Title: Nominations for the most spine tingling Alty moment.
Post by: Ballers on October 07, 2008, 01:39:57 PM
I'll put a poll up later but just for now some brief suggestions for the most magical Alty moment you personally remember. It's hard with so many memories and I'm sure more will come intime that you can add on here but what has been your most spine/tingling magical Alty moment.

It doesn't necessarily have to be the most famous. for example, despite having seeen us beat Birmingham and win at Wembley amongst others the best I have ever felt at an Alty  game was when Ken McKenna scored a winner against Kettering in January 1991, an epic game having thrown away a 2 goal lead as we had a week or so earlier v Colchester United (that reminds me). When Kenny rounded the keeper to make it 3-2 it was special, I can never remember the ground feeling quite like that, it had been at the Leek game that I realised we had something special going on but that was THE moment.

I agree with your view that it's not always the big games that are the most spine tingling but special mention must go to John Hughes firing us ahead at Goodison Park.  And to Jeff's equaliser at White Hart Lane.

The 5-4 against Mossley was special.

The first two games at Weymouth - both 0-0 - in the Trophy and the inaugural game in the APL were magic.

And more recently during the Conference North season when I suddenly realised that we had an attacking team capable of playing attractive football - it might even have been at the 2-1 defeat at Hinckley.

Perhaps not the greatest or most famous night in Alty history, but the cup reply win at Lancaster did it for me. The manner of the win coming from a goal down, the manner in which Lancaster fell apart, Lee Poland's hatrick and going in the wrong end by mistake and being the only person that end celebrating his wonder goal.

Clive Freeman against Chester for me, i didnt know non league players could strike a ball that well and that hard from that distance,

a wonderful feeling as it gradually gained height and then crashed into the bar and dug into the mud at the back of the goal in front of me, unforgetable

Barry Howard's goal at Rotherham - a mazy run and a great finish from the edge of the box.

But apart from goals, watching Alty walk out onto the Anfield pitch alongside the likes of Dalglish was pretty spine tingling

The final whistle at the end of the Birmingham game and then watching the Birmingham fans (after booing their own team off) turn to applaud the Alty players and fans.

...and playing in a supporters match against the FA trophy winning side and getting booted three foot into the air by Kingy - it wasn't just my spine that was tingling when I hit the floor!

no big surprise for those that know me, its rotherham the second time
rotherham 0-5 was one of my first games so to go back there and destroy them 3 years later was brilliant. the best moment for me though was stepneys penalty save at 2-0. the chanting of his name straight after was the loudest i have ever heard alty sing and was spine tingling in the extreme

its a thing about penalty saves isnt it? you go from right down to right up in a second and it can really affect the missing team

Shaun Constable's goal against Spurs. Quickly followed by utter dismay as it was chalked off for threesomes foul throw.

When we scored two quick goals against nunny in the cup a few years back at Moss Lane. I was still celebrating 2-1 when we bagged the third, just turned round in time to see it go in, think it was Thornley, although it could have been Hulme. I can never remember the order.

Mine was stood in a pub in Tottenham singing were simply the best by Tina Turner which (if i remember correctly) Jimmy put on and we changed the words to incorparate Alty.

At the end of the song a Tottenham fan informed us that if we had been any team but Alty we would all be lying in a pool of our own blood and wished us luck :)

OCG it was Andy Reid's  alleged foulthrow.

You're right about that Spurs pub though Wayne, I think as it actually turns out it is one of the main Spurs lads pubs on the infamous Broadwater Farm estate. They were utterly amazed/bemused at us having the bollocks/naivety to even step foot in there, no away fans had dared set foot in there for years.

Luckily us singing "Cantona eats garlic, Giggs is f***ing queer, we are Alty FC, we're only after beer!" was soemthing they found hilarious and confirmed that we weren't a load of United fans, so we got away with it. Close stuff though.

I was in that pub that day, had gone down on my own, was working away, saw a load of Alty fans going into a boozer, thought OK must be alright, went through the door and you could cut the atmos with a machette, but as Wayno says alls well.
I also remember exiting Maineroad after the Spurs replay, straight into the Spurs fans, i was wearing a bobby hat me mum had knitted and a red and white scarf, they thought i was a Man U fan, when i explained that i was actually from Alty i was hoisted up onto there shoulders and cheered, christ i thought i was off to North London. !st time i realised adrenaline was Brown and Smelly.

For me,as a kid, John Hughes goal at Goodison. I was absolutely amazed, my dad had prepared me for a 7 or 8 nil drubbing and we went ahead. I was devestated when they equalised, never a pen. Remember leaving that huge stand and Liverpool fans turning up outside to gloat. The day I became Alty for life if I hadn't already become so.

Yes Freeman's goal for me, still rings in my ears when I got home and watched it on MOTD...

"Freeman!! That's what he can do, kisses the shirt" Or something like that.

The Spurs trip was also special, I also remember going to the pubs before the match and starting to get worried when the lads were chanting, I thought we may be in for some bother but as you say the Tottenham fans seemed to respect us for even stepping foot in the place.

