Epic performance. This was the red card by the way...

Please don't rush to judgement solely on the basis of that particular clip though, as it only comprises the first instalment of the ongoing incident which resulted in Linney being sent off.

From my seat in the main stand, I happened to catch a good view of the whole altercation.

Following Linney's initial barge of the Dorking defender, I kept my eye focused on the two players, as verbals were being exchanged and you just sensed that a sequel was impending.

Alas, Linney proceeded (both senselessly and naively) to run back towards the Dorking player, raise his right arm and then barge into him across the upper chest with a trifle more force. Inevitably, the Dorking defender cynically capitalised on this impetuous deed by promptly holding his face and collapsing onto the turf.

I doubt that the referee witnessed the incident, so I would suspect that the red card was issued on the advice of his assistant (who was in front of the sponsors lounge at the time). Harsh, to my mind, but Linney needs to learn that such indisciplined behaviour almost cost us dear on the night and will now almost certainly result in him being unnecessarily absent for three matches at a vital stage of the season.

All I will add is that it was a pity that the same linesman wasn't quite so eagle-eyed when it came to spotting a Dorking player's assault on Marriott in the aftermath of our opening goal.

As for the game itself, that second half resembled Rorke's Drift in Zulu, only with Lewis Baines instead of Michael Caine.

Potentially a pivotal victory, both in terms of the ultimate league position and the team's morale in the wake of five consecutive defeats.

Love reading your eloquent summaries Barry… Long May your pen flourish Sir.

I thought Dorking were a niggly team who were more interested in roughing up our lads than scoring. I won’t be sorry to see them get relegated and it would be great if we were to confirm their demise in April, I am thinking of going to that game in Surrey.

I'd imagine Dorking will have most of the ball which might play into our hands a little bit as we're now much more a counter attacking side. Outcome depends on the old cliches of how we defend under pressure and if we can take the chances we get as I'm confident they'll come.

Dorking have a few defenders who are getting on a bit. Maybe it could find them out on a proper pitch which will be soft (in racing terms) and only a few days since there last game.. having said that, our lads need to up their game also.

We are not quite there yet as a team for Div 2. I would like to see at least 5 more good players added to the squad for next year plus some of the current squad do need to be moved on. This season has not been a disaster by a long chalk. Yes the learning curve has got steeper of late but perhaps that will turn out to be no bad thing in the bigger picture going forward. Yes we need another considerable injection of cash but as a progressive club that isn’t beyond the realms of possibilities.

I will be there on Tues night and I am sure the rest of the Alty fans will also be there also to give the lads’ support.

I think Maxi is still on loan but United have him back when they want him

The squad isn’t big or good enough for playoffs or Lge football. What needs to happen is to get a bigger squad going forward, not loanees, squad players have to be capable of stepping up into the first team not be on the bench making up the numbers.

If I am honest I always have been of the opinion that this season is a little to early to be dreaming of getting into Lge two.

Predicting this fixture is indeed a quandary. We need an outcome other than null points.

SW I’m sorry to say it is Amateurish and rude, it is part of the club that really does need improvement.
Hope you do eventually get a response

If the idea of sending Donowa to Chorley is to get him match fit, bringing him on as an 83rd minute substitute at Brackley this evening seems to make it a fruitless exercise.

I think I could have managed to play for 7 minutes (as long as they didn’t play too much added time)

I watched the Stream tonight and it was identical to the Maidenhead game..

Fortunately Solihull, Gateshead and Barnet also lost tonight. It’s quite simple now. We have to win games now and go on an unbeaten run akin to the one we did at the beginning of the season. I agree that loans are required. I did read somewhere that Ethan could be back for next Tuesday..

I think Parky gets too engrossed in players stats facts and figures. Lots of players manage two games a week. They are fit young lads not Sunday pub teams who get rat arsed the night before a game.

Finally ……
WE NEED A PLAN B when things aren’t working

Hopefully, we will see a selection picked of the like of when we last won against Rochdale. Let’s get back to our sharp passing game moving the ball quicker than of late…

Southend 1 - Alty 2.

Con Clarke & Linney.

Sadly, an RIP.
Still remember him from the CSC final vs Witton when, as a youngster, he was part of strolling Ken Barnes's side along with (Peter?) Mellor.

Yep Peter Mellor he was a big man with shocking white hair, a very good keeper.. who went on to play for Fulham.

RIP Chris Nichols.
