincham FC First Team / Re: Merthyr murdered
« on: November 21, 2017, 09:36:59 PM »
The chairman resigned yesterday along with the club treasurer.

However, the daft thing is that if the club can manage to field a scratch side for all games this season, they could be okay to stay up, if they can restructure at all in the close season. Merthyr already have 26 points, the bottom two (Dunstable Town and Gosport Borough) have got just 6 and 4 respectively, and it's only one down this season.

... who play at Winsford.
If they play at winsford then we will have to rearrange as they are at home on the same day
The games are supposed to take place in the week ending Jan 13th. One could play Tuesday & the other Wednesday, or one pair of clubs might agree to play the following week.

Winsford's usual home midweek night is Monday, so that should sort itself out.

Thompson
Bembo-Leta, Harrison, Hannigan, Short
Richman, Moult
Hancock, Poole, Johnston
Hulme

Picks itself if I'm honest

Spot on

Absolutely this team.

Tough for Hancock as he's more effective left than right - but JJ  <3

Yes, that's the best current team, which is also very tough on the likes of Peers who would have walked into last season's team.

Altrincham FC First Team / Re: Motley-Henry

I started a thread on this recently.

I remember him coming on late at Welling (dreadful game) and I was at a loss to explain why his pace wasn't being used to stretch games.

Instead we preferred to play a 4-4-1-1 with Ginnelly on the left and someone out of position (either O'Keefe or Richman) on the right - all so we could accommodate Lawrie in his 'best position' behind the striker. We got steamrollered wvery week.

I don't know if Hednesford have worked out Lawrie's best position yet....it can't be very effective to judge from their Trophy exit tonight at Cleethorpes.

Lawrie did start tonight, when Hednesford apparently had an injury crisis, but he has been on the subs' bench for the last few matches. That doesn't rule out your point, though, quite the contrary.

As for Dylan Mottley-Henry, I think it is as simple as that he is a couple of years older now than when he played for us, and the rest of his game has improved to match his undoubted pace. He is having a superb loan spell at Tranmere.

Very sad news. Mal was one of the first players I got to recognise as individuals rather than "players" when I was growing up, and was a key member of our best ever side.

Yes, it is not exciting, but, even though they are in a higher league, they are in the bottom half, and probably more worried about us.
I think the only ex-player there is Luis Morrison, but he has only been an unused sub so far this season.