Anytime we beat Vics or Witton always did it for me, even the CSC ties which always seemed to go into extra time? Happy Days :D

That Southport game like others was very spine tingling but not for the obvious reasons . Standing next to the Gazelle I started a chant of 'Come and have a go if you think you're hard enough' - They did come and have a go and they were hard enough. Guess who was first out of the ground with tingling spine in tow?  I left the Gazelle standing as I made my exit. Surprisingly I found him alive and well a few days later.

That was it, anyone uploaded it to youtube yet, had a quick look and can't find it? I did have it on video but I think my mum recorded over it with Eldorado or something similar from the day ::)I was on TV as well as they all came over to the stand side far corner from memory to celebrate.

I also spotted myself on TV for the Spurs game when the goal was disallowed. I was sat next to a nice couple (probably someone on here I suspect) and remember seeing myself on tv nudging the guy next to me and pointing to that dispstick of a linesman >:( Probably got recorded over with Lovejoy that one ::)

The problem is, is that it is so hard just to name one moment, i've just sat here for a good 10 minutes trying to think of that one spine tingling moment and the best i can do is narrow it down to about 6.

In no particular order...

1) The 1995 tottenham game, the whole day was fantastic, milling around outside the ground, all the balloons that met the team as they ran iut, shaun constable's goal (while it lasted).

2) The very late winner against hyde in 1998/99 (10th minute of injury time?). The momment where for me, the championship was really really on.

3) Bamber Bridge away in that same season, it seemes we had loads there that day, players and fans celebrating like the world cup had just been won when the goal went in. Anyone remember that steward at Bamber Bridge who hated it when alty turned up, he looked like a James Bond bad gut with the bad tache.

4) he Kettering Play off semi final, the own gaol which won it for us seemed like slow motion. The players running through walls for each other. Think we all new that the final was a formality at that stage. Quality stuff.

5) The Northwich 3-0 form the other year when Robbie Lawtons goal went in it was sheer bliss. It made all the sh*t that we had endured during the Unibond Years seem worth it.

6) The FA Cup 1st round at home to Southport in 1994/95. Think Paul France got the late winner. Rememver as a 12 year old going mad for that.

I could go on but they're the ones that really stand out. And to think that my 1st game in 1992 was a 1-0 home defeat to merthyr,i should really have had the sense not to come back, but then look what i'd have missed.

A few others, were Lawton's goal in the 3-0 win over Northwich.

Sharratt's goal against Wigan.

Senior's goal against Millwall.

Lovelock's gaol against Emley.

The final whistle at Stoke.

When I though Constable had scored at Spurs.

Ah yess! What a night! Dean Pritchard's finest moment if my worlds worst memory serves me correctly.

I dont know how much of this is true, or folklore. I heard that sammy macc scum, or whoever wanted the game on even though the pitch was awful because he thought they'd pan alty anyway and wanted the fixture out of the way. At the final whistle he was heard bemoaning the ref for not calling it off.

Things like that consolidate why I love Alty, hate Macc and will never feel inferior when one of their farmhand fans is bangin on about being the bloody football league???

A good call that Gaz. I recall how emotional it was as that song echoed around the ground at Weymouth on the last day of the season. As the players emerged from the tunnel I can remember the look of shock on their faces to see how many of us there were and how loud we sang - a great and very proud moment.

Obviously being too young to have all the 'glory days' memories, for me there are two moments that really stand out.  The play off matches in the Conference North.  At Nuneaton, I remember hiding behind the ad boards during the penalty shoot out cos I was so nervous.  Peeping over the top it was so tense and then so amazing seeing Stu saving a couple and then Eddie's celebrations when he scored.
And then at Kettering with the own goal in extra time.  I agree with what has already been said that it seemed to go in slow motion.  And the celebrations at the end were fantastic, with the excitement of knowing we were going to Stoke.
Although those two matches were leading up to the big one at Stoke I think it was definitely those two wins that were the most spine-tingling moments.

As an exile I don't see many games but recently Senior vs Millwall and "We're here and we're from Altrincham" at Weymouth.

agree with both the whole of weymouth knew that there had been a mini invasion from the north we made ourselves and the club proud that day shame about the result

Mossley 5-4.

4-1 down looking hopeless, small crowd.  Mid week .  4-4 was amazing.  But 5-4? The crowd went bananas, hugging each other and jumping up and down, like they were standing on the fires of hell,  and I 'd say the noise could be heard over the hills of Ashton-Under-Lyne!

5,runcorn away trophy semi final fear factor scarier than spurs.
        4,kettering ken mckenna fantastic atmosphere.
        3,wembley finals enough said.
2,mossley 4-5 motorbiked from crewe soaked through,4-1 down jr carried off, dead and burried astonishing result.
1 weymouth away last season. seen all the glory years from the mid 70s on but on that day ALTY PRIDE etched itself on my memory, fantastic singing and support.

I've just gone downstairs and watched the goal on video cos I thought Ecky had made a mistake with the commentary for old times sake but is there ANY Alty fan out there who didn't get his mush on tv that night particularly after the goal, straight off I can think off Joe, Gaz Morris, big Ross, my mate Al, the Gazelle, Ray Armstrong, ATS, Malcolm, Margaret, Mr Brocklehurst jr, the other chap whose name I don't who stands with that crowd, Gavin Torpey....

I was on it shaking hands with Clive Freeman during the pitch invasion!  :)
