I only found out recently that in late 70's and early 80's the anglo-italian cup was for semi-pro teams.

As it was during our 'golden era' or thereabouts I was wondering why we never played in it, if indeed we didnt. I see Wimbledon did, and Sutton United won it.

Were we ever supposed to be part of this?

I have a feeling Northwich may have taken part in it, but I don't know about us.

I've no idea whether Alty were ever even approached to participate in this particular competition.

However, Northwich definitely played in the 1977 Anglo-Italian Cup.

I recollect reading that one of the matches at The Drill Field descended into full-blown combat and a flurry of sendings off.

In one of the ensuing fixtures in Italy, a certain John King Esq. was reportedly the target of some 'robust' tackling by the home side, which, I believe, resulted in him suffering a broken leg.

Anyhow, here are the statistics:

Cheers cult.

To think Matlock Town have beaten Cremonese in a competitive fixture is bizarre to say the least.
