Extremely odd to make an overall judgement on Brad Jackson based on his appearances as an emergency full back (where I personally think he’s done ok). He’s played all of ten minutes for us in his natural position and was absolutely superb.

On a side note, I'm glad to see that they've finally sorted step 4 out for this season, allowing teams to progress from the Northern League on a regular basis. The ones which have come up such as Marske mostly seem to be doing quite well and getting fairly decent crowds  - and on Saturday, Ashington (who I was slightly surprised to read used to be in the same league as us) got a bigger crowd than any team in the league above, and you've got Spennymoor Town now getting more than Darlington!. Hopefully this will strengthen the non-league game in the North of England going forward and allow more Northern League clubs to progress through to the National League in the future. Worth remembering Morpeth, who we played a few years ago, got the 4th biggest crowds in the NPL in 2019-20.

First year of the NPL! I was on that coach trip to Ashington. Happy days!
Took a while for the coach to find the ground. The overall impression of the place was that it was an absolute dump but still glorying in being the birthplace of the Charlton brothers.
It must have improved a heck of a lot since then, surely.
PS. It was over 50 years ago (1968, I think?) so they've had plenty of time to improve. 😉🤣🤣

Our most Northerly competitive fixture ever, I think I'm right in saying.

Altrincham FC First Team / Re: Grimsby Match Thread
« on: October 06, 2021, 09:06:15 AM »
I wonder if an underlying issue here is that there's a mismatch between the official capacity of the away end (1434 - or is it even more after the recent changes?) and how many people we can practically and safely accommodate on it? Could the 1250 Grimsby fans last night have actually fitted into the Chequers End? It's good for the club to have as big a stadium capacity as possible but a more realistic figure for the away end might make people more understanding of the decision to give away fans part of the pop side in exceptional circumstances.

Jackson has completed his suspension so should be available.

Isn’t Gould carrying an injury he picked up in pre-season?

He said he was fit when he did the RR commentary at Torquay and I assume he still is. PP rarely picks a keeper on the bench.

They are good value tickets,  but, as Mrs Warbouys has said,  they are only on the slower train from Crewe.

I was going to add, though, that you will be okay travelling from Harrow-on-the-Hill on the day, but, unfortunately there is work on the line, so there are no services between central London and Harrow on the Metropolitan Line on Saturday. You can still get to Ruislip on the Piccadilly Line or you could use the Central Line to Ruislip Gardens, which is  a bit further away from Wealdstone's ground, but is a faster trip from London.

They would mean changing at Leicester Square or Oxford Circus respectively from Euston, not Euston Square.  I hope I have got this right, and am open to corrections....

You have got it correct and I am grateful to you for spotting what I had missed. Getting from Harrow on the Hill to London Euston in time for our train at 10.00 am on Sunday is proving more difficult then I might of imagined.

If you're on one of the slower trains from Euston to Crewe, it may well stop at Harrow & Wealdstone and/or Watford Junction, in which case you might be better off getting a bus or cab to one of those rather than schlepping all the way into Euston.

I have registered and bought a ticket. I have also managed to get hold of 3 x 1st Class return tickets from Crewe to London Euston for a total of £87.85 so I am going down on Friday evening and coming back on Sunday.  I am going to the game but 'er indoors' and my daughter are already in tourist mode and I suspect that this is going to cost me dearly. I have booked accommodation in Harrow-on-the-Hill,  just a few stops on the metropolitan line to Ruislip Station which it is only a 10 minute walk to the ground.

For anyone going by train to Euston on the day you can catch the Uxbridge branch of the metropolitan line from Euston Square (5 minutes walk from Euston Station). This should take you to Ruislip.

If anyone is interested I bought my rail tickets from

https://www.londonnorthwesternrailway.co.uk/

The other option for getting to Wealdstone's ground from central London on Saturday is a train from Marylebone. There's one to Harrow-on-the-Hill, where you can then pick up the Metropolitan line to Ruislip Manor/Ruislip, and another to West Ruislip, which is a short-ish walk to the ground.

Altrincham FC First Team / Re: FC Halifax Town match
« on: August 25, 2021, 12:03:50 AM »
I feel one small factor that could give us the edge is whilst we have a day off and presumably a full training session on Saturday afternoon, Halifax will have to take the 8 hour round trip down to Woking. Small margins important it what I think will be a fairly even game.

I think this could be a big advantage. We lost at Halifax last season after a 48 hour turnaround and got pumped at Solihull under similar circumstances. For a part-time team, it’s exactly when you’d want one of our ‘Macc’ games to fall.

If we're going for a completely different side for the Bradford game, as has been intimated, it's going to to be very much a weaker team with only TT, centre backs and Hanks anchoring fringe players, reserves and trialists.

Plus Kirby, Jackson, Kosylo and Peers.

‘I think everyone is aware that Connor and Andy are not going to be fit for the start of the season, so that is an area of concern at the moment,' said assistant-manager Neil Sorvel.

I was not aware of this at all. Did I miss something?

It wasn't a case of the fans criticising him at all. It seemed as if he fell completely out of favour with the manager after a certain point and, if that was the case, you'd guess he'd have been released if he wasn't already under contract for this season.

Did he have injury problems last season? I don't remember hearing that.

21 players including 5 central defenders. I'm guessing Hall will go out on loan again, but I do wonder if Mullarkey could be our secret midfield dynamo. We've not kept Sutton on for nothing.

We may not have wanted to keep Sutton but he's under contract so...

According to the NLP, Neil Sorvel said “Lads have got to quit jobs........and a number of them are of an age where they aren’t going to do that...we’d have ended up with a half and half split, which isn’t ideal”

Am I missing something here? I thought that would be a typical hybrid model we would be working towards in the first year.

If that’s a stumbling block shouldn’t the players have been consulted before all this was announced? Very cavalier and very poor show from the management and/or board.

I guess 'hybrid' could refer either to some of the players being full-time and some part-time or to all of the players training more than just Tuesday and Thursday nights but not as much as a full-time squad would. I assume we were hoping to move the whole squad to a fuller training schedule but their working lives won't allow it.

i'd take with a massive pinch of salt anything written in the NLP. can someone link me to the announcement that were going hybrid this season?

It was discussed quite a bit in John and Brian’s interview with Phil, Neil and Bill when the new contracts for the management team were announced:
